Recent progress in quantum computing has increased interest in the question of how well the existing proposals for post-quantum cryptosystems are suited to replace RSA and ECC. While some aspects of this question have already been researched in detail (e.g. the relative computational cost of pre- and post-quantum algorithms), very little is known about the RAM footprint of the proposals and what execution time they can reach when low memory consumption rather than speed is the main optimization goal. This question is particularly important in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) since many IoT devices are extremely constrained and possess only a few kB of RAM. We aim to contribute to answering this question by exploring the software design space of the lattice-based key-encapsulation scheme ThreeBears on an 8-bit AVR microcontroller. More concretely, we provide new techniques for the optimization of the ring arithmetic of ThreeBears (which is, in essence, a 3120-bit modular multiplication) to achieve either high speed or low RAM footprint, and we analyze in detail the trade-offs between these two metrics. A low-memory implementation of BabyBear that is secure against Chosen Plaintext Attacks (CPA) needs just about 1.7 kB RAM, which is significantly below the RAM footprint of other lattice-based cryptosystems reported in the literature. Yet, the encapsulation time of this RAM-optimized BabyBear version is below 12.5 million cycles, which is less than the execution time of scalar multiplication on Curve25519. The decapsulation is more than four times faster and takes roughly 3.4 million cycles on an ATmega1284 microcontroller. [less ▲]

In the bioinformatics field, there has been a growing interest in modeling dihedral angles of amino acids by viewing them as data on the torus. This has motivated, over the past years, new proposals of distributions on the torus. The main drawback of most of these models is that the related densities are (pointwise) symmetric, despite the fact that the data usually present asymmetric patterns. This motivates the need to find a new way of constructing asymmetric toroidal distributions starting from a symmetric distribution. We tackle this problem in this article by introducing the sine-skewed toroidal distributions. The general properties of the new models are derived. Based on the initial symmetric model, explicit expressions for the shape and dependence measures are obtained, a simple algorithm for generating random numbers is provided, and asymptotic results for the maximum likelihood estimators are established. An important feature of our construction is that no extra normalizing constant needs to be calculated, leading to more flexible distributions without increasing the complexity of the models. The benefit of employing these new sine-skewed toroidal distributions is shown on the basis of protein data, where, in general, the new models outperform their symmetric antecedents. [less ▲]

Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) execution engines like Intel’s Advanced Vector Extensions 2 (AVX2) offer a great potential to accelerate elliptic curve cryptography compared to implementations using only basic x64 instructions. All existing AVX2 implementations of scalar multiplication on e.g. Curve25519 (and alternative curves) are optimized for low latency. We argue in this paper that many real-world applications, such as server-side SSL/TLS handshake processing, would benefit more from throughput-optimized implementations than latency-optimized ones. To support this argument, we introduce a throughput-optimized AVX2 implementation of variable-base scalar multiplication on Curve25519 and fixed-base scalar multiplication on Ed25519. Both implementations perform four scalar multiplications in parallel, where each uses a 64-bit element of a 256-bit vector. The field arithmetic is based on a radix-2^29 representation of the field elements, which makes it possible to carry out four parallel multiplications modulo a multiple of p=2^255−19 in just 88 cycles on a Skylake CPU. Four variable-base scalar multiplications on Curve25519 require less than 250,000 Skylake cycles, which translates to a throughput of 32,318 scalar multiplications per second at a clock frequency of 2 GHz. For comparison, the to-date best latency-optimized AVX2 implementation has a throughput of some 21,000 scalar multiplications per second on the same Skylake CPU. [less ▲]

Caroline Lichuma and Florence Shako posit that the goal of any modern insolvency regime is to salvage financially viable companies or to provide individuals in financial distress with breathing room without or before subjecting them to the liquidation or bankruptcy processes. The application of the Insolvency Act 2015 and the accompanying Insolvency Regulations of 2016, they note, is bound to have a more than positive change in the Kenyan insolvency regime. In that context, the rescue procedures should be adequately utilized in order to ensure a lasting change in the administration of the insolvency regime in Kenya. It is hoped that there will be no need to be ‘rescued from rescue’ procedures as a result of misuse or abuse of these mechanisms. They convey optimistsm that under the aegis of this fortified rescue culture, many deserving debtors in Kenya, especially companies worth saving, will live on to trade and enrich the country. Solving problems that are perceptually dissimilar but require similar solutions is a key skill in everyday life. In adults, this ability, termed analogical transfer, draws on memories of relevant past experiences that partially overlap with the present task at hand. Thanks to this support from long-term memory, analogical transfer allows remarkable behavioral flexibility beyond immediate situations. However, little is known about the interaction between long-term memory and analogical transfer in development as, to date, they have been studied separately. Here, for the first time, effects of age and memory on analogical transfer were investigated in 2-to-4.5-olds in a simple tool-use setup. Children attempted to solve a puzzle box after training the correct solution on a different looking box, either right before the test or 24 hours earlier. We found that children (N = 105) could transfer the solution regardless of the delay and a perceptual conflict introduced in the tool set. For children who failed to transfer (N = 54) and repeated the test without a perceptual conflict, the odds of success did not improve. Our findings suggest that training promoted the detection of functional similarities between boxes and, thereby, flexible transfer both in the short and the long term. [less ▲]

