[more ▼] Our research report employs the D4R data and combines it with several
other sources to study one of the multiple aspects of integration of refugees, namely
the mobility of refugees across provinces in Turkey. In particular, we employ a
standard gravity model to empirically estimate a series of determinants of refugee
movements. These include the standard determinants such as province characteristics,
distances across provinces, levels of income, network effects as well as some
refugee-specific determinants such as the presence of refugee camps and the intensity
of phone call interaction among refugees. Importantly, we explore the effect
of certain categories of news events, notably protests, violence, and asylum grants.
Considering news as an indicator of policy implemented at the provincial level, we
gain a better understanding as to how policy can facilitate refugee mobility and thus
enhance integration. To benchmark our findings, we estimate the same model for the
mobility of individuals with a non-refugee status. [more ▼] Chronic diseases can be considered as perturbations of complex adaptive systems. Transitions from healthy states to chronic diseases are often characterized by sudden and unexpected onset of diseases. These critical transitions or catastrophic shifts have been studied in theoretical and applied physics, ecology, social science, economics and recently also in biomedical applications. If we could understand the underlying mechanisms and the dynamics of critical transitions involved in the development of diseases, we would be better equipped to predict and eventually prevent them from arising. The current paper gives an overview of the potential application of the concept of critical transitions to biomedical applications. [more ▼] This chapter examines the role the British policy in Greece played in the shift in American foreign policy that was manifested in 1947-48, that led directly to these alliances, namely the Western European Union and NATO. To achieve this shift (which also included support of British strategic interests in the Eastern Mediterranean) this chapter argues that the British used Greece, first as a way to draw the United States further into European affairs, and then as a way to anchor the United States in Europe, achieving a guarantee of security for the Eastern Mediterranean and for Western Europe. Drawing on both published and unpublished British and American sources, this chapter will also examine perceptions of the conflicts in and about Greece, and what it represented for Western European and Eastern Mediterranean security, and Western ideas of democracy when confronted with supporting a right-wing Greek government. In so doing, it clarifies how American foreign policy changed from its pre-war focus on non-intervention, to the cold-war politics of containment and intervention. [more ▼] Fictitious domain/immersed boundary method (FD/IBM) has recently been used for particulate flows and complex fluid-solid interaction problems. The advantage of FD/IBM over the body- fitted method is that it substantially simplifies grid generation for immersed geometries, and it is easier to handle moving boundary situations. FD/IBM even allows the use of a stationary and non- deformation background mesh, as well as it reduces the cost of computation by avoiding generation of a body-fitted mesh for each time step. In this work, we develop a new platform to directly simulate super-quadric (SQ) particles in fluid based on a forcing fictitious domain method. Specifically, a super-quadric particle function is used to represent particle with varying shapes and sizes as encountered for concrete and mortar. The immersion of particles in fluid is handled by imposing a rigidity solid body motion in the particle domain, as well as adding a forcing term to the Navier-stokes equation by integral of pressure gradient and particle related velocity over the whole particle domain. Particle shapes are given by changing the super-quadric parameters of SQ equation. Particle motions, which occur during pumping of cementitious material, can be calculated and tracked by solving Newton’s equations of motions using the extended discrete element method (XDEM)[4] while the data of fluid flow properties are obtained by solving the Navier-Stokes equations which govern the fluid phase. Hence, a particle interface resolving solver is developed by coupling XDEM and IBM. We validate our solver by performing flow around particles and free falling of a particle in the channel at different parameters in 2D and 3D. The final objective of this work is to develop a particle-resolved direct numerical simulation platform to predict highly packed fluids with different shapes of particles and over a wide range of particle sizes. We use a recursive algorithm to estimate the nonparametric specification. In a Monte Carlo experiment, we analyse its forecasting performance and compare it with a correctly and a mis-specified parametric estimator. On a real dataset, the nonparametric estimator seems to mildly overperform in terms of predictive power. The nonparametric analysis can also provide guidance on the choice between alternative parametric specifications. In particular, once intraday seasonality is directly modelled in the conditional duration function, the nonparametric approach provides insights into the time-varying nature of the dynamics in the model that the standard procedures of deseasonalization may lead one to overlook. But many other components could be grouped from a perspective of community music. First, it seems that it is totally dissociated from traditional methods of musical learning of a formal or non-formal nature. However, it would preferably be linked to informal education. Music in the community is presented as a counter-phenomenon to the highly professionalised musical culture (Lichtinger, 2013). The term ‘community music’ is perfectly appropriate to trace the process of a musical education of young people that often begins with an amateur phase to lead later to the professional life for the most