[de] Der Beitrag setzt sich mit der in der Grenzforschung etablierten Rede von bordering auseinander und argumentiert, dass diese häufig von einer unzureichenden Explizitmachung der jeweils zugrunde liegenden prozessualen Grenzverständnisse geprägt ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird eine Heuristik vorgeschlagen, die zwei idealtypische Zugänge zu Bordering-Prozessen unterscheidet: eine nach Außen gerichtete bordering inspection, die Effekte vorausgesetzter Grenzen untersucht, und eine nach Innen gerichtete bordering introspection, die die Grenze selbst als Ergebnis von sozialen und kulturellen Un/Ordnungsleistungen rekonstruiert. Die Unterscheidung zielt darauf, verschiedene Erkenntnisinteressen, Untersuchungsgegenstände und methodologische Zugänge der Grenzforschung präziser zu verorten und zueinander in Beziehung zu setzen. Anhand von Beispielen wird gezeigt, wie beide Perspektiven einander ergänzen können. Der Beitrag versteht die Pluralität von bordering nicht als konzeptuelles Defizit, sondern als epistemische Chance, deren Nutzung jedoch eine begriffliche Explizitmachung voraussetzt.
[fr] Ce texte interroge l’usage établi de la notion de bordering dans les études sur les frontières et soutient que celui-ci est fréquemment marqué par une explicitation insuffisante des conceptions processuelles de la frontière qui le sous-tendent. Dans cette perspective, il propose une heuristique distinguant deux approches idéal-typiques des processus de bordering : une bordering inspection orientée vers l’extérieur, qui analyse les effets de frontières présupposées, et une bordering introspection orientée vers l’intérieur, qui reconstruit la frontière elle-même comme le produit de processus sociaux et culturels de dis/ordering. Cette distinction cherche à situer plus précisément les intérêts de recherche, objets d’analyse et les approches méthodologiques au sein des études sur les frontières, ainsi qu’à les mettre en relation. À partir d’exemples, le texte montre comment ces deux perspectives peuvent se compléter de manière productive. Il conçoit la pluralité du bordering non comme un déficit conceptuel, mais comme une opportunité épistémique, dont l’exploitation suppose toutefois une explicitation des conceptions processuelles de la frontière.
[en] This paper engages with the established use of the concept of bordering in Border Studies and argues that it is often characterised by an insufficient explicit articulation of the underlying processual understandings of borders. Against this background, the paper proposes a heuristic that distinguishes between two ideal-typical approaches to bordering processes: an outward-oriented bordering inspection, which examines the effects of presupposed borders, and an inward-oriented bordering introspection, which reconstructs the border itself as the fabric of social and cultural processes of dis/ordering. This distinction seeks to more precisely situate different epistemic interests, objects of inquiry and methodological approaches within Border Studies and to relate them to one another. Drawing on examples, the paper demonstrates how both perspectives can be combined productively. It conceptualises the plurality of bordering not as a deficit but as an epistemic opportunity, the use of which, however, requires an explicit articulation of the underlying processual understandings of borders.
