Although a number of policies tackling educational inequalities have been introduced in recent decades in Europe, educational inequalities exist to a varying extent both in different sub- and supranational contexts. In this article, we address the link between social and educational policies with respect to educational inequalities. Educational policies aim to guarantee opportunities throughout educational trajectories and beyond. They pertain to all areas and the entire duration of the human life. Our contribution to socialpolicy.ch introduces the ongoing Horizon 2020 project PIONEERED on educational inequalities by elaborating on the social problems behind those dis-parities, and by outlining the project’s conceptual and methodological approaches that join together multilevel, intersectional and life-course perspectives. Topological surface states of three-dimensional topological insulator nanoribbons and their distinct magnetoconductance properties are promising for topoelectronic applications and topological quantum computation. A crucial building block for nanoribbon-based circuits are three-terminal junctions. While the transport of topological surface states on a planar boundary is not directly affected by an in-plane magnetic field, the orbital effect cannot be neglected when the surface states are confined to the boundary of a nanoribbon geometry. Here, we report on the magnetotransport properties of such three-terminal junctions. We observe a dependence of the current on the in-plane magnetic field, with a distinct steering pattern of the surface state current towards a preferred output terminal for different magnetic field orientations. We demonstrate that this steering effect originates from the orbital effect, trapping the phase-coherent surface states in the different legs of the junction on opposite sides of the nanoribbon and breaking the left-right symmetry of the transmission across the junction. The reported magnetotransport properties demonstrate that an in-plane magnetic field is not only relevant but also very useful for the characterization and manipulation of transport in three-dimensional topological insulator nanoribbon-based junctions and circuits, acting as a topoelectric current switch. Skyrmions are topological magnetic textures which can arise in non-centrosymmetric ferromagnetic materials. In most systems experimentally investigated to date, skyrmions emerge as classical objects. However, the discovery of skyrmions with nanometer length scales has sparked interest in their quantum properties. Quantum corrections to the classical magnetic textures have already been considered in the semiclassical regime. Here, we go beyond this limit by investigating quantum skyrmions in the deep quantum regime. We use density matrix renormalization group techniques to study two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and discover a broad region in the zero temperature phase diagram which hosts quantum skyrmion lattice ground states. We argue that this novel quantum skyrmion phase can be detected experimentally in the magnetization profile via local magnetic polarization measurements as well as in the spin structure factor measurable via neutron scattering experiments. Finally, we explore the resulting quantum skyrmion state, analyze its real space polarization profile and show that it is a non-classical state featuring entanglement between quasiparticle and environment mainly localized near the boundary spins of the skyrmion. Ausgangspunkt des PAN-VAL Projekts „Aktives Altern in Luxemburg“, das in enger Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Universität Luxemburg und GERO durchgeführt wurde, war die Frage, inwieweit soziale Aktivitäten und Angebote von einer diversen Population genutzt werden. In der Studie wurden die Bedürfnisse und Erwartungen von Menschen über 50 (Luxemburger*innen und Nicht-Luxemburger*innen) in Bezug auf ihre sozialen Netzwerke, ihr soziales Eingebundensein, ihre Freizeitaktivitäten innerhalb ihrer Gemeinde und ihr Zugehörigkeitsgefühl sowie ihre Zufriedenheit mit verschiedenen Lebensbereichen untersucht. Gleichzeitig zielte die Studie darauf ab, zu ermitteln, welche Faktoren eine Teilnahme begünstigen und was Menschen daran hindert, an öffentlichen Freizeitangeboten teilzunehmen. In der vorliegenden Broschüre werden die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der quantitativen und der qualitativen Teilstudien zusammengeführt sowie im Anschluss daran Hinweise für die Gestaltung von Angeboten gegeben. Hierbei werden Module präsentiert, um ältere Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund besser einzubeziehen und Dienstleistungen für ein aktives Altern einer immer diverseren Zielgruppe zu entwickeln. Die Broschüre richtet sich damit an alle, die sich mit der Gestaltung von Angeboten für soziale Aktivitäten – für Ältere, aber nicht nur – im Kontext kultureller Diversität befassen. [less ▲]

Le point de départ du projet PAN-VAL « Vieillissement actif au Luxembourg », qui a été mené à bien en collaboration étroite avec l’Université du Luxembourg et GERO, était la question de savoir dans quelle mesure les activités sociales et les offres sont utilisées par une population diversifiée. Dans le cadre de cette étude, les besoins et les attentes de personnes de plus de 50 ans (Luxembourgeois(es) et non-Luxembourgeois(es)) ont été étudiés en ce qui concerne leurs réseaux sociaux, leur intégration sociale, leurs activités de loisir au sein de leur communauté et leur sentiment d’appartenance ainsi que leur satisfaction avec divers domaines de la vie. En même temps, l’objectif de l’étude était de déterminer quels facteurs favorisent une participation et ce qui empêche les personnes de participer aux offres de loisirs publiques. Dans la brochure présente ont été réunis les résultats les plus importants des études partielles quantitatives et qualitatives suivis d’indications pour l’organisation d’off res. On y présentera