skilled, either to describe the musical training and life of young amateurs, or to trace the life of amateur musicians throughout the life of these musicians. I will present definitions for each of the three training aspects. Next, I will relate the two concepts – that of the three aspects of musical formation and that of music in the community – by giving examples of widespread musical practice, namely wind music (and / or choral) to finally compare models of musical learning. [more ▼] The decreasing cost of high-throughput technologies allows to consider their use in healthcare and medicine. To prepare for this upcoming revolution, the community is assembling large disease-dedicated datasets such as TCGA or METABRIC. These datasets will serve as references to compare new patient samples to in order to assign them to a predefined category (i.e. ‘patients associated with poor prognosis’). Some problems affecting the downstream analysis remain to be solved, the bottleneck is no longer data generation itself but the integration of the existing datasets with the present knowledge. Constraint-based modelling, that only requires the setting of a few parameters, became popular for the integration of high-throughput data in a metabolic context. Notably, context-specific building algorithms that extract a subnetwork from a reference network are largely used to study metabolic changes in various diseases. Reference networks are composed of canonical pathways while extracted subnetworks include only active pathways in the context of interest based on high-throughput data. Even though these algorithms can be part of automated pipelines, to be applied by clinicians, the model-building pipelines must be coupled to a standardized semi-automated analysis workflow based on machine learning approaches to avoid bias and reduce the cost of diagnostics. [more ▼] Video games have been labeled a male space, and playing video games an activity created by men and for men (Fox & Tang, 2014; see also Lange & Schwab, this volume). The present chapter analyses the typical roles of male and female video game characters, their presentation in games, their effects, and how players perceive these characters. To this end, gender in video games will be analyzed on different levels. Although women and men share the same overall interest in playing video games as a medium for entertainment, they differ substantially with regard to genres and game titles they prefer. These gender differences have been attributed to the overrepresentation of male characters in video games, uninviting game contents that strongly rely on competition and physical aggression, and the stereotypical portrayal and scripted behavioral patterns of hyper-masculine or “macho” male and sexualized female game characters. The issue of gender portrayals in video games will be discussed in the light of theoretical considerations on evolved dispositions that differ by sex versus the social structural account that attributes sex differences to the differing placement of women and men in the social structure. It will be argued that both theoretical approaches make similar predictions regarding gender-specific video game preferences. This political priority impacts also physical education (PE) as the only school subject where all students are physically active, in a sense that international recommendations on daily physical activity can at least be partly reached. Standard test signals, such as the sine wave, the square wave, and the sawtooth wave, as well as the real-data signals, such as speech, electrocardiogram and electroencephalogram are used for the numerical experiments for the 1D case, and grayscale images for the 2D case. The 1D FLP model is proposed to have a similar construction as the LP model, i.e. it uses linear combination of fractional derivatives with different values of the fractional order. The 2D FLP model uses linear combination of the fractional derivatives in two directions, horizontal and vertical. The scheme for the computation of the optimal predictor coefficients for both 1D and 2D FLP models is also provided. The performance of the proposed FLP models is compared to the performance of the LP models, confirming that the proposed FLP can be successfully applied in processing of 1D and 2D signals, giving comparable or better performance using the same or even smaller number of parameters. [more ▼] Location-based gaming (LBG) apps present many challenges to the design process. They have very different requirements compared to games that are aspatial in nature. They take place in the wild and this brings unique challenges to the practicalities of their design. There is a need to balance the core game play with the spatial requirements of location-aware technologies as well as considering the overall theme and objectives of the game together with the motivations and behaviours of players. We reflect upon this balancing act and explore an approach to creative paper prototyping through the medium of board games to co-design LBG requirements. We examine two case studies of location-based games with different goals. The first case study discusses the CrossCult Pilot 4 app built to trigger reflection on historical stories through thoughtful play. Whilst the second case study uses the City Conquerer app designed and played in Suzhou, China with a view to exploring notions of territoriality. The paper considers how spatial, social and interaction metaphors are used to simulate location-based games in a board game and discusses the lessons learned when transforming the paper game into a digital prototype. It forms part of a thinking by doing approach. By comparing the board games to the technical counterparts, we consider how effective are the features and activities implemented in the technology prototypes. We propose a set of 11 design constraints that developers must be mindful of when transitioning from paper to digital prototypes. [more ▼] The European Union does not have a harmonized – let alone centralized – tax system that offers specific tax incentives. It also does not explicitly