[en] Despite the increased discourse on the complexity of borders, there are hardly any references in the academic debate as to what exactly complex borders mean or complexity-oriented border research. This paper starts here and discusses the promising relationship between complexity thinking and border research. To this end, it explains what is currently qualified as complex in border research and what understanding of complexity can be found there. The core ideas of complexity thinking are then presented and linked to the ordering and ordered principle of the border. Building on this, border research approaches and methodologies are identified that can be considered enablers of the complexity perspective and, thus, as starting points for complexity-oriented border research. [fr] Malgré l'intérêt accru pour la complexité des frontières, on ne trouve guère de références dans le débat scientifique sur ce que l'on entend exactement par frontières complexes ou une recherche sur les frontières orientée à la complexité. L'article aborde ce point et discute la relation prometteuse entre la pensée complexe et la recherche sur les frontières. Pour ce faire, nous exposerons ce qui est actuellement qualifié comme complexe dans la recherche sur les frontières et quelle notion de la complexité on y trouve. Ensuite, les grandes lignes de la pensée complexe sont présentées et mises en relation avec le principe ordonnateur et ordonné de la frontière. Sur cette base, nous identifions les approches et les méthodologies de la recherche sur les frontières qui peuvent être considérées comme des précurseurs de la perspective orienté à la complexité et donc comme des points de départ d’une recherche sur les frontières orientée à la complexité. [de] Trotz der verstärkten Beschäftigung mit der Komplexität von Grenzen finden sich in der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion kaum Hinweise darauf, was genau mit komplexen Grenzen oder komplexitätsorientierter Grenzforschung gemeint ist. Der Beitrag setzt hier an und diskutiert das vielversprechende Verhältnis von Komplexitätsdenken und Grenzforschung. Dafür wird dargelegt, was in der Grenzforschung aktuell als komplex qualifiziert wird und welches Komplexitätsverständnis dort vorzufinden ist. Anschließend werden Grundzüge des Komplexitätsdenkens vorgestellt und mit dem ordnenden und geordneten Prinzip der Grenze verknüpft. Darauf aufbauend werden Ansätze und Methodologien der Grenzforschung identifiziert, die als Wegbereiter der Komplexitätsperspektive und damit als Ausgangspunkte einer komplexitätsorientierten Grenzforschung gelten können.