des éléments afin de mieux intégrer les personnes âgées issues de l’immigration et de mettre au point des services pour un vieillissement actif d’un groupe cible toujours plus diversifié. Ainsi, cette brochure s’adresse à tous ceux qui s’occupent de l’organisation d’offres pour des activités sociales – pour personnes âgées, mais pas uniquement – dans le contexte de la diversité culturelle. EdDSA is a digital signature scheme based on elliptic curves in Edwards form that is supported in the latest incarnation of the TLS protocol (i.e. TLS version 1.3). The straightforward way of verifying an EdDSA signature involves a costly double-scalar multiplication of the form kP - lQ where P is a "fixed" point (namely the generator of the underlying elliptic-curve group) and Q is only known at run time. This computation makes a verification not only much slower than a signature generation, but also more memory demanding. In the present paper we compare two implementations of EdDSA verification using Ed25519 as case study; the first is speed-optimized, while the other aims to achieve low RAM footprint. The speed-optimized variant performs the double-scalar multiplication in a simultaneous fashion and uses a Joint-Sparse Form (JSF) representation for the two scalars. On the other hand, the memory-optimized variant splits the computation of kP - lQ into two separate parts, namely a fixed-base scalar multiplication that is carried out using a standard comb method with eight pre-computed points, and a variable-base scalar multiplication, which is executed by means of the conventional Montgomery ladder on the birationally-equivalent Montgomery curve. Our experiments with a 16-bit ultra-low-power MSP430 microcontroller show that the separated method is 24% slower than the simultaneous technique, but reduces the RAM footprint by 40%. This makes the separated method attractive for "lightweight" cryptographic libraries, in particular if both Ed25519 signature generation/verification and X25519 key exchange need to be supported. Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) are the trending materials when discussing solar cells. Their power conversion efficiency went from 3.8% to 25.5% in twelve years, making them extremely promising, especially when combined with silicon in a tandem configuration. This improvement has been achieved by finding the best candidates for charge extraction and by interface engineering, compositional engineering and surface passivation. However, the surface of the HOIPs is still not well understood, and the role of grains boundaries for example is still highly debated. Determining the intrinsic surface properties of HOIPs is therefore crucial to find the best passivation strategies or fabrication designs to limit the surface and interfacial losses, and further improve solar cell efficiencies. Currently, solution-based processes are the most used techniques for fabrication, even though their upscalability towards commercialization is highly unlikely, and the use of solvents, sometimes toxic, considerably alters the perovskite surface, which makes the interpretation of their characterization challenging and sometimes misleading. The aim of this thesis is to clarify the intrinsic surface properties of HOIPs, and mainly CH3NH3PbI3 (or MAPbI3), by using surface-sensitive techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). To that end, HOIP thin films are mainly fabricated by thermal co-evaporation to achieve pristine surfaces, and inert-gas transfer is used to avoid contamination before their characterization. The lateral variations of the local density of states of MAPbI3 and mixed halide HOIPs are investigated. The grain-to-grain and facet variations are linked to different density of surface states that pin the Fermi level at the surface, and different workfunctions (WF), which are both attributed for MAPbI3 to different surface terminations, and for the mixed HOIPs to an additional degradation of the perovskites. The effect of varying the methylammonium iodide (MAI) content, via the partial pressure, in co-evaporated MAPbI3 is studied and the excess of MAI proves to be detrimental, as it introduces low-dimensional perovskites and stacked perovskite sheets that considerably reduce its intrinsic stability. Therefore near-stoichiometric conditions are preferred and yield films more stable to light and heat and without photostriction. Nevertheless this intrinsic stability is still not optimal, and the continuous variations of the WF measured by KPFM upon prolonged illumination is investigated. Combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the photo-induced degradation of MAPbI3, and evaporation of I2 are revealed as the causes of these variations. Besides, by combining KPFM and photoluminescence (PL) techniques for different thicknesses and substrates, energy band diagrams can be drawn and unveil a bending of the bands in the bulk. Lastly, the surface sensitivity of HOIPs is investigated when they are intentionally put in contact with extrinsic factors such as oxygen and solvents, and the surface properties are shown to be considerably altered. In addition, passivation strategies are used to demonstrate how surfaces can be improved. [less ▲]

Seit 2016 ist Andreas Fickers Direktor des Luxemburg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) an dessen Konzeption, Aufbau und Organisation er maßgeblich beteiligt war. Das C2DH hat in den wenigen Jahren seiner Existenz eine ungeheure Strahlkraft weit über den europäischen Raum hinaus erreicht und gilt hinsichtlich seiner Forschungsleistung und -kompetenz im Bereich der Digital- und der Public History als sogenannte Leuchtturm-Institution. Sowohl die Arbeit des Direktors, als auch die Forschungsleistung des gesamten Instituts werden alle fünf Jahre von einer international besetzten Fachkommission evaluiert. Im September diesen Jahres wurde der Vertrag Andreas Fickers um weitere fünf Jahre verlängert [less ▲]
