[en] “Intercultural competence” has become a sufficiently established phrase to justify the publication of a handbook (Deardorff, 2009). “Intercultural” as a term in language teaching emerged in the 1980s as a development of the concept of “communicative competence,” which was by then widely agreed to be the aim of foreign-language teaching and learning (Byram, 1997, p. 3).
