A new method for distributed resource allocation is called market{based control. Market{based control systems im- itate the behavior of an economic system; some applica- tions of this method exist in the eld of distributed com- puter and telecommunications systems. A new eld of application is the control of dynamic systems. In this work, the market{based approach is used for optimal con- trol which is still one of the important methods of control theory. Unfortunately, even though most researchers in this area deal with complex systems, they omit the math- ematical background. For this reason, our work focuses on a mathematical description of a market{based control algorithm especially for linear dynamic systems in order to explain the relationship between economic and control systems. It is shown that the optimal control problem can be considered as a special kind of a resource distribution problem. Therefore, the fact that in economic systems re- sources are optimally distributed in a decentralized man- ner even in large and complex systems is very interesting. The obtained algorithm in the case of a linear system is characterized by a very e ective computation and easy understanding. [less ▲]

In this short publication, I present a few facts on the security of some current Internet applications. Since one strong focus of this conference was the usage of the Internet for electronic business applications, I address two applications often used in electronic business: electronic mail (E-mail) and secure access of web pages using the SSL protocol. It should be noted that all the facts presented in the note are well-known to security experts and not new. It might however be helpful for the ordinary of electronic commerce to become more aware of some security-related problems of the Internet. [less ▲]

Personal Homepages (HPs) belong to an emerging genre. Confronted with a kind of text which is still rather undefined, whose form and content are not fixed and to which they haven't had exposure before, authors of HPs tend to take as their model other personal HPs, thus ultimately participating in the conventionalization of a genre. By examining the system of deictic elements that can be found in personal HPs, I study these emerging patterns and show rules of function and stylistic characteristics of these texts. This ultimately leads to a tentative definition of the genre of personal HPs. [less ▲]

In both the United States and the European Union the fundamental concept for the food and environmental safety assessment of products derived from modern biotechnology is the concept of substantial equivalence, where the novel product is compared to a closely related product that has an accepted standard of safety. The concept was initially introduced by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) (WHO, 1991). In 1992, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) elaborated the underlying concept and introduced the term “substantial equivalence” (OECD, 1993). The application of substantial equivalence has since been reinforced by international expert bodies (WHO, 1995; FAO, 1996) and has been adopted by regulatory authorities in most countries. [less ▲]

Comparing sequences is a very important activity both in computer science and in a many other areas as well. For example thank to text editors, everyone knows the particular instance of a sequence comparison problem knonw as ``string mathcing problem''. It consists in searching a given work eventually with errors, in a long text. Among the wide literature about sequence comparison problems this paper focuses on those problems which arestricty related with molecular biology. These problems are significant representatives of formal problems in the ``computational biology'', a discipline recently born whose aim is the formalization and the analysis of biological discrete problems. http://matrix.iei.pi.cnr.it/~lenzini/papers/pcr-cissc98.ps.gz 2018-09-18 22:51:18 +0000 2019-06-15 18:30:42 +0200 [less ▲]

This paper presents semi-global sufficient stability conditions of limit cycles for relay feedback systems. Local stability conditions exist. These are based on analyzing the linear part of the Poincare map. We know that when a certain limit cycle satisfies those local conditions, a neighborhood around the limit cycle exists such that any trajectory starting in this neighborhood converges to the limit cycle as time goes to infinity. However, tools to characterize this neighborhood do not exist. In this work, we present conditions, in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMI), that guarantee the stability of a limit cycle in a reasonably large set around it. These results differ from previous local results as they take into account the high order terms of the Poincare map. [less ▲]

Comparisons have been made between the channel currents in GaAs hESFETs prepared on GaAs buffer layers prepared at normal and low temperatures. All devices made on LT buffer layers had saturated channel currents which were about 20% of similar devices on a normal buffer. An attempt was made to remove Ga vacanciies from the LT buffer by a high temperature anneal step before the epitaxial layer was prepared. This had no effect in increasing the channel current. In all cases the pinchoiy voltage was unchanged indicating constancy of the channel thickness and donor concentration. It is concluded that the loss of current is due to a loss of mobile charge through trapping. [less ▲]

This paper reports our communication done at the 8th Benelux Workshop on Logic Programming in Louvain-la-Neuve, 9 September 1996. We present a constraint formulation in finite domains of the kernel construction on simple digraphs and give some comments on implementation in CHIP. Application to fuzzy choice procedures will illustrate the theoretical developments. [less ▲]

A very important step in the number field sieve for computing discrete logarithms in finite fields is the combination of so called relations. These combinations are used in the final linear algebra step to find the discrete logarithm. From a practical point of view, it is highly desirable to find combinations with as few as possible non zero entries, since this property speeds up the linear algebra part. In this paper we present a new algorithm for computing combinations which shows significant improvements in practice to existing other algorithms. [less ▲]
