[more ▼] The type of work that designers are tackling has grown exponentially—from the design of our buildings, streets, education, food, and health care to the design of our communications, political, and economic systems and networks. Throughout history, manifestos have functioned as statements of purpose, stimulating an exchange of ideas. In a contemporary context, curators Zoë Ryan and Meredith Carruthers use the Biennial as a forum for posing questions and generating dialogue. How can we reconsider the manifesto, harnessing its power to frame pertinent ideas while exploring the new forms it might take? This richly illustrated volume presents more than fifty international projects by designers working across disciplines as well as essays by leading thinkers in design. The projects and thoughts are open to interpretation but have the potential to instigate new modes of thought and outcomes, encouraging us all to pause and think about the future. The treatise makes somehow a synthesis in associating or confronting like samples, many of the above-mentioned sources, in order to obtain fresh insights. Cross-linked with new interpretations of certain works and additional information gathered in firsthand interviews with people that knew Majerus during his lifetime, the dissertation allows to outline more evidently the artist’s discourse and the specific qualities of his oeuvre. The art-historical relevance of Majerus around the turn of the millennium gets clearly delimited. The research distinctly features the new, the unexpected, the originality and the singularity of Michel Majerus' approach and permits to outline the importance of the artist for his time and beyond. [more ▼] The book investigates the stability of inverter driven power island grids, thus power grids, in which only renewable energy resourced feed their energy exclusively with voltage source inverters. Research on stability of power grids has been conducted for decades. Due to the increased feed-in of renewable energy sources, in the future there will be the possibility to run parts of the power grids in island mode, e.g. during large grid blackouts, disconnected from the large interconnected European power grid. This rises some concerns about the stability of such purely inverter driven power grids, as inverter do not have stabilising rotating masses - and thus no inertia. Their controllers and actuators are by orders of magnitude faster than classic synchronous generator governors, which guarantee a degree frequency stability due to their large rotor inertia. If energy is fed in with inverters with much smaller time constants, only small amounts of energy suffice to introduce disturbances in the grid. The analysis presented in the book is not limited to specific grid structures or topologies and can be applied to grids of different voltage levels. The number of inverters in the analysed grid can be very high and arbitrary inverter models can be used for the analysis. Until now no generic, analytic model existed for this type of analysis of widely distributed grids with high numbers of generators. [more ▼] In her examination of neglected diaristic texts, Anne-Marie Millim expands the field of Victorian diary criticism by complicating the conventional notion of diaries as mainly private sources of biographical information. She argues that for Elizabeth Rigby Eastlake, Henry Crabb Robinson, George Eliot, George Gissing, John Ruskin, Edith Simcox and Gerard Manley Hopkins, the exposure or publication of their diaries was a real possibility that they either coveted or feared. Millim locates the diary at the intersection of the public and private spheres to show that well-known writers and public figures of both sexes exploited the diary's self-reflexive, diurnal structure in order to enhance their creativity and establish themselves as authors. Their object was to manage, rather than to indulge or repress, their emotions for the purposes of perfecting their observational and critical skills. Reading these diaries as literary works in their own right, Millim analyses their crucial role in the construction of authorship. By relating these Victorian writers' diaries to their publications and to contemporary works of cultural criticism, Millim shows the multifarious ways in which diaristic practices, emotional management and professional output corresponded to experiences of the literary marketplace and to nineteenth-century codes of propriety. [more ▼] Dynamic spectrum access employing cognitive radios has been proposed, in order to opportunistically use underutilized spectrum portions of a heavily licensed electromagnetic spectrum. Cognitive radios opportunistically share the spectrum, while avoiding any harmful interference to the primary licensed users. One major category of cognitive radios consists of is interweave cognitive radios. In this category, cognitive radios employ spectrum sensing to detect the empty bands of the radio spectrum, also known as spectrum holes. Upon detection of such a spectrum hole, cognitive radios dynamically share this empty band. However, as soon as the primary user appears in the corresponding band, cognitive radios have to vacate the band and look for a new spectrum hole. This way, reliable spectrum sensing becomes a key functionality of a cognitive radio network. The hidden terminal problem and fading effects have been shown to limit the reliability of spectrum sensing. Distributed cooperative detection has therefore been proposed to improve the detection performance of a cognitive radio network. In this thesis, a distributed detection scheme based on hard fusion of local results is considered. Each cognitive radio senses the spectrum and sends the result to the fusion center, and there the final decision is made about the presence or absence of the primary user. Note that, in general, cognitive radios are low-power sensors and thus energy consumption becomes a critical issue. In this thesis, several energy-efficient approaches are proposed, in order to minimize the maximum average energy consumption per sensor, while satisfying the sensing reliability of the cognitive radio network. The sensing reliability is defined by a lower bound on the probability of detection and an upper bound on the probability of false alarm. This way, the primary user is protected from the cognitive radio transmitter’s interference and also the chance of losing spectrum access through erroneous detection of the primary user in an empty band is constrained. First, a censoring scheme is considered where cognitive radios send their results to the fusion center only if they are deemed to be informative. Second, a combined censoring and truncated sequential sensing scheme is depicted which is shown to be more energy-efficient than the former case due to the sensing energy reduction. And third, a combined censoring and sleeping scheme is discussed where on top of censoring, each cognitive radio switches off its sensing module with a specific sleeping rate, in order to save energy both on transmission and sensing. It is shown that all the proposed schemes, particularly combined censoring and sleeping as well as censored truncated sequential sensing delivers significant energy savings. Further, we conclude that when a cognitive radio