This article investigates the regional extermination of wolves in Luxembourg during a long 19th century. It identifies successive waves of low and high intensity of hunting efforts, which can be linked to changes in political regime. One finding is that Luxembourg and its wider surroundings belonged to a part of Europe that witnessed a relative late eradication of its autochthonous wolf population. Reasons for that development are investigated in a transnational context. Due to the small size of the country, its wolf population was impacted by military events and hunting strategies beyond the border. Finally, the presentation is supported by a mapping of the killings in the context of five specific historical circumstances, based on archival data, providing a ‘geography of eradication’.
