We consider the problem of channel response estimation in cognitive fully adaptive radar (CoFAR). We show that this problem can be expressed as a constrained channel estimation problem exploiting the similarity between the channel impulse responses (CIRs) of the adjacent channels. We develop a constrained CIR estimation (CCIRE) algorithm enhancing estimation performance compared to the unconstrained CIR estimation where the similarity between the CIRs of the adjacent channels is not employed. Further, we we derive the Cram\'{e}r-Rao bound (CRB) for the CCIRE and show the optimality of the proposed CCIRE through comparing its performance with the derived CRB. [less ▲]

Innovative pharma-genomics and personalized medicine services are now possible thanks to the availability for processing and analysis of a large amount of genomic data. Operating on such databases, is possible to test for predisposition to diseases by searching for genomic variants on whole genomes as well as on exomes, which are collections of protein coding regions called exons. Genomic data are therefore shared amongst research institutes, public/private operators, and third parties, creating issues of privacy, ethics, and data protection because genome data are strictly personal and identifying. To prevent damages that could follow a data breach—a likely threat nowadays—and to be compliant with current data protection regulations, genomic data files should be encrypted, and the data processing algorithms should be privacy-preserving. Such a migration is not always feasible: not all operations can be implemented straightforwardly to be privacypreserving; a privacy-preserving version of an algorithm may not be as accurate for the purpose of biomedical analysis as the original; or the privacy-preserving version may not scale up when applied to genomic data processing because of inefficiency in computation time. In this work, we demonstrate that at least for a wellknown genomic data procedure for the analysis of copy number variants called copy number variations (CNV) a privacy-preserving analysis is possible and feasible. Our algorithm relies on Homomorphic Encryption, a cryptographic technique to perform calculations directly on the encrypted data. We test our implementation for performance and reliability, giving evidence that it is practical to study copy number variations and preserve genomic data privacy. Our proof-of-concept application successfully and efficiently searches for a patient’s somatic copy number variation changes by comparing the patient gene coverage in the whole exome with a healthy control exome coverage. Since all the genomics data are securely encrypted, the data remain protected even if they are transmitted or shared via an insecure environment like a public cloud. Being this the first study for privacy-preserving copy number variation analysis, we demonstrate the potential of recent Homomorphic Encryption tools in genomic applications. [less ▲]

COVID–19 is causing economic panic among people, governments, and businesses, requiring greater corporate social responsibility (CSR). Using a sample of Omani-listed firms, this study shows that CSR budgeting and spending have increased considerably during the pandemic. It also shows that CSR budgeting is positively affected by the increase in COVID–19 deaths. CSR spending increases with the number of COVID–19 confirmed and fatal cases. These findings suggest that firms resort to CSR to reduce the negative consequences of the pandemic. [less ▲]

We generalize Waldschmidt's bound for Leopoldt's defect and prove a similar bound for Gross's defect for an arbitrary extension of number fields. As an application, we prove new cases of the generalized Gross conjecture (also known as the Gross-Kuz'min conjecture) beyond the classical abelian case, and we show that Gross's p-adic regulator has at least half of the conjectured rank. We also describe and compute non-cyclotomic analogues of Gross's defect. [less ▲]

Background: The aim of this paper is to implement a system to facilitate the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) in its initial stages. It does so using a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify images captured with swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Methods: SS-OCT images from 48 control subjects and 48 recently diagnosed MS patients have been used. These images show the thicknesses (45 × 60 points) of the following structures: complete retina, retinal nerve fiber layer, two ganglion cell layers (GCL+, GCL++) and choroid. The Cohen distance is used to identify the structures and the regions within them with greatest discriminant capacity. The original database of OCT images is augmented by a deep convolutional generative adversarial network to expand the CNN’s training set. Results: The retinal structures with greatest discriminant capacity are the GCL++ (44.99% of image points), complete retina (26.71%) and GCL+ (22.93%). Thresholding these images and using them as inputs to a CNN comprising two convolution modules and one classification module obtains sensitivity = specificity = 1.0. Conclusions: Feature pre-selection and the use of a convolutional neural network may be a promising, nonharmful, low-cost, easy-to-perform and effective means of assisting the early diagnosis of MS based on SS-OCT thickness data [less ▲]

Semantic segmentation of point clouds is indispensable for 3D scene understanding. Point clouds have credibility for capturing geometry of objects including shape, size, and orientation. Deep learning (DL) has been recognized as the most successful approach for image semantic segmentation. Applied to point clouds, performance of the many DL algorithms degrades, because point clouds are often sparse and have irregular data format. As a result, point clouds are regularly first transformed into voxel grids or image collections. PointNet was the first promising algorithm that feeds point clouds directly into the DL architecture. Although PointNet achieved remarkable performance on indoor point clouds, its performance has not been extensively studied in large-scale outdoor point clouds. So far, we know, no study on large-scale aerial point clouds investigates the sensitivity of the hyper-parameters used in the PointNet. This paper evaluates PointNet’s performance for semantic segmentation through three large-scale Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) point clouds of urban environments. Reported results show that PointNet has potential in large-scale outdoor scene semantic segmentation. A remarkable limitation of PointNet is that it does not consider local structure induced by the metric space made by its local neighbors. Experiments exhibit PointNet is expressively sensitive to the hyper-parameters like batch-size, block partition and the number of points in a block. For an ALS dataset, we get significant difference between overall accuracies of 67.5% and 72.8%, for the block sizes of 5m×5m and 10m×10m, respectively. Results also discover that the performance of PointNet depends on the selection of input vectors. [less ▲]

The reconstruction of genomes is a critical step in genome-resolved metagenomics as well as for multi-omic data integration from microbial communities. Here, we present binny, a binning tool that produces high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes from both contiguous and highly fragmented genomes. Based on established metrics, binny outperforms existing state-of-the-art binning methods and finds unique genomes that could not be detected by other methods.binny uses k-mer-composition and coverage by metagenomic reads for iterative, non-linear dimension reduction of genomic signatures as well as subsequent automated contig clustering with cluster assessment using lineage-specific marker gene sets.When compared to five widely used binning algorithms, binny recovers the most near-complete (\>95 pure, \>90 complete) and high-quality (\>90 pure, \>70 complete) genomes from simulated data sets from the Critical Assessment of Metagenome Interpretation (CAMI) initiative, as well as from a real-world benchmark comprised of metagenomes from various environments. binny is implemented as Snakemake workflow and available from https://github.com/a-h-b/binny.Competing Interest StatementThe authors have declared no competing interest. Responsive functional composite fibre mats that are mechanically stable and impervious to water exposure are produced by coaxial electrospinning of thermotropic liquid crystal (LC) core inside a water-based solution of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) forming the sheath. Because thermotropic LCs usually cannot be spun inside water-based solutions due to excessive interfacial tension γ, a n enabling step is the addition of ethanol or dioxane to the LC as a co-solvent compatible with both core and sheath fluids. This reduces γ sufficiently that coaxial jet spinning is possible. After spinning, thermal cross-linking of the PVA+PAA sheath yields LC-functionalised fibres that can be manipulated by hand and remain intact even upon full immersion in water. The LC core retains its behaviour, nematics showing well-aligned birefringence and transitioning to isotropic upon heating above the clearing point, and cholesterics showing selective reflection which is even enhanced upon water immersion due to the removal of sheath scattering. Our results pave the way to producing LC-functionalised responsive fibre mats using durable polymer sheaths, thereby enabling numerous innovative applications in wearable technology, and they also open new opportunities to study LCs in confinement, without visible impact of the container walls.
