Filling a gap in the literature on the history of sport in Europe, the book brings together complementary studies on diverse aspects of the interrelation between sport and urban space. Going from geography to political science, from sports history to urban and transport history, it suggests a three-fold approach. A first thematic group of researches ranges around "Sport Development and Urban Spaces", exploring the impact of the city on the rise of sport. A second focal point is related to "Sport Policies and Local Identities" with a special attention given to the making of sport venues and competitions in the making of urban identity. A third thematic group includes studies on "Sport Facilities, Engineers and Workers". The articulation of the three parts builds a unique contribution to the process of identity making at a European level. [less ▲]

This unique book brings together an international roster of contributors to compare different education systems and their effects on social inequality. Starting with basic premises—such as how education systems can be characterized and what distinguishes them—the book goes on to explore those systems’ links with social structures, their role in expanding or ameliorating inequality, and the social mechanisms that underlie that role. It will be crucial to future debates on education and policy reform. [less ▲]

This book is the result of a conference held at the University of Luxembourg on 23 January 2014, which aimed to analyse the Court of Justice’s most important decisions on direct taxation and their transformative impact on direct taxation in the EU over the last three decades. Each chapter in this book is based on the authors’ presentations at the conference, in which they focused on a particular landmark decision of the Court of Justice as a starting point for the development of a specific doctrine and followed its development through decisions in later years, critically assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the Luxembourg Court’s reasoning and its path through the complex field of cross-border income taxation. Due to the nature of this project, the individual chapters’ topics, such as the Schumacker doctrine, the Marks & Spencer exception, or the impact of Cadbury Schweppes, will seem familiar to readers who are well versed in EU tax law. Yet, the depth of the analysis of each landmark case, which is explored from its historic roots and original reasoning, allows the reader to gain an unparalleled understanding of the development and minute changes in the relevant subsequent jurisprudence as the authors chart a way through the nuances of the Court’s arguments. Necessarily a snapshot of the current state of the law, it allows this book to remain relevant as the jurisprudence develops further over the years to come. [less ▲]

This book aims to enhance and challenge our understanding of language and literacy as social practice against the background of heightened globalisation. Juffermans presents an ethnographic study of the linguistic landscape of The Gambia, arguing that language should be conceptualised as a verb (languaging) rather than a countable noun (a language, languages). He goes on to argue that sociolinguistics should not be defined as the study of ‘who speaks what language to whom, and when and to what end’ (as Fishman defined it), but as the study of who uses which linguistic features under particular circumstances in a particular place and time. The book is therefore in part an exercise to unpluralise language, which Juffermans argues is necessary for a more realistic understanding of what language is, what it does, and what people do with it. The book will be of interest to sociolinguistics researchers, especially those focusing on Africa and the global South. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental structures and applications of a wide range of contemporary coding operations This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental structures and applications of a wide range of contemporary coding operations. This text focuses on the ways to structure information so that its transmission will be in the safest, quickest, and most efficient and error-free manner possible. All coding operations are covered in a single framework, with initial chapters addressing early mathematical models and algorithmic developments which led to the structure of code. After discussing the general foundations of code, chapters proceed to cover individual topics such as notions of compression, cryptography, detection, and correction codes. Both classical coding theories and the most cutting-edge models are addressed, along with helpful exercises of varying complexities to enhance comprehension. Explains how to structure coding information so that its transmission is safe, error-free, efficient, and fast Includes a pseudo-code that readers may implement in their preferential programming language Features descriptive diagrams and illustrations, and almost 150 exercises, with corrections, of varying complexity to enhance comprehension Foundations of Coding: Compression, Encryption, Error-Correction is an invaluable resource for understanding the various ways information is structured for its secure and reliable transmission in the 21st-century world. The essays in this book respond in different ways to questions regarding sovereignty, constitutionality and social solidarity in the European Union. Some of the essays perceive a threefold deficit in this regard – a constitutionality, sovereignty and solidarity deficit. The common view that can be distilled from them relates to a perception that the people and peoples of the European Union have drifted into a quagmire of political paralysis within which essential features of the paralysis – lack of constitutionality, lack of sovereignty and lack of social solidarity – feed off one another. Lack of solidarity, not only between European citizens, but also between Member States of the European Union, derails all possibilities of common political initiative, fervour and purpose. And absence of such common initiative, fervour and purpose quite evidently explains the faltering of Europe’s constitutional project and the reduction of this project to that which Jürgen Habermas has come to call Europe’s “mindless incrementalism.” Unable to arrive at the constitutionality that would allow for the emergence of European sovereignty, the faltering constitutional process has only managed to dismantle essential elements of sovereignty and social solidarity within the Member States of the European Union. This has led to the double edged lack of sovereignty (lack of sovereignty at EU level and lack of sovereignty in the Member States) that has lead Dieter Grimm to observe (also in his contribution to this book) that there may well be no true sovereign left in Europe today. Against this background, it is perhaps no surprise that a non-sovereign body would step in to take over the responsibilities of sovereign government, and do so on the basis of the only principle that appears prima facie legitimate under circumstances of political paralysis, namely, the ordo-liberal principle of reducing politics to guardianship of free competition between individuals that replaces constitutional law with competition law; hence the crucial role that the market-liberalisation jurisprudence of the European Court of Justice have come to play in the non-sovereign or surreptiously-sovereign way Europe is governed today. To be sure, not all the essays in this book share this grim view. A number of them discern an emergence of new forms of democracy or even new forms of political legitimacy in the complex structures of multi-level governance in the European Union. Between them, however, the spectrum of essays that make up this book undoubtedly provides the reader with a comprehensive study of the key issues of European politics and law today. [less ▲]

