Abstract :
[en] This chapter directly addresses a consequential research gap in Refugee Entrepreneurship (RE) studies by acknowledging that refugee entrepreneurs are shaped by, and simultaneously shape, their host countries, entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs), and social environments. Recent literature reviews have critiqued RE research for being largely descriptive, lacking in longitudinal studies, and for being theoretically underdeveloped (Abebe, 2023; Heilbrunn & Iannone, 2020; Newman et al., 2023). It is thus our position that purposefully shifting from unidirectional research strategies to multidirectional approaches will cast an increased critical outlook onto empirical work, allowing for a more precise understanding of RE processes. In the next section, we outline the development of RE research and EEs, illustrating that at their foundation, there is a consensus surrounding the fact that refugee enterprises evolve through relational dynamics. Then, we elaborate further on two enveloping features that are intrinsic to these dynamics: (1) a wider neoliberal ideological context and (2) experiences of legitimacy, examined through the lens of epistemic injustice. These precede our conceptual model as they emphasise the main premise for multidirectional research, which we argue is to uncover the simultaneous tensions and transformations that take place through the dynamic processes of refugee entrepreneurs. After that, our conceptual model is presented and discussed including (1) the research loci, followed by (2) considerations of the multileveled, interconnected domains – individual (micro), social (meso), and cultural (macro). That section ends with (3) a summary of analytical tools that can be applied in future empirical work. This leads to a practical research agenda for future studies.
