Abstract :
[de] The Echternach Spring Procession, held annually on Whit Tuesday in Echternach, represents a unique synthesis of Christian devotion, musical continuity, and collective memory. Rooted in the cult of Willibrord, the ritual originated as a healing pilgrimage associated with nervous disorders and penitential practice. Medieval sources already mention rhythmic jumping in his honour. Over centuries, the procession incorporated diverse instrumental traditions and evolving melodies shaped by oral transmission. Consolidated in the early twentieth century, the current tune reflects Central European folk idioms. Today, the procession symbolizes both religious heritage and national cultural identity.
