Replication studies are important for the empirical research process. Yet, while there is an increased awareness of the need for replication in management research, it appears that such studies are rarely published in leading management journals. Importantly, we lack a comprehensive overview of replication studies in the top management journals that spans all sub-disciplines. Our systematic review closes this gap and provides an overview of the prevalence, types, outcomes, and impact of replication studies in management journals. We find that differences in the prevalence of replications between sub-disciplines exist and that most replications are wide replications. With regard to the replication outcome, our review shows that the share of non-confirming replications is low. Moreover, such replications are cited less often than confirming replications pointing towards a confirmation bias in management research. We discuss the implications of our results for authors, reviewers, and editors of management journals. [less ▲]

In the AdS/CFT correspondence, amplitudes associated to connected bulk manifolds with disconnected boundaries have presented a longstanding mystery. A possible interpretation is that they reflect the effects of averaging over an ensemble of boundary theories. But in examples in dimension D≥3, an appropriate ensemble of boundary theories does not exist. Here we sharpen the puzzle by identifying a class of "sub-threshold" observables that we claim do not show effects of ensemble averaging. These are amplitudes that do not involve black hole states. To support our claim, we explore the example of D=3, and show that connected solutions of Einstein's equations with disconnected boundary never contribute to sub-threshold observables. To demonstrate this requires some novel results about the renormalized volume of a hyperbolic three-manifold, which we prove using modern methods in hyperbolic geometry. Why then do any observables show apparent ensemble averaging? We propose that this reflects the chaotic nature of black hole physics and the fact that the Hilbert space describing a black hole does not have a large N limit. [less ▲]

The convergence of mobile edge computing (MEC) and blockchain is transforming the current computing services in wireless Internet-of-Things networks, by enabling task offloading with security enhancement based on blockchain mining. Yet the existing approaches for these enabling technologies are isolated, providing only tailored solutions for specific services and scenarios. To fill this gap, we propose a novel cooperative task offloading and blockchain mining (TOBM) scheme for a blockchain-based MEC system, where each edge device not only handles computation tasks but also deals with block mining for improving system utility. To address the latency issues caused by the blockchain operation in MEC, we develop a new Proof-of-Reputation consensus mechanism based on a lightweight block verification strategy. To accommodate the highly dynamic environment and high-dimensional system state space, we apply a novel distributed deep reinforcement learning-based approach by using a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed TOBM scheme in terms of enhanced system reward, improved offloading utility with lower blockchain mining latency, and better system utility, compared to the existing cooperative and non-cooperative schemes. The paper concludes with key technical challenges and possible directions for future blockchain-based MEC research. [less ▲]

Female comparative disadvantage refers to the mismatch of the female with respect to achievements in different dimensions of human well-being in comparison with the corresponding achievements of the male. This paper axiomatically derives a general family of female comparative disadvantage indicators which has very important policy implications. The axioms employed are shown to be ‘independent’. An empirical illustration of the general index is provided using the UNDP data on mean years of schooling, life expectancy at birth and gross national income per capita in 2018. Results show that female comparative disadvantage is not necessarily related to standard measures of human development, such as the HDI, and is present even in countries reaching very high human development. The factor where policy intervention is needed the most is income. [less ▲]

To address known privacy problems with the EMV standard, EMVCo have proposed a Blinded Diffie-Hellman key establishment protocol, which is intended to be part of a future 2nd Gen EMV protocol. We point out that active attackers were not previously accounted for in the privacy requirements of this proposal protocol, and demonstrate that an active attacker can compromise unlinkability within a distance of 100cm. Here, we adopt a strong definition of unlinkability that does account for active attackers and propose an enhancement of the protocol proposed by EMVCo. We prove that our protocol does satisfy strong unlinkability, while preserving authentication. [less ▲]

Delivered at a hearing of the Special Committee on Belgium's Colonial Past of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, this speech challenges the alleged lawfulness of colonial policies under the intertemporal law principle in public international law based on two considerations. First, due to the development of the history of international law as a fully fledged discipline, we now have a more granular view of the law applicable to international relations in the past. More particularly, recent studies in the field of the history of international law have shown that many colonial policies (e.g. mass murder of colonized populations, "excessive" forced labour, or even the unilateral imposition of colonial rule) were actually illegal under positive late 19th century international law. Second, a simple mechanical application of the intertemporal law principle is now increasingly understood as impossible to reconcile with the universal character of today's international community, sparking increasing calls in favour of a "decolonization" of this principle in order to rid it of its inherently discriminatory nature. We present prevalent results concerning generalized versions of the $T_p^\alpha$ spaces, initially introduced by Calderón and Zygmund. We notably show that the logarithmic correction appearing in the quasi-characterization of such spaces is mandatory for almost every function; it is in particular true for the Hölder spaces, for which the existence of the correction was showed necessary for a specific function. We also show that almost every function from $T_p^α (x0 )$ has α as generalized Hölder exponent at $x_0$. [less ▲]