As contemporary education becomes increasingly tied to global economic power, national school systems attempting to influence one another inevitably confront significant tensions caused by differences in heritage, politics, and formal structures. Trajectories in the Development of Modern School Systems provides a comprehensive theoretical and empirical critique of the reform movements that seek to homogenize schooling around the world. Informed by historical and sociological insight into a variety of nations and eras, these in-depth case studies reveal how and why sweeping, convergent reform agendas clash with specific institutional policies, practices, and curricula. Countering current theoretical models which fail to address the potential pressures born from these challenging isomorphic developments, this book illuminates the cultural idiosyncrasies that both produce and problematize global reform efforts and offers a new way of understanding curriculum as a manifestation of national identity. In the context of globalisation and demographic change, the internationalisation of society is becoming increasingly important, why these anthology raises the awareness for this topic. The first part deals with the topic 'spatial construction through migrants', focusing on the culturally differentiated construction of spaces and landscapes from a theoretical point of view. From a social perspective, the shifts in such needs/requirements and values that people tie to different parts of their spatial environment are of particular interest. For example due to globalisation processes, identity constructions underlie a growing erosion process, concerning the understanding of space and landscape as well as their acquisition. Thus, the different levels of spatial planning are confronted with further differentiated demands in terms of space and landscape presenting major challenges. Based on different case studies, the second topic ‘migration and specific spaces’ that follows the theoretical considerations, reflects spatial demands of migrants and the potential of internationalisation. The selected case studies mainly deal with rural areas as well as the internationalisation in those cities which were not in the academic focus until now. At first, the focus is on the investigation of spatial acquisitions and demands of US-American, Muslim and Turkish migrants. Then the housing situation of migrants is the focal point. This includes the cross-border commuters at the German-Luxembourgish border. The following part is devoted to the potential which can be accompanied by the increasing internationalisation of the society. This is done on the one hand with a theoretical example of identity, home as well as inclusion and exclusion. On the other hand identities and self-attributions of repatriates (so called Aussiedler and Spätaussiedler) from former Soviet Union in Rhineland-Palatinate are discussed. Finally and based on the different articles, recommodations are derived and discussed for the future spatial development that arise in the course of internationalisation of society. The contributions of the anthology are made by: Julia Anslinger, Diedrich Bruns, Chantal Hermes, Jan Hilligardt, Martina Hülz, Bernhard Köppen, Olaf Kühne, Birte Nienaber, Florian Paech, Alexandra Reich, Ursula Roos and Antje Schönwald.

