Since centuries, coal is one of the most important energy-sources of the world. The successive phase-out of coal mining in Western Europe implies not, that coal also loses their important role as energy-supplier. Local coal is just substituted by cheaper imported coal. Similarly, although three decades later, development in Eastern Europe occurs. In global scale, in the past years coal was the fastest growing energy source. The reserves of coal exceed those of other conventional energy sources by far. The future development of coal use depends mostly on the question if it works, to decrease the notably high, climate affecting CO2-output of the coal-fueled power generation by the development of clean-coal-technologies. In this paper we present a new vision in object oriented programming languages where the objects' attributes and operations depend on who is interacting with them. This vision is based on a new definition of the notion of role, which is inspired to the concept of affordance as developed in cognitive science. The current vision of objects considers attributes and operations as being objective and independent from the interaction. In contrast, in our model interaction with an object always passes through a role played by another object manipulating it. The advantage is that roles allow to define operations whose behavior changes depending on the role and the requirements it imposes, and to define session aware interaction, where the role maintains the state of the interaction with an object. Finally, we discuss how roles as affordances can be introduced in Java, building on our language powerJava. [less ▲]

We propose a Bayesian approach to identify protein complexes and their constituents from high-throughput protein-protein interaction screens. An infinite latent feature model that allows for multi-complex membership by individual proteins is coupled with a graph diffusion kernel that evaluates the likelihood of two proteins belonging to the same complex. Gibbs sampling is then used to infer a catalog of protein complexes from the interaction screen data. An advantage of this model is that it places no prior constraints on the number of complexes and automatically infers the number of significant complexes from the data. Validation results using affinity purification/mass spectrometry experimental data from yeast RNA-processing complexes indicate that our method is capable of partitioning the data in a biologically meaningful way. To construct and validate a scale of Professional Attitudes for both General Practitioners (in french, Attitudes Professionnelles des Médecins Generalistes) and dispensing chemists (Attitudes Professionnelles des Pharmaciens d’Officine). Methods: Stage 1. The construction and qualitative validation of a scale. By interviewing 40 patients in a preventive-care center in east of France in addition to 21 general practitioners and 22 dispensing chemists, we targeted items which could possibly help us formalize a theoretical construction of professional attitudes which intervened in the instauration and follow-up of patient treatments. Then, with the help of a group of experts, we determined which generic items in the questionnaire could be validated and, finally, identified the functions which fulfilled these attitudes. Stage 2. We statistically validated the APMG and APPO scales and then studied the classic metric characteristics of the scales by using a questionnaire which was auto-administered to 393 patients from East of France. We have completed this validation with a differential item functioning analysis to determine if the questions have similar properties among men and women. Results: 15 relational items in general practitioners and 9 in dispensing chemists were identified. They are associated with information, communication and education. Each scale is one-dimensional. Analysis showed high internal coherence (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.91 and 0.87 respectively) and acceptable reproducibility (intra-class correlation coefficients were respectively 0.74 and 0.72). Differential item functioning analysis for gender is in progress. Conclusion: The professional attitudes, we isolated represent important criteria in the quality of interpersonal doctor-patient and chemist-patient relationships. The metric characteristics of the two scales were deemed satisfactory. This suggests that they can be used as an aid in training in the healthcare professional-patient relationship, in decision-making and in assessing relational competencies. [less ▲]

The generation of precise respiratory rhythms is vital for birds, which must generate specific pressure patterns to perform several activities, song being one of the most demanding ones. These rhythms emerge as the interaction between a peripheral system and a set of neural nuclei which control the action of expiratory and inspiratory muscles. A computational model was proposed recently to account for this interaction. In this work, we describe the set of solutions that this model can display as its parameters are varied, and compare experimental records of air sac pressure patterns with the predictions of the model. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. In this paper we introduce a new view on roles in Object Oriented programming languages, based on an ontological analysis of roles. A role is always associated with an object instance playing the role and also to an object instance (its institution) which represents its context. The definition of a role depends on the definition of the institution. This property allows to endow role-players with powers that can modify the state of the institution and of the other roles defined in it. As an example, we introduce a role construct in Java, where the abolve features are interpreted as follows. Roles are implemented as classes, which can be instantiated only in presence of an instance of the player and of an instance of an institution. The definition of a class implementing a role is included in the class of the institution, the role belongs to. Powers are methods which can access private fields and methods of the institution they belong to, and of the other roles of the same institution [less ▲]

