This is a critical review of a French translation of a book initially published in German under the title Vom Frankenreich zu den Ursprüngen der Nationalstaaten 800-1214. This is a manual primarilly intended for University students and providing a comparative history of what would become France et Germany, in the early Middle Ages, from the reign of Charlemagne to the battle of Bouvines which saw the victory of the French king, Philippe Augustus against a coalition led by the German emperor Otto IV.
