Abstract :
[en] The population census is an essential tool: currently, it is the only source of data that makes it possible to study in detail the characteristics of dwellings and their occupants. The 2021 census reveals both continuities and changes in the housing stock and occupants in Luxembourg. The country’s households continue to live mainly in large dwellings (54.4% of dwellings have a surface area of more than 120m2), with a large pro-portion of houses (45.9%) and households (27%) hav-ing more than 80m2 per occupant in their dwelling. In addition, the division of space between urban areas and less densely populated areas remains: the maps in this publication show that urban areas have dwell-ings with higher rents, are more densely occupied and experience higher occupant turnover. Nevertheless, there have been some significant changes, in particu-lar the rapid reduction in the proportion of houses in the housing stock, and in the proportion of dwellings using heating oil as their fuel (27.8% in 2021, compared with 37.8% in 2011). For the first time, the 2021 census also asked households about their home’s renovation needs, and homeowners about the renovation work they had carried out (29.2% had carried out energy-re-lated work). This new information shows that the oc-cupants of these dwellings believe that a significant proportion of the stock is in need of renovation (24.0%).