Discussion. In this paper we consider the extension of non-monotonic preference logic with the distinction between controllable(or endogenous) and uncontrollable(or exogenous)variables, which can be used for example in agent decision making and deliberation. We assume that the agent is optimistic about its owncontrollables and pessimistic about its uncontrollables, and we study ways to merge these two distinct dimensions. We also consider complex preferences, such as optimistic preferences conditional on an uncontrollable, or optimistic preferences conditional on a pessimistic preference. We have fabricated and characterized photomixers based on high energy nitrogen-ion-implanted GaAs. For material optimization and annealing dynamics in MSM photodetector structures, we used 400 keV implantation energy with an ion dose of 1´1016 cm-2. For photomixer structures we used 3 MeV energy to implant N+ ions into GaAs substrates, with an ion concentration dose of 3´1012 cm-2. The N+-implanted GaAs photomixers exhibit improved output power in comparison to their counterparts, photomixers fabricated on low-temperature-grown GaAs. The highest output power was 2.6 μW at 850 GHz and about 1 μW at 1 THz. No saturation of the output power with increased bias voltage and optical input power was observed. These characteristics make N+-implanted GaAs the material of choice for efficient high power sources of terahertz radiation. [less ▲]

Starting out from our well established process for AlGaN/GaN HFETs we discuss ways to enrich the process in order to fabricate Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor HFETs (MOSHFETs) with a Gadolinium Scandate (GdScO3) insulation layer. In particular, adequate processing orders, various etching procedures and possible drawbacks of the GdScO3 deposition process on ohmic contacts are discussed. Making use of the gained knowledge we fabricated GdScO3-MOSHFETs for the first time. Compared to a conventional HFET the new device shows a higher saturation drain current and a lower gate leakage current. In the last years mixed structures in steel and concrete gain more and more importance. These structures combine the advantages of steel constructions with the advantages of the concrete. The typical slab construction for those buildings insists in a concrete slab, which is carried by a steel beam. Both elements together result in the composite beam. The composite beam is connected to the column with the composite connection. The presented analysing model is valid for fixed, pinned and even for semi-rigid composite connections. It is related to the model by the study group COST C1. The Model helps to determine computational values for the stiffness, the load-carrying capacities and the rotation ability of composite joints. The model is based on the evaluation of 56 experiments at composite connections. [less ▲]

In this paper we describe our experience using Coordinated Atomic Actions (CAAs) to design a control system for a medical treatment, which has high reliability requirements. The “Fault-Tolerant Insulin Pump Therapy” is based on the Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Injection technique involving different sensors and actuators in order to enable continued execution of the treatment, as well as detect faults in it. Precisely that is the challenge raised by this example, to design a control system that maintains the delivery of insulin even in the presence of a large number and variety of hardware and software failures. The implementation of this control system has been made in Java using an extension of the DRIP framework, that ensures the reliability properties of systems designed using CAAs. [less ▲]

Electron emission from surfaces due to interaction with charged particles and electromagnetic fields is a topic of research for over 100 years. In the past decade new developments in the production of ultrashort laser pulses (tau < 10 fs at a wavelength of lambda approximate to 750 nm) and of slow highly charged ions (HCI) have rendered these interactions to be remarkably similar. The description of electron emission in HO-surface interactions can therefore be transcribed to model and understand photoemission from surfaces interacting with ultrashort laser pulses. Examples will be presented for two model systems. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