High Performance Computing (HPC) is nowadays a strategic asset required to sustain the surging demands for massive processing and data-analytic capabilities. In practice, the effective management of such large scale and distributed computing infrastructures is left to a Resource and Job Management System (RJMS). This essential middleware component is responsible for managing the computing resources, handling user requests to allocate resources while providing an optimized framework for starting, executing and monitoring jobs on the allocated resources. The University of Luxembourg has been operating for 15 years a large academic HPC facility which relies since 2017 on the Slurm RJMS introduced on top of the flagship cluster Iris. The acquisition of a new liquid-cooled supercomputer named Aion which was released in 2021 was the occasion to deeply review and optimize the seminal Slurm configuration, the resource limits defined and the sustaining fairsharing algorithm. This paper presents the outcomes of this study and details the implemented RJMS policy. The impact of the decisions made over the supercomputers workloads is also described. In particular, the performance evaluation conducted highlights that when compared to the seminal configuration, the described and implemented environment brought concrete and measurable improvements with regards the platform utilization (+12.64%), the jobs efficiency (as measured by the average Wall-time Request Accuracy, improved by 110.81%) or the management and funding (increased by 10%). The systems demonstrated sustainable and scalable HPC performances, and this effort has led to a negligible penalty on the average slowdown metric (response time normalized by runtime), which was increased by 0.59% for job workloads covering a complete year of exercise. Overall, this new setup has been in production for 18 months on both supercomputers and the updated model proves to bring a fairer and more satisfying experience to the end users. The proposed configurations and policies may help other HPC centres when designing or improving the RJMS sustaining the job scheduling strategy at the advent of computing capacity expansions. Summary: Background The developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs) are the most severe group of epilepsies which co-present with developmental delay and intellectual disability (ID). DEEs usually occur in people without a family history of epilepsy and have emerged as primarily monogenic, with damaging rare mutations found in 50% of patients. Little is known about the genetic architecture of patients with DEEs in whom no pathogenic variant is identified. Polygenic risk scoring (PRS) is a method that measures a person's common genetic burden for a trait or condition. Here, we used PRS to test whether genetic burden for epilepsy is relevant in individuals with DEEs, and other forms of epilepsy with ID. Methods: Genetic data on 2,759 cases with DEEs, or epilepsy with ID presumed to have a monogenic basis, and 447,760 population-matched controls were analysed. We compared PRS for ‘all epilepsy’, ‘focal epilepsy’, and ‘genetic generalised epilepsy’ (GGE) between cases and controls. We performed pairwise comparisons between cases stratified for identifiable rare deleterious genetic variants and controls. Findings 0.0002) relative to controls, which explain between 0.08% and 3.3% of phenotypic variance. PRS was increased in cases both with and without an identified deleterious variant of major effect, and there was no significant difference in PRS between the two groups. Interpretation: We provide evidence that common genetic variation contributes to the aetiology of DEEs and other forms of epilepsy with ID, even when there is a known pathogenic variant of major effect. These results provide insight into the genetic underpinnings of the severe epilepsies and warrant a shift in our understanding of the aetiology of the DEEs as complex, rather than monogenic, disorders. Critical perspectives of entrepreneurship have gained increasing traction over the last two decades. The transformative potential of critical research resides in challenging some of entrepreneurship research’s epistemological, ontological and theoretical assumptions, with a view to offering a range of alternatives. Critical research in entrepreneurship has remained fragmented, however, due to its heterogeneous theoretical lineages and compartmentalized and niche interests. Addressing this situation, our objective is to intensify the space of critique in entrepreneurship research by offering a theoretically-informed typology that delineates different manifestations of ‘criticalness’. Our overarching contribution is to advance a typology distinguishing four ideal-types of critical entrepreneurship research based on its evaluative emphases (referred to as ‘valence’) and the meta-theoretical assumptions informing its critical operation (called ‘paradigmatic orientation’). By demonstrating the variegated political, ethical and ideological interests and preoccupations that critical studies serve within different management sub-disciplines, the typology provides a conceptual vocabulary for making sense of and synthesizing critical perspectives across scholarly boundaries. Also, it helps to reposition understandings of critique as gestures of negativity by stimulating a greater appreciation of the generative potential of critique and the theoretical and philosophical possibilities that this can bring to our scholarly community. The objective of this paper is to identify the economic and social challenges of telework in the context of a cross-border labor market : Greater Region SaarLorLux, a cross-border area including Luxembourg, Lorraine (in France), Saarland and Rhineland Palatinate (in Germany) and Wallonia (in Belgium). This area is strongly concerned by the flows of border workers (nearly 260,000 in 2021). Teleworking has been imposed by the pandemic and is not without raising a certain number of questions: legal, social, fiscal.... linked to the presence of the border between the place of residence and the place of work. In a context of mobility and congestion problems, another form of remote work has developed in recent years : coworking spaces. During the COVID-19 crisis many institutions have started live and special collections related to web archives of the pandemic. Many libraries have also been involved in an initiative led by the IIPC (International Internet Preservation Consortium) to gather a huge international collection of web archives available through Archive-It. Taking as a starting point two research projects related to the analysis of the web archiving of the COVID crisis, that we conducted within WARCnet and through the AWAC2 cohort program, this presentation will focus on issues related to scalable reading, contextualization of datasets, FAIR data, sustainability, inclusiveness, etc., in order to unfold the challenges of these collections and of their analysis in a short and in a long term perspective.
