[en] In this short essay I will discuss two books that theorise the local as part of efforts to understand language in/and globalisation. These are: English as a Local Language by Christina Higgins (Multilingual Matters, 2009) and Language as a Local Practice by Alastair Pennycook (Routledge, 2010). Following a brief review of these books in relation to the local in the sociolinguistics of globalisation, I will illustrate some of their key ideas in relation to my own encounters with English during a recent visit to China’s capital, Beijing.