present calculations for the optical absorption spectra of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and BN nanotubes, using many-body perturbation theory. Solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for hBN leads to optical absorption and loss spectra where the positions and shapes of the peaks are strongly dominated by excitonic effects. The binding energy of the first exciton is about 0.71 eV. Comparison of the calculations with recently measured optical absorption and EELS demonstrates that DFT underestimates the "true" band gap of BN by 2.25 eV. This band gap difference can be partially (hot not completely) reproduced by a calculation of the quasi-particle band-structure on the level of the GW-approximation. We show, how the lower dimensionality of BN nanotubes leads to a much stronger excitonic binding energy and at the same time to a larger quasi-particle gap. This leaves the position of the first absorption peak almost unchanged. However, the difference in the series of excitonic peaks allows the spectroscopic distinction between BN nanotubes and bulk BN. We report on fabrication and high-frequency performance of our photodetectors and photomixers based on freestanding low-temperature-grown GaAs (LT-GaAs). In our experiments, the LT-GaAs/AlAs bilayers were grown on 2-inch diameter, semi-insulating GaAs wafers by a molecular beam epitaxy. Next, the bilayer was patterned to form 10 × 10 μm2 to 150 × 150 μm2 structures using photolithography and ion beam etching. The AlAs layer was then selectively etched in diluted HF solution, and the LT-GaAs device was lifted from its substrate and transferred on top of a variety of substrates including Si, MgO/YBaCuO, Al2O3, and a plastic foil. Following the transfer, metallic coplanar transmission lines were fabricated on top of the LT-GaAs structure, forming a metal semiconductor-metal photodetectors or photomixer structures. Our freestanding devices exhibited above 200 V breakdown voltages and dark currents at 100 V below 3×10-7 A. Device photoresponse was measured using an electro-optic sampling technique with 100-fs-wide laser pulses at wavelengths of 810 nm and 405 nm as the excitation source. For 810-nm excitation, we measured 0.55 ps-wide electrical transients with voltage amplitudes of up to 1.3 V. The signal amplitude was a linear function of the applied voltage bias, as well as a linear function of the laser excitation power, below well-defined saturation thresholds. Output power from the freestanding photomixers was measured with two beam laser illumination experimental setup. Reported fabrication technique is suitable for the LT-GaAs integration with a range of semiconducting, superconducting, and organic materials for high-frequency hybrid optoelectronic applications. We present a simulation of the neutralization of highly charged ions in front of a lithium fluoride surface including the close-collision regime above the surface. The present approach employs a Monte-Carlo solution of the Liouville master equation for the joint probability density of the ionic motion and the electronic population of the projectile and the target surface. It includes single as well as double particle-hole (de)excitation processes and incorporates electron correlation effects through the conditional dynamics of population strings. For slow projectiles and normal incidence, the ionic motion depends sensitively on the interplay between image acceleration towards the surface and repulsion by an ensemble of positive hole charges in the surface ("trampoline effect"). For Ne10+ we find that image acceleration is dominant and no collective backscattering high above the surface takes place. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

The angular distribution of Xe6+ ions with an energy of 800 eV/q transmitted through Ni microcapillaries is studied by a classical trajectory simulation. The results for clean and contaminated by layers of insulating materials of the internal surface of capillary are presented. We show that the angular distributions can be used to identify different phases of hollow ion formation for clean metal surface. We present ab initio and self-consistent tight-binding calculations on the band structure of single wall semiconducting carbon nanotubes with high degrees (up to 25 %) of boron substitution. Besides a lowering of the Fermi energy into the valence band, a regular, periodic distribution of the p-dopants leads to the formation of a dispersive "acceptor"-like band in the band gap of the undoped tube. This comes from the superposition of acceptor levels at the boron atoms with the delocalized carbon pi-orbitals. Irregular (random) boron-doping leads to a high concentration of hybrids of acceptor and unoccupied carbon states above the Fermi edge. [less ▲]

We present a theoretical study of the optical absorption spectrum of small boron-nitride and carbon nanotubes using time-dependent density-functional theory and the random phase approximation. Both for C and BN tubes, the absorption of light polarized perpendicular to the tube-axis is strongly suppressed due to local field effects. Since BN-tubes are wide band-gap insulators, they only absorb in the ultra-violet energy regime, independently of chirality and diameter. In comparison with the spectra of the single C and BN-sheets, the tubes display additional fine-structure which stems from the (quasi-) one-dimensionality of the tubes and sensitively depends on the chirality and tube diameter. This fine structure can provide additional information for the assignment of tube indices in high resolution optical absorption spectroscopy. [less ▲]

The power assignment problem is important for Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems to achieve high capacity. Although this problem is solved by well-known water filling algorithms, this does not provide an optimal solution if the system is constrained to a fixed raw bit error rate threshold and to discrete modulation s. In this work an approximate approach, called QoS based WF, is proposed to solve the power assignment problem with such constrains. It is shown to outperform quantization of the conventional water filling solution and a well known bit loading algorithm (Chow's algorithm) used in the Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL). [less ▲]

We present a study of the electronic structure and the optical properties of boron doped single walled carbon nanotubes which have been produced by a substitution reaction from nanotube templates. The morphology and crystal structure of the samples have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Clean boron doped SWCNT with an average boron content of 15 at% have been produced. The B1s and C1s core level spectra reveal that boron is in an sp(2) configuration and that the effective charge transfer is about 0.5 holes per boron to the C-derived states. The boron substitution also leads to new features in the optical absorption spectra which can be attributed to the appearance of an acceptor band about 0.1 eV above the top of the valence band of the SWCNT. These changes in the electronic structure and in the optical properties upon boron substitution are in good agreement with state of the art ab initio calculations. [less ▲]

