[more ▼] This dissertation consists of two parts. In the first part, the focus lies on the study of trade and transport networks in the Gaulish and German provinces during the Roman Empire based on inscriptions. Different approaches are used to tackle this topic, e.g. networks between different people and families, organisations and cities. The results show that networks between merchants or merchant families likely existed with the aim of securing and improving one’s own position in the business world. The networks between organisations show the close connection of these organisations among themselves and to the social and political elite. The spatial networks emphasize the important role of Lyon and show long-range connections of the merchants. The second part focuses on the reconstruction of the roman road between upper Saône and Moselle with the help of ancient, medieval and modern sources as well as digital methods like least cost path analysis. The results show that the road between Corre, Escles and Portieux is the most likely candidate, but it is also possible that other options existed. The dissertation is also part of the Doctoral Doctoral Training Unit ‚Digital History & Hermeneutics‘. One of the basic ideas of the DTU was a critical reflection on the epistemological and methodological challenges of doing historical research in the digital age and a critical and self-reflexive use of these new digital tools and technologies. Especially during the first part of the study, it became evident, that the fragmented nature of the sources leads to several problems when using the new digital methods and tools. This applies even more to Ancient History. The dealing with these problems became another important aspect of the dissertation. There is no point in denying the chances the digital turn and that it will change today’s academia landscape. They can be useful in historic research, but at the same time, they are still a journey into the unknown. It is of the utmost importance to keep a critical mindset towards the new developments, methods and tools. Detailed knowledge of the sources and especially their shortcomings is key. This also applies to their communication and to the documentation of the research process since digital methods can quickly produce impressive-looking results. Furthermore, not only methodological knowledge is required but, especially and probably even more importantly, methodological awareness. [more ▼] The Missing Entrepreneurs 2021 is the sixth edition in a series of biennial reports that examine how public policies at national, regional and local levels can support job creation, economic growth and social inclusion by overcoming obstacles to business start-ups and self-employment by people from disadvantaged or under-represented groups in entrepreneurship. It shows that there are substantial untapped opportunities for entrepreneurship in populations such as women, youth, the unemployed, and immigrants and highlights the need for more differentiated government entrepreneurship policies that respond to the specific barriers they face. The report includes an assessment of the impact of COVID-19 across these populations of entrepreneurs and the effectiveness of the policy response. It also contains thematic policy chapters on microfinance and leveraging the potential of immigrant entrepreneurs. These chapters present the range of current policy actions in EU and OECD countries and make recommendations for future policy directions. Finally, the report contains country profiles for each of the 27 EU Member States that identify for each county the major recent trends in entrepreneurship by women, youth, seniors and immigrants, the key policy issues and the recent policy actions. See section on Luxembourg country profile. [more ▼] Active Labour Market Policies (ALMPs) are the subject of ongoing interest, which has included the framing of ALMPs as the re-commodification of labour. It has also been argued that Sen’s Capability Approach (CA) offers the potential to reconsider ALMPs from a more progressive viewpoint – so, is this the case and to what extent is, or can, the CA be a helpful research and analytical tool with which to study ALMPs? These questions are addressed through a reflexive examination of a study of Danish ALMPs, which utilized the CA and key themes of capabilities promotion, voice and choice. The CA influenced all aspects of the research design, methods and analysis. It is argued that the CA is a helpful methodology in bringing a new perspective to studying ALMPs. Additionally, the study raised concerns about the trajectory of the Danish ALMPs studied and possible alternatives to current approaches. [more ▼] The research field between Artificial Intelligence and Health sciences has established itself as a central research direction in recent years and has also further increased social interest. On the one hand, this is due to the emergence of medical mass data and their use for AI-related fields, such as machine learning, human-computer interfaces and natural language-processing systems, and on the other hand, it is also due to the steadily growing social interest, which is not determined by the current Covid 19 pandemic. To this end, the lecture series is intended to provide an opportunity for scientific exchange.