Using the Panel of Social Inequalities in Catalonia, Spain (PaD 2001–2012), this article investigates the relationship between perceptions of economic conditions and subjective well-being in times of prosperity and economic crisis. It also analyses how this relation- ship plays out across different social backgrounds. Periods of economic crisis and prosper- ity serve as a proxy for objective macroeconomic conditions. The Spanish region of Cata- lonia is a relevant setting because it faced one of the highest increases in inequality and unemployment in Europe as a result of the 2008 Economic Crisis. Our results show that perceived economic conditions matter beyond objective micro and macroeconomic realm and become a strong determinant of subjective well-being during a crisis, particularly for the middle class. However, contrary to our initial expectations, our results also show the existence of a close correlation between perceptions of economic conditions and subjective well-being for low social background individuals in times of economic prosperity, and an even stronger relationship in times of economic crisis. The article stipulates several poten- tial explanations for these results. [less ▲]

It is still debated whether suppressing the retrieval of unwanted memories causes forgetting and whether this constitutes a beneficial mechanism. To shed light on these 2 questions, we scrutinize the evidence for such suppression-induced forgetting (SIF) and examine whether it is deficient in psychological disorders characterized by intrusive thoughts. Specifically, we performed a focused meta-analysis of studies that have used the think/no-think procedure to test SIF in individuals either affected by psychological disorders or exhibiting high scores on related traits. Overall, across 96 effects from 25 studies, we found that avoiding retrieval leads to significant forgetting in healthy individuals, with a small to moderate effect size (0.28, 95% CI [0.14, 0.43]). Importantly, this effect was indeed larger than for more anxious (−0.21, 95% CI [−0.41, −0.02]) or depressed individuals (0.05, 95% CI [−0.19, 0.29])—though estimates for the healthy may be inflated by publication bias. In contrast, individuals with a stronger repressive coping style showed greater SIF (0.42, 95% CI [0.32, 0.52]). Furthermore, moderator analyses revealed that SIF varied with the exact suppression mechanism that participants were instructed to engage. For healthy individuals, the effect sizes were considerably larger when instructions induced specific mechanisms of direct retrieval suppression or thought substitution than when they were unspecific. These results suggest that intact suppression-induced forgetting is a hallmark of psychological well-being, and that inducing more specific suppression mechanisms fosters voluntary forgetting. Fractures of the anterior pelvic ring reduce patients` mobility and independence and increase mortality. Pelvic instability impairs the load transfer to the lower extremity. Restoring stability has therefore been a crucial point of research. Most of the reported studies refer to loading on one leg stand without consideration of physiological muscle and contact-joint forces of the common vital daily movements. Our present study considers physiological gait loading of all acting muscles and Hip Joint Contact (HJC) forces of the pelvis. Those muscles and HJC forces were calculated by inverse dynamics for normal gait motion data and applied in Finite Element Analyses (FEA). The biomechanical stability provided to the anterior pelvic ring by two reconstructive techniques was investigated numerically: the iliopubic Subcutaneous Plate (SP) and the Supra-Acetabular External Fixator (SAFE). Numerical biomechanical assessment of two reconstructive devices for pubic ramus fracture. All muscles and HJC forces of normal gait were calculated by means of inverse dynamics software for a healthy patient considering a musculoskeletal model previously validated experimentally. The Finite Element (FE) model was developed for a pelvis with and without superior and/or inferior rami fractures. Furthermore, two FE models for SP and SAFE mounted on the rami fractured pelvis were designed considering fixation bearing at the lumbosacral joint. The calculated forces were implemented on the FE models following the anatomical orientation and attachments/insertions of each muscle. During the two moments of the gait with higher stresses: Left Heel Strike (LHS) and Right Toe-Off (RTO), strains and displacements were recorded and investigated at the fracture location in addition to the implant fixation points. Considering only right superior ramus fracture during LHS and RTO, recorded strains and displacements for both implants showed similar results. However, during RTO, the SAFE showed a slight reduction of strains at the posterior location by 6% compared to SP. When including both superior and inferior right ramus fractures, both devices did not show considerable difference in recorded strains. However, there were significant differences in the displacements between fracture extremities. The SP technique reduced these motions for both LHS and RTO by 40% compared to the gold standard SAFE technique. In cases of superior ramus fracture only, displacements for both reconstructive devices were similar due to the remaining stability provided by the intact inferior ramus. Both devices reduced stresses of the sacrum wing in LHS and RTO with slightly better results for SAFE. In case of superior and inferior pubic ramus fractures, the SP technique reduced the frontal opening of the fractured right pubic bone. The SAFE did not provide any improvements compared to the SP technique. [less ▲]

The Single Frequency Networks (SFN) are widely used in Digital Television transmission networks due to the high spectral efficiency achieved by them. Digital modulation techniques with a cyclic prefix, like OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) are adequate to define and use SFN networks due to their ability to deal with the artificial multipath produced in a SFN network. Nevertheless, the ATSC 1.0 and ATSC M/H standards use the VSB-8 modulation technique, which has no cyclic prefix, so it is very sensitive to multipath. The ATSC 1.0 standard has been recently implemented in Mexico, so the ATSC M/H standard can be used in the next years because it is compatible with ATSC 1.0, meanwhile ATSC 3.0, the newest standard of ATSC, it is not compatible.The performance of the reception with VSB-8 modulation depends strongly on the receiver channel equalizer. For this reason, the objective of this study is to analyze the performance of ATSC M/H commercial receivers in SFN networks. The results of this study will help in the implementation of SFN networks in Mexico and other countries that use ATSC 1.0 and ATSC M/H. [less ▲]
