Diagnostic competence is considered as a central aspect of teacher competence. It generally aims at specifying the needs for support and linking them with pedagogical didactical measures (Niederkofler et al. 2018; Schrader 2013). Facing the heterogeneity of learning groups, teachers’ diagnostic competences in assessing students’ characteristics and potential are becoming increasingly relevant. The ability to judge students’ prerequisites adequately is generally seen as a vital basis for an instruction adapted to students’ abilities. Up to now, diagnostic competences are considered as a core aspect of teachers’ expertise. While diagnostic competence includes measures of diagnostic accuracy, related to level, rank, and differentiation, it is not determined by a single ability. It, for instance, also embraces the judgment of requirements of learning materials as an essential element for initiating successful learning processes. The better the diagnostic competence is, the better the difficulty of tasks and materials are estimated. This is not only relevant for lesson preparation but also during a lesson while judging scenarios adequately and consequently adapting teaching and learning processes (Ohle and McElvany 2015; Schrader 2013). Such development is enhanced through informed thinking, caring, and enlightened Physical Education teaching by teachers who are operating within an ethical framework of good practice. Children and young people, as well as their families, should have every confidence that when in school Physical Education teachers treat learners with respect and understanding. Thus, it is of primordial importance that Physical Education teachers promote good practice and procedures by complying to values-related principles while being ever vigilant and aware of their responsibilities toward the children and young people in their care. In this entry, we explore ethical practice in Physical Education from the perspective of ethical teaching and the role the subject can play in contribution to the development of ethical awareness in children and young people. This chapter focuses on the place of the public prosecutor in common law and civil law jurisdictions. It first describes the institutional positioning of public prosecutors, particularly vis-à-vis the executive power, before discussing their role and powers in regard to the pretrial phase. It then considers the increasing tendency to entrust the public prosecutor with quasi-judicial sanctioning powers in the context of out-of-court procedures (“prosecutorial adjudication”). It also examines the role of specialized law enforcement authorities in the exercise of investigative and prosecutorial functions, coercive measures and the need for judicial authorization, and prosecutorial discretion and alternatives to trial proceedings. Finally, it explains how independence, centralization and decentralization, legality and opportunity of prosecution, and the alternatives to trial proceedings have been translated to the supranational design of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). The establishment of international offshore, satellite or branch campuses in the Persian or Arabian Gulf region emphasizes the dynamism of higher education development. With a history of several decades, Qatar’s higher education and science policies join contrasting strategies prevalent in capacity building attempts worldwide – to emulate the strongest global exemplars through importation as well as to cultivate local, indigenous assets. Luxembourg, among the world’s smallest but also wealthiest countries, lies in the heart of Western Europe. Bordered by Belgium, France, and Germany and historically known for its strategic position as the “Gibraltar of the North,” Luxembourg is today one of the European Union’s three capital cities. Luxembourg sits at the crossroads between Europe’s Germanic and Francophone language communities. The Grand Duchy’s inhabitants and their many languages – the national language Luxemburgish as well as German and French as languages of administration and of everyday living – reflect the country’s close historical relations with its neighbors and remarkable migratory flows that have resulted in an ethnically hyper-diverse and multilingual population. Reflecting this cultural diversity, the educational system emphasizes language learning, with Luxemburgish learned in preschool; German the focus throughout primary schooling and in secondary technical-vocational education; and French emphasized in secondary academic-oriented schooling. Compulsory schooling age lasts from 4 to 16. The educational system provides a range of primary and secondary schools, mainly run by government but with some maintained by religious bodies. Home schooling is possible, but rare. At the tertiary level, the national flagship University of Luxembourg (UL), building upon the legacies of several postsecondary training institutes, was founded in 2003 according to three principles: internationality, multilingualism, and interdisciplinarity. Beyond this research university, more applied postsecondary organizations offer a range of courses of study. In diesem Beitrag werden Alltagspraktiken untersucht, die von den Einwohnern des Saarlandes, Lothringens, Luxemburgs, von Rheinland-Pfalz und Wallonien in angrenzenden Regionen im Ausland ausgeführt werden. Dafür leitend ist die Überlegung, dass sich die Großregion SaarLorLux anhand der grenzüberschreitenden Ausführungen von Alltagspraktiken ihrer Bewohner als grenzüberschreitende Lebenswirklichkeit bestimmen lässt. In einer solchen sozialkonstruktivistischen Perspektive wird nicht danach gefragt, was die Großregion SaarLorLux ist, sondern auf welche Weisen sie konstituiert wird bzw. wie sie sich im Alltag ihrer Bewohner manifestiert. Dafür werden die am häufigsten grenzüberschreitend ausgeführten Alltagspraktiken näher betrachtet, zu denen das Einkaufen für den täglichen Bedarf, das freizeitorientierte Shoppen, das Erholen im Grünen/Tourismus, das Besuchen von kulturellen Veranstaltungen sowie das Besuchen von Freunden und Familienmitgliedern zählen. Die Betrachtungen basieren auf drei rezenten empirischen Studien im Untersuchungsraum und daraus ausgewählten Befunden, die zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt sowie soziokulturell und sozioökonomisch eingeordnet werden mit dem Ziel, die räumliche Organisation, die Motive und andere Kontextfaktoren von grenzüberschreitenden Alltagspraktiken in der Großregion SaarLorLux herauszuarbeiten. Über dieses Vorgehen werden Mobilitätsströme und räumliche Schwerpunkte im Kontext von Alltagspraktiken rekonstruiert und Einblicke gegeben in die Beschaffenheit von grenzüberschreitenden Lebenswirklichkeiten in der Großregion SaarLorLux. Literacy and multilingualism in Africa is approached here as a field of practice rather than a unified field of research. This field presents a crucial paradox: African contexts present some of the world’s most diverse and vital multilingual situations but also feature in the world’s poorest literacy rates and are routinely said to lack a literate tradition altogether. By reviewing Africa’s script inventions this chapter offers counter-evidence for this deceptive view. Throughout Africa – from the Maghreb over West and Central Africa to the Horn of Africa – there have been significant indigenous script traditions and inventions, including Tifinagh, N’ko, Vai, Bamum and Ge’ez. In fact, some of the world’s oldest known scripts (e.g. Egyptian hieroglyphs) are African scripts. The chapter further outlines two relatively young fields of practice and research that have begun to make major contributions to literacy and multilingualism in Africa: digital literacy and linguistic landscape. These fields share a common interest in the materiality of real language as opposed to idealized images of language and in local agency and creativity in the site of struggle that is language. Like digital language practices, linguistic landscapes constitute a domain for African written multilingualism that is not generally supported or monitored by African states. Nor does either field present simple continuities from colonially inherited language policies and ideologies, in the way that classrooms do. As spaces for writing par excellence linguistic landscapes and mobile phones promise to contribute in no minor way to the development of African language literacies and multilingualism in Africa.
