Abstract :
[en] The present commentary focusses on selected themes described by Pina Boggi Cavallo and Michele Cesaro with regard to development in older age and it is outlined how certain concepts and principles that have become essential parts of developmental science today were anticipated and discussed by the authors already 40 years ago. Boggi Cavallo and Cesaro’s work is connected to theories and concepts of lifespan development – such as activity and disengagement, continuity theory, aging stereotypes, third and fourth age, active aging, aging well, self-regulatory processes, socioemotional selectivity, and changes in intergenerational relations. It will be shown how on the one hand each developmental theory is embedded in a specific historical and sociocultural context but also how many of the observations can be transferred into today’s contexts, describing typical phenomena that occur when people age.