Backgating effect as well as breakdown and high-current performance of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs on silicon substrates are studied. The material structure of investigated devices differ in the thickness of stressrelaxing intermediate layer sequence (~1 μm and ~2.5 μm thick). It is shown that the transistor backgating effect is reduced for the thicker sequence. Similarly, the reverse gate current is two orders of the magnitude lower and the gate-drain breakdown voltage increases substantially in devices with the thicker sequence. Increase from ~40 V to ~160 V of the HEMT blocking capability measured under electrostatic discharge-like conditions is also observed. [less ▲]

We present ab initio calculations of phonons in single-wall. boron nitride nanotubes. Raman and infrared active modes of isolated and infinitely long tubes are evaluated according to the non-symmorphic rod groups of BN nanotubes. For tubes of finite length, the selection rules are less restrictive and give rise to additional modes which may be observed in Raman and IR spectroscopy with an intensity depending on the tube length. Bundling of tubes is shown to have little effect on the phonon frequencies. However, arranging tubes in a large periodic array (larger than the wave-length of incoming light) gives rise to a strong frequency shift (LO-TO splitting) of some modes due to the establishing of a macroscopic electric field. Modes of A(1) symmetry experience a shift for laser light along the tube axis and E-1 modes are split for light incidence in the perpendicular direction. [less ▲]

Optimal maximum likelihood detection of finite alphabet symbols in general requires time consuming exhaustive search methods. The computational complexity of such techniques is exponential in the size of the problem and for large problems sub-optimal algorithms are required. In this paper, to find a solution in polynomial time, a semidefinite programming approach is taken to estimate binary symbols in a general linear system. A condition under which the proposed method provides optimal solutions is derived. As an application, the proposed algorithm is used as a decoder for a linear space-time block coding system and the results are illustrated with numerical examples. [less ▲]

Results on the preparation and properties of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs on silicon substrates are presented and selected issues related to the material structure and device performance devices are discussed. Virtually crack-free AlGaN/GaN heterostructures (xAlN ≅ 0.25), with low surface roughness (rms of 0.64 nm), ns ≅ 1×1013 cm-2 and μ ≅ 1100 cm2/V s at 300 K, were grown by LP-MOVPE on 2-inch (111)Si substrates. HEMT devices with Lg = 0.3−0.7 μm were prepared by conventional device processing steps. Photoionization spectroscopy measurements have shown that a trap level of 1.85 eV, additional to two levels of 2.9 and 3.2 eV found before on GaN-based HEMTs on sapphire, is present in the structures investigated. Self-heating effects were studied by means of temperature dependent dc measurements. The channel temperature of a HEMT on Si increases with dissipated power much slower than for similar devices on sapphire substrate (e.g. reaches 95 and 320 °C on Si and sapphire, respectively, for 6 W/mm power). Prepared AlGaN/GaN/Si HEMTs exhibit saturation currents up to 0.91 A/mm, a good pinch-off, peak extrinsic transconductances up to 150 mS/mm and static heat dissipation capability up to ~16 W/mm. Unity current gain frequencies fT up to 21 and 32 GHz were obtained on devices with gate length of 0.7 and 0.5 μm, respectively. The saturation current and fT values are comparable to those known for similar devices using sapphire and SiC substrates. Properties of AlGaN/GaN/Si HEMTs investigated show that this technology brings a prospect for commercial application of high power rf devices. [less ▲]

The goal of this paper is to replicate and extend the connectionist model presented by Mareschal and French(1997) as an account of 'the particularities of […] infant memory and categorization'. With infants, the sequential presentation of cats followed by dogs yields an expected increase in infants' looking time, whereas the reversed presentation order does not. This intriguing asymmetry of infants' category formation, first reported by Quinn, Eimas, and Rosenkrantz (1993), was simulated by Mareschal et al.'s simple connectionist network. In addition, the authors proposed that this asymmetric categorization is a natural b yproduct of the 'asymmetric overlaps of the visual feature distributions' of cats and dogs. Using a simple feed forward backpropagationnetwork, we successfully replicated this asymmetric categorization effect, as well as a reported asymmetric exclusivity effect in the two categories, and anasymmetric interference effect of learning dogs on the memory for cats, but not of learning cats on the memory for dogs. We furthermore investigated the authors'explanation of the asymmetric effects, firstly, by systematically varying the overall similarity between learned items and interfering items, and secondly, by adding a binary feature to the input set, namely the animal cry (barking vs. mewing). The results of the present modeling underscore the authors' explanation of the observed effects in infants' memory and categorization, but also suggest lines of further experimental research susceptible to undermine the proposed connectionist account.