system is appropriately well-designed in terms of energy efficiency, increasing the number of cooperative cognitive sensors, not only improves the detection performance, but also reduces the average energy consumption of individual cognitive radios. Finally, an optimal fusion strategy for energy-constrained hard-fusion based cognitive radio networks is presented, which optimizes the network throughput subject to a constraint on the average energy consumption of individual radios and a constraint on the amount of interference to the primary user. It is shown that the majority rule is either optimal or close to optimal in terms of the network throughput. Berlin-based architect/writer Markus Miessen tackles the pervasive contemporary overuse of the concept of ''participation'' in the final part of his paradigm-changing trilogy. Miessen argues for an urgent inversion of participation, reflecting cogently on the limits and traps of its real motivations. He dreads breeding the next generation of facilitators and mediators, insisting on conflict as an enabling, instead of disabling, force. Dénes Farkas’s work is haunted by a drama of not delivering a trust to a singular evidence of this world: a world as he found it. Hysterically reproduced paper maquettes of choreographed architecture, imprisoned within a clumsy, photographic frame, are abstract shelters for imagined and unspoken texts. Words are characters in performance of a world as a text. As a proposition, Farkas’s exhibition and publication for the Estonian Pavilion of the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 is "an absent book" and yet "the book to come." The installation is a piece of spatial, rhythmical writing; a quintet of interiors woven of autonomous though intertwined, poetic fragments of quasi-domestic setting: a library, a garden, an absent cinema, a spatial book, an obsession chamber (a locus of deranged architect and non-writer). "A story? No. No stories, never again," Farkas repeats after Maurice Blanchot, while rehearsing his art of ultimate denial and rejection. In such a flattened, horizontal world, art institutions are finding it hard to survive. After all, institutions traditionally represent verticality: historic profundity, tradition, dignity and certainty. In Institutional Attitudes, Kenny Cupers, Bart De Baere, Ann Demeester, Jimmie Durham, Alex Farquharson, Mark Fisher, Pascal Gielen, Marc Jacobs, Sonja Lavaert, Thijs Lijster, Isabell Lorey, Markus Miessen, Chantal Mouffe, Gerald Raunig, Patricia Reed, Nicolaus Schafhausen and Blake Stimson explore the future identity of art institutions. Will they be able to reinvent historical profundity? Is this desirable? And if so, what would these new vertical institutions look like? [more ▼] Chinese Translation of The Nightmare of Participation Welcome to Harmonistan! Berlin-based architect/writer Markus Miessen tackles the pervasive contemporary overuse of the concept of ''participation'' in the final part of his paradigm-changing trilogy. Supported by a nostalgic veneer of worthiness, phony solidarity and political correctness, participation has become the default of politicians withdrawing from responsibility. Miessen argues for an urgent inversion of participation, reflecting cogently on the limits and traps of its real motivations. He dreads breeding the next generation of facilitators and mediators, insisting on conflict as an enabling, instead of disabling, force. With refreshing candor, this internationally known architect and professor outlines a format for acting as uninvited irritant, forcing entry into fields of knowledge that arguably benefit from exterior thinking. Sometimes, Miessen writes, democracy has to be avoided at all costs! [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 22 (0 UL)![]() ; ; et al Book published by Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. [more ▼] Drawing on philosophy, the history of psychology and the natural sciences, this book proposes a new theoretical foundation for the psychology of the life course. It features the study of unique individual life courses in their social and cultural environment, combining the perspectives of developmental and sociocultural psychology, psychotherapy, learning sciences and geronto-psychology. In particular, the book highlights semiotic processes, specific to human development, that allow us to draw upon past experiences, to choose among alternatives and to plan our futures. Imagination is an important outcome of semiotic processes and enables us to deal with daily constraints and transitions, and promotes the transformation of social representation and symbolic systems - giving each person a unique style, or 'melody', of living. The book concludes by questioning the methodology and epistemology of current life course studies. These rules are formed by specialists dealing with the management of frequency spectrum, but – when adopted by Administrations – become binding rules of international law. However, based on the rules of physics - the system of the ITU as such is an old and amazing structure of self-constraints and self-regulations which deserves scientific attention. Lukas Feiriss has assembled a collection of international contributions for Space Matters, a publication of the space & design strategies study program of the Univeristy of Art and Design, Linz, Austria to create an inspiring expansion of the contemporary discourse on space. The publication addresses cultural resarchers and readers in creative professions – architects, artists, curators, scientists and students in all the related fields as well as those members of a broader audience that are interested in the incorporation of space and the pratices with which it is designed in cultural, social and humanities-oriented contexts. [more ▼] The project aims to inspire a renewed debate about the concept of public space today. Like many other major European cities, Munich is confronted with the need to address the significance and value of public space as the relevance of the public sphere undergoes a potentially fundamental shift. Public space has traditionally functioned as a place of assembly, for exchanging ideas, and a forum for urban society. However, due to the impact of digital and social media, these activities are now increasingly moving into the virtual realm. Taking this technological and, by extension, social, shift as a starting-point, A Space Called Public / Hoffentlich Öffentlich poses questions concerning the redefinition of public space. How does a city constitute its own identity in 2013? The program consists of performative, interactive and idea-based projects as well as other non-monumental statements. Its open structure is designed to take place over many months, creating space for curiosity, discovery and a dialogue with the public as the individual artistic strands evolve together. The exhibition features works by Iván Argote & Pauline Bastard, Han Chong, Funda, Stephen Hall & Li Li Ren, Robert Keil & Helin Alas, Martin Kippenberger, Ragnar Kjartansson, Alexander Laner, Namill, Henrik Olesen, Kirsten Pieroth, Ed Ruscha, David Shrigley, Sissel Tolaas, Tatiana Trouvé, Peter Weibel and Elmgreen & Dragset. A special event will take place onJune 6 to mark the occasion of all projects being on view.
