Abstract :

Les Rencontres Européennes de Luxembourg" (RELUX) is a non-profit association founded in 1997 with the aim of fostering open, multidisciplinary dialogue at the European level and promoting the development of ethical, social, and political debates on the future of our societies and the challenges facing a united Europe.
Since its inception, RELUX has organized an annual event bearing the same name, offering a broad audience the opportunity to engage with researchers, experts, and practitioners from diverse disciplines and to discuss topics of general interest. These have included: economic and social cohesion in times of crisis, the evolution of justice and the rule of law, European defense, the role of media in society, and how citizens respond to environmental challenges and climate change.
Europe Direct at the University of Luxembourg (ED-UNILU) was among the partners of the 2025 edition of the “Rencontres Européennes” (RELUX 2025), which will take place from March 21 to April 4, 2025, at the Athénée de Luxembourg under the theme: “Cultivating Critical Thinking to Strengthen Democracy.” Participants in RELUX 2025 will be invited to reflect on and debate key questions related to education and training—including civic education—in the digital age. These include:
* How can we foster critical thinking in young people (and adults alike)?
* What tools and mechanisms can help them grasp the major issues of the 21st century?
* How can we ensure freedom of thought and decision-making in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence?
* What are the roles of schools and universities in this new landscape?
* What responsibilities do the EU, its Member States, and citizens bear in defending democratic principles and values?
Commentary :
At RELUX 2025, two interactive workshops aimed at raising awareness among students and teachers of the Athénée about the challenges of critically assessing and analyzing historical sources in the digital age were prepared and led by the University of Luxembourg in collaboration with the Historical Archives of the European Parliament. They took place on Monday, March 24, and Monday, March 31.
On Monday, March 24, the first workshop focused on the life and political career of Robert Schuman, as well as his declaration of May 9, 1950, which was considered the founding act of European integration.
The interactive workshops were conducted by:
* Dr Étienne Deschamps, historian at the Historical Archives of the European Parliament
* Dr Elena Danescu, Research Scientist at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH), Coordinator of Europe Direct at the University of Luxembourg
* Mr François Klein, Research (and Development) Specialist at the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History, University of Luxembourg (C²DH)
The participating teachers were Ms. Rachèle Raus, head teacher of class 2eR and Head of the History Department at the Athénée, as well as Mr. Paul Feltes, history teacher at the Athénée. Ms. Mona Guirsch, attached to the management of the Athénée du Luxembourg, was also present. Mr. Raymond Becker and Mr. Pierre Mahé represented the association Rencontres européennes. The history of the European Parliament and the European elections was the central theme of the second workshop, held on Monday, March 31.