How are copyright infringements on the Internet responded to? This study outlines the international, European as well as national legal frameworks with a particular focus on the law of the EU Member States France, the UK and Germany. As regards the analysis of national law, the study differentiates between enforcement mechanism against end-users directly and mechanisms that are directed against infringing materials as such. The study highlights that copyright enforcement on the Internet is a struggle to find the right target and an effective, yet proportionate enforcement mechanism. In addition to the outline and analysis of national approaches in terms of compatibility with fundamental rights and European law, a focus is set on questions of digital evidence and technological feasibility/efficiency of individual enforcement mechanisms. This volume examines European perspectives on the historical relations that women have maintained with information and communication technologies (ICTs), since the telegraph. Features: describes how gendered networks have formed around ICT since the late 19th Century; reviews the gendered issues revealed by the conflict between the actress Ms Sylviac and the French telephone administration in 1904, or by ‘feminine’ blogs; examines how gender representations, age categories, and uses of ICT interact and are mutually formed in children’s magazines; illuminates the participation of women in the early days of computing, through a case study on the Rothamsted Statistics Department; presents a comparative study of women in computing in France, Finland and the UK, revealing similar gender divisions within the ICT professions of these countries; discusses diversity interventions and the part that history could (and should) play to ensure women do not take second place in specific occupational sectors. The current retrenchment of the welfare states is buffering the growing demographic and economic pressures in European countries at the expense of the young and the elderly. However, both investment in the young, which determines a society’s future, and providing public support for the elderly, the most deserving needy group, are seen as musts. This book encompasses a selection of empirical studies reflecting on when and why the young and the elderly are at risk in several (mostly Western) European countries. Contributions in the book examine the educational achievement and the labor market entry of youths, particularly those who have a migration background, the poverty risk experienced by the elderly, especially if they are also immigrants and/or women, the pension outcomes of former cross-border workers, the simulated consequeces of a recent pension benefit reform as well as those of a potential reform including financial assets and housing wealth in old-age income protection, and finally the extent, and possible erosion, of the support for government providing child-care and protecting the elderly. Preface – Wim van Oorschot Introduction – Ioana Salagean, Catalina Lomos & Anne Hartung 1. Does ethnic capital contribute to the educational outcomes of individuals with Turkish background in Europe? – Sait Bayrakdar 2. Young adults at risk in Germany: The impact of vocational training on the ethnic gap at labour market entry – Anne Hartung 3.

Was lernen die Kinder dabei? [less ▲]