regulate tax competition of its constituent parts (the EU Member States) with third countries, but only regulates “internal tax competition” among them, through the mechanism of the Code of Conduct and, even more strongly, by prohibiting State aid from being granted through tax measures. The question asked by the title of this chapter thus seems to be easily answerable in the negative: since the European Union does not make external tax policies for its Member States and does not itself provide specific tax incentives, it is not an agent of tax competition. Consequently, it would be challenging to argue that the European Union engages in harmful tax competition towards third countries. Taking a broader view, however, the notion that the European Union may engage in harmful tax competition may not be so easily dismissed, as it takes regulatory action that impacts Member States as primary agents of tax competition in a variety of ways, which can either improve or reduce the Member States’ and, by extension the European Union’s competitive position vis-à-vis third countries. Such impact takes three different routes: (i) primary EU law, affecting the design of domestic tax incentives; (ii) secondary EU law, determining certain kinds of tax incentives; and (iii) soft-law instruments, affecting domestic tax design. This contribution aims at analysing these three routes of tax competition of the European Union in order to get a deeper understanding of the ways in which the European Union may be said to engage in harmful tax competition. Before the different models can be analysed in this light, however, it is first necessary to enquire into the nature of “harmful tax competition”, a term that is all too often used without a clear definition of its content. Emslander, V. (2019). [more ▼] In this chapter, we investigate the performance of a time-switching (TS) based energy harvesting model for cache-assisted simultaneous wireless transmission of information and energy (Wi-TIE). In the considered system, a relay which is equipped with both caching and energy harvesting capabilities helps a source to convey information to a destination. Based on the time-splitting mechanism, we analyze the effect of caching on the system performance in terms of stored energy at the relay and the relay-destination link throughput. In particular, two optimization problems are formulated to maximize the energy stored at the relay and the relay-destination throughput. By using KKT method, closed-form solution are obtained for both the problems. Finally, the performance of the proposed design under various operating conditions and parameter values is illustrated using numerical results. [more ▼] This chapter focuses on implicit attitudes toward smoking and provides the first systematic review of research in this domain. Implicit attitudes are suggested to guide automatic behavior, thereby playing a pivotal role for automatic processes inherent in addictive behaviors. This chapter further explores the extent to which implicit attitudes are context-sensitive. More specifically, it reviews studies that have focused on the differential effects of external cues such as warning labels and internal cues (e.g., deprivation). Results of 32 studies show that although smokers generally have more positive implicit attitudes than non-smokers, the valence of implicit attitudes varies as a result of the applied method or stimuli. Studies reveal that implicit attitudes toward smoking partly depend on external cues, especially outcome expectancies. Similarly, internal cues affect implicit attitudes whereby the level of nicotine deprivation seems vital. Implications for intervention and future research are indicated in the discussion. [more ▼] Ultrascale Computing Systems (UCSs) are envisioned as large-scale complex systems joining parallel and distributed computing systems that will be two to three orders of magnitude larger than today’s systems (considering the number of Central Process Unit (CPU) cores). It is very challenging to find sustainable solutions for UCSs due to their scale and a wide range of possible applications and involved technologies. For example, we need to deal with heterogeneity and cross fertilization among HPC, large-scale distributed systems, and big data management. One of the challenges regarding sustainable UCSs is resilience. Another one, which attracted less interest in the literature but becomes more and more crucial with the expected convergence with the Cloud computing paradigm, is the notion of regulation in such system to assess the Quality of Service (QoS) and Service Level Agreement (SLA) proposed for the use of these platforms. This chapter covers both aspects through the reproduction of two articles: [1] and [2]. [more ▼] Constitutional and economic perspectives frequently differ, including with respect to taxation. Constitutional scholars, on the one hand, typically focus on questions of justice with respect to a particular policy, together with the legal and institutional structures that aim to implement that policy, and thus look at individual rights, equity, the balance ofpowers and the proportionate consideration of diverse interests. Economists, on the other hand, are mainly interested in a particular policy's economic efficiency: they zoom in on its trade-offs, incentives, and consequences for economic welfare as a whole. It is necessary to combine both views for a holistic understanding of legal regulations. From both perspectives, it is, ultimately, a policy's practical effects that drive an assessment of its economic efficiency or its fairness. Thus, any constitutional or legal analysis ought to be imbued with a certain level of economic analysis, as justice depends on the actual outcomes of a policy, including its second-order effects. This contribution attempts to inquire the consequences of such approach in three main dimensions of timing taxation: assessment of taxes, collection of taxes, and the transition between different tax rules and systems. [more ▼] Since its advent in the middle of the 2000’s, the Cloud