Border or bordering practice? Changing perspectives on borders and challenges of praxeological approachesE-print/Working paper (2021)
In Border Studies, the ongoing discussions on methodological and theoretical questions have led to the development of transformed approaches and vocabulary for border research. This contribution highlights the shift from ‘border’ to ‘bordering practice’ and questions its sources in the scientific context, such as the cultural turn and the related practice turn. Despite the popular use of the term ‘practice’ in Border Studies, sociological practice theories are not at the center of the development of dynamic concepts for studying borders. The article emphasizes the compatibility of sociological practice theories with the practice and process orientation in Border Studies. It gives a short overview of praxeological thinking in sociology and identifies methodological challenges for Border Studies targeting the development of praxeological re-search perspectives for borders.

La coopération transfrontalière comme formation de pratiques: perspectives pour une approche de recherche alternativein Dziub (Ed.) Le Transfrontalier. Pratiques et représentations (2020)
In order to achieve our objective, we will first provide an overview of the development of cooperation research, its characterizing orientations and establish a link to the topic of this contribution (chapter 2). The following presentation of practice theories introduces praxeo-logical thinking and provides a condensed outline of the state of the art of this cultural soci-ological theory (chapter 3). Building on this, we will develop our idea of a cross-border practice formation that breaks with the premises of traditional cooperation research, and we provide an alternative perspectivation by outlining four challenges of CBC (chapter 4). In consideration of some research-practical particularities which are linked to the suggested analytical perspective, we eventually offer (chapter 5) an outlook on the development of an alternative research approach which is compatible within a multidisciplinary context.

Cross-border cooperation as practice formation. Perspectives for an alternative research approachin Beck, Joachim (Ed.) Transdisciplinary discourses on cross-border cooperation in Europe (2019)
The paper presents a practice-sociological approach to the description and analysis of cross-border cooperation. For this purpose, the development of cooperation research, its characteristic orientations as well as the fundamentals of practical theoretical thinking will be outlined. Based on this, the heuristic figure of thought of cross-border practice formation is developed, which breaks with the premises of conventional cooperation research. It will be further differentiated on the basis of four challenges of cross-border cooperation, in order to arrive at an alternative perspective on cross-border cooperation. The following is an outlook, which deals with the research-specific features of the approach presented, with a view to a future practice-sociological and multidisciplinary cooperation research.