This dissertation analyses the relationships among the issues of identity, power and the museum and investigates how these factors are linked to the museum’s social and educational role. It focuses on two exhibitions that deal with the subject of identities in Luxembourg: 'ABC – Luxembourg for beginners … and advanced!', held at the Musée d’Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg (2012-2013), and 'iLux. Identities in Luxembourg', shown at the Musée Dräi Eechelen (2012-2013). It is common knowledge that protest movements do not persist over long periods. Generally, movements either disappear into oblivion or transform into a NGO or a political party. The World Social Forum (WSF) is the relict of the global justice movements of the turn of the millennium. Even after more than a decade after the first WSF in 2001 in Porto Alegre (Brazil) the protest events still mobilize thousands of activists against a neoliberal world order. With an extensive ethnographic research, Christian Schröder keeps track of the WSF from its origin to the WSF 2013 in Tunisia. The central research question is how the movement – unlike many other movements – manages to reproduce itself as movement since 2001. The research process based on Grounded Theory Methodology let to the development of theoretical concept called transpoiesis that serves to describe the mechanism of permanent reinvention of (transnational) movements. This book examines the multiple ways in which rural regions in Europe are being restructured through globalization and the regional development responses that they have adopted. It provides an understanding of the key challenges and opportunities for rural regions arising from the major economic, social, political and cultural changes associated with globalization, including trade liberalization and economic deregulation, increased international migration, and the rise of global consciousness about environmental issues. Drawing on examples and findings from a major European research project, DERREG, the book presents detailed case studies of ten regions in different parts of Europe, exploring the factors that lead to different experiences of globalization in each of the regions, and highlighting examples of good practice in regional development responses. The book concludes by proposing a typology of regional responses to globalization and considering the policy implications of the research findings. As such, ’Globalization and Europe’s Rural Regions’ is important reading for geographers, sociologists, planners and economists interested in understanding the impact of globalization in rural regions, and for rural development professionals seeking to mobilize effective responses. The current work focuses on theoretical and practical aspects of the analysis and publication of important literary texts using the methods of digital humanities, as well as corpus and computational linguistics. The oeuvre of Michel Rodange in the Luxembourgish language provides the basic material for this study. This includes the works ‘Renert oder de Fuuss am Frack an a Maansgréisst‘ - ca. 40.000 Tokens, ‘Dem Léiweckerche säi Lidd‘ – ca. 5.000 Tokens, ‘Dem Grof Sigfrid seng Goldkuemer‘ – ca. 15.000 Tokens and two poems – ca. 500 Tokens. On the empirical level the work involves compiling a corpus with text critical and linguistic annotations and its presentation as a web portal. A very interesting interdependency arises at this point between theory and practice. It is possible to use the created annotations in order to investigate the oeuvre from a philological point of view on the one hand; on the other hand one can use this knowledge in the development of tools, which can create similar or new annotations and improve their correctness. The text critical annotations consist of reading variants, corrections and a word glossary, whereas the linguistic annotations are of an orthographical, morphological (also including word classes and lemmata) and phraseological nature. The annotations are codes in XML. The first step in working with one’s own corpus is its digitalization. In the case of manuscripts this occurred by means of manual transcription, but the prints were digitized with the help of OCR-software. At this stage the texts were already well organized and enriched with the initial annotations and metadata. At first sight less important but still useful information such as page numbers, line breaks, chapters etc. were marked. However in compiling a corpus from an important literary work the conservation of text critical annotations is of special significance. In order to create such annotations the theoretical principles of textual criticism first needed to be discussed. Then the most important phenomena, such as text fragments, corrections, deletions etc., were documented. For poorly readable areas new interpretations were proposed and those from other editions were compared and discussed. The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) offers a number of XML-elements to organize such annotations. It was possible to limit much manual work by using tools such as TUSTEP or oXygen as well as scripting languages, e.g. Perl. These provide a powerful technique of “regular expressions”, which can automate the search and replacement work at an abstract level. The next and very useful step is tokenization. At this level text critical annotations almost overlap with linguistic annotations. A fuzzy border was defined for tokens and they were marked with their own XML-element. It is essential for further investigation to consider and study the language of the author. For this purpose special attention was paid to poetic styles in the Luxembourgish language of the 19th century, literary genres, and the orthography and spelling of the author. On the empirical level, the analysis of the corpus from a linguistic point of view with the help of corpus linguistics methods, e.g. extraction of multi word units, forms the scientific basis for later digital presentation of the oeuvre. For this purpose a number of tools for analyzing the oeuvre quantitatively as well as qualitatively were designed and developed. The output of these tools is discussed in the current work. Here theories from classical linguistics e.g. morphology, phraseology and corpus linguistics e.g. POS-Taggers, concordances and collocational analysis, were discussed. All in all the following programs were implemented and described: Tokenizer, Frequency List, POS-Trainer, POS-Tagger, Lemmatizer and further programs for word formation and phraseological analysis. The program for morphological analysis and Lemmatizer are basically rule-based, whereas most of the other programs work by means of statistics. Hidden Markov Models, which derive from probabilistic theory, underlie the assignment of part of speech tags to words. For phraseological analysis many current statistical models such as z-score, t-score, mutual information, chi-square-test and fisher’s exact test were implemented and tested. Chapter 3.4 is dedicated to the output of the program for morphological analysis and discusses word formation in the oeuvre of Michel Rodange. Chapter 3.6 focuses on the interpretation of the output for collocational- phraseological analysis. As a result of this investigation it became apparent that many automatically identified phraseological units in Michel Rodange’s oeuvre are not only a part of Luxembourgish language and culture, but also found in other European cultures. Whether in finance, care provision or education, current crises affect the stability of models of legitimation, and need to be reconsidered in the context of scientific and political debates. Are forms of legitimation of, say, democracy, service provision, social inequalities and claims to truth or rule becoming fragile? Are new interpretive horizons appearing in discourses of crisis, or are the received, previously unquestioned models of justification perhaps becoming even more convincing? The essays in this anthology investigate the development and course of the fault lines in justification in areas as diverse as politics, finance and labor, education, academia and the media. [less ▲]