Computing (CC) paradigm is increasingly advertised as a price-effective solution to many IT problems. This seems reasonable if we exclude the pure performance point of view as many studies highlight a non-negligible overhead induced by the virtualization layer at the heart of every Cloud middleware when subjected to an High Performance Computing (HPC) workload. When this is the case, traditional HPC and Ultrascale computing systems are required, and then comes the question of the real cost-effectiveness, especially when comparing to instances offered by the Cloud providers. In this section, and inspired by the work proposed in [1], we propose a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis of an in-house academic HPC facility of medium-size (in particular the one operated at the University of Luxembourg since 2007, or within the Grid’5000 project [2]), and compare it with the investment that would have been required to run the same platform (and the same workload) over a competitive Cloud IaaS offer. For this purpose, the development of cooperation research, its characteristic orientations as well as the fundamentals of practical theoretical thinking will be outlined. Based on this, the heuristic figure of thought of cross-border practice formation is developed, which breaks with the premises of conventional cooperation research. It will be further differentiated on the basis of four challenges of cross-border cooperation, in order to arrive at an alternative perspective on cross-border cooperation. The following is an outlook, which deals with the research-specific features of the approach presented, with a view to a future practice-sociological and multidisciplinary cooperation research. [more ▼] This paper addresses the possibility to build on the success of digital development in order to design messages that will be seen by individuals as being the most relevant to the object being addressed. By studying the social representations status as well as ergonomic features of interfaces like the information elements’ location and the color of background, we tried to determine whether persuasive technology can be a particularly effective medium to achieve favorable attitudes and behaviors towards organ donation. We recorded participants’ ocular activity and administered them a self-reported measures questionnaire. Results show several significant effects, particularly on attitudes, intentions and behaviors. We demonstrate that to increase the persuasive impact of a message, it is better to mobilize central elements of the social representations of the object being treated and to place these elements in the middle of the screen. The blue background screen did not show the expected effects. However, regarding to the interaction between social representations’ status and background’s color, it seems that white is more appropriate than blue for technological persuasion. In the end, this research contributes to propose optimization tracks for public communication though technologies, for example in fields of health, commerce, education, environment, professional efficiency or social media marketing. [more ▼] Gene expression regulation is a fundamental cellular process that enables robust functioning of cells. How different genes interact among themselves to coordinate and maintain the overall gene expression profile observed in a cell is a key question in cellular biology. However, the immense complexity arising due to the scale and the nature of gene-gene interactions often hinders obtaining a global understanding of gene regulation. In this regard, network models of gene regulation based on gene-gene interactions, commonly referred to as gene regulatory networks (GRNs), serve important purpose of describing the overall interactions within a cell and provide a systematic approach to study their global behavior. In particular, in the context of cellular differentiation and reprogramming, where regulated changes in gene expression play a crucial role, precise knowledge of a cell type-specific GRN can enable control of the eventual cell fates with potential clinical applications. In this chapter, we describe our computational methodologies that we have tailor-made with purpose of applications to cell fate control. Briefly, we introduce the process of cellular differentiation and reprogramming, describe GRNs and common strategies to model them, and, finally, introduce the concept of determinants of cellular reprogramming and differentiation. In the Methods section, we elaborate on the different steps involved in the computational pipeline, including initial gene expression data processing, characterization of prior knowledge network, algorithm to remove non-cell type-specific edges, topological characterization of the inferred network, and Boolean network simulations to mimic cellular transitions. Finally, we provide a strategy to identify determinants of cellular reprogramming and differentiation based on the proposed computational methods. [more ▼] Binge drinking (BD), an alcohol-consumption pattern characterized by frequent alternations between intense intakes and withdrawal periods, is a widespread habit in youth. It has been shown that BD is linked to impairments in psychological, cognitive, and cerebral abilities. Previous studies notably underlined that impulsivity-related mechanisms might play a pivotal role in the emergence and maintenance of BD. This chapter underlines the importance of impulsivity in BD, by proposing a literature review organized around a theoretical framework distinguishing four impulsivity subcomponents (urgency, lack of premeditation, lack of perseverance, and sensation seeking) and by identifying the (neuro-)psychological and cerebral correlates of each subcomponent. Then, the main challenges for future research are discussed, particularly underlining the need for a multidisciplinary approach to explore the links between impulsivity and other cognitive factors, the causal relationships between BD and impulsive subcomponents, and the interindividual variations of impulsive tendencies in BD.
