[more ▼] This paper is related to my current book project which explores the history and genealogies of digital history, set within the broader context of the ways in which technology has shaped historical research practices and knowledge production since the late 19th century. My paper focuses on a key aspect, the circulation of technological knowledge and expertise among transnational networks of historians, archivists, and librarians, the ways in which these networks were constituted and their transformative influence on historical knowledge production. This transnational circulation of knowledge dates to the late 19 th century when archival and library photography began to affect historical research practices. It became especially salient in the postWWII period when historians begin to use analog and later digital computing in the United States, Western Europe and the Eastern bloc led by the Soviet Union, against the backdrop of the Cold War and a general surge in the use of computing in various humanities disciplines. By the late 1960s we begin to see the establishment of networks and structures to support what could be called an emerging transnational field of computing historians; the International Congress of Historical Sciences in Moscow (1970) and the international History and the Computer conference in Uppsala (1973) would become key platforms for knowledge exchange. These developments ran parallel to the emergence of computing in libraries and archives around 1970 which gave rise to similar networks. The years leading up to and following 1970 can thus be seen as a key period that saw the formation of transnational communicative spaces and networks of computing historians, librarians and archivists. After the advent of micro- and personal computing since the early 1980s, new user generations of computing historians formed the international Association for History and Computing (1987). The aim of the paper is to show how the transnational circulation and diffusion of knowledge within the aforementioned spaces and networks is key to understanding technology’s transformative impacts on historical knowledge production in the 20 th century. It is also indispensible to understand the emergence of the field of digital history around the 2000s. [more ▼] The military offensive launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine in the early hours of 24 February 2022 and the ensuing war on Ukrainian territory have resulted in immense human suffering, a humanitarian tragedy and incalculable material damage. The violation of a country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty – an act in clear breach of the United Nations Charter – has shattered the shared framework of values and principles fostered by multilateralism after the Second World War in the hope of achieving world peace, while leading to an unprecedented outpouring of solidarity for Ukraine and the plight of its people from Western democracies and European and international organisations, including NATO, the UN, the European Union and the Council of Europe, and their Member States and private initiatives. As contemporary history is turned on its head, historians, driven by the duty of memory, are stepping up to explain the origins of the conflict, identify the various players, provide an objective analysis of the consequences, record the memories of eyewitnesses and victims – with oral history proving a precious tool –, preserve historical sources and, above all, reflect on the role that intellectual effort can play in paving the way for a return to peace in the new world order taking shape before our eyes. [more ▼] Space missions to Near Rectilinear Halo Orbits (NRHOs) in the Earth-Moon system are upcoming. A rendezvous technique in cislunar space is proposed in this investigation, one that leverages coupled orbit and attitude dynamics in the Circular Restricted Three-body Problem (CR3BP). An autonomous Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) technique is demonstrated in which a chaser spacecraft approaches a target spacecraft in a sample southern 9:2 synodic-resonant L2 NRHO, one that currently serves as the baseline for NASA's Gateway. A two-layer guidance and control approach is contemplated. First, a nonlinear optimal controller identifies an appropriate baseline rendezvous path for guidance, both in position and orientation. As the spacecraft progresses along the pre-computed baseline path, navigation is performed through optical sensors that measure the relative pose of the chaser relative to the target. A Kalman filter processes these observations and offers state estimates. A linear controller compensates for any deviations identified from the predetermined rendezvous path. The efficacy of the GNC technique is tested by considering a complex scenario in which the rendezvous operation is conducted with an uncontrolled tumbling target. Hardware-in-the-loop laboratory experiments are conducted as a proof-of-concept to validate the guidance algorithm, with observations supplemented by optical navigation techniques. With the recent advances in generative modeling, new deepfake detection methods have been proposed. Nevertheless, they mostly formulate this topic as a binary classification problem, resulting in poor explainability capabilities. Indeed, a forged image might be induced by multi-step manipulations with different properties. For a better interpretability of the results, recognizing the nature of these stacked manipulations is highly relevant. For that reason, we propose to model deepfake detection as a multi-label classification task, where each label corresponds to a specific kind of manipulation. In this context, state-of-the-art multi-label image classification methods are considered. Extensive experiments are performed to assess the practical use case of deepfake detection. [more ▼] This work investigates the joint effects of jet engine exhaust-induced turbulence and atmospheric turbulence on the propagation of a partially coherent Gaussian Schell-model Array (GSMA) vortex beam. Using the two-process propagation method, analytical formulae are derived for the cross-spectral density, spectral density, degree of coherence, and beam width of the considered beam. The results show that the considered beam takes different shapes; when the spatial coherence is large, the spectral density of the GSMA vortex beam takes an elliptical shape, whereas when the spatial coherence is smaller, the spectral density remains a Gaussian shape. The evolution profile of the degree of coherence weakens gradually when the propagation distance, topological charge, and turbulence strength increase. Moreover, the profile of the degree of coherence takes the Gaussian profile when the propagation distance is longer or turbulence atmospheric is stronger. Furthermore, the results reveal that the corresponding beam spreads faster with a larger propagation distance, lower spatial coherence, and high-strength turbulence. This study also concludes from the results that the beam is affected more when its propagation is near the jet engine exhaust, which means that this latter has a significant impact. In a research environment that increasingly privileges what is available online, the questions of why, where, and how we can access what we can access, and how it affects historical research have become ever more urgent. My talk will outline a framework through which to contextualize the politics of (digital) heritage preservation, and a model to analyze its most important political dimensions. To add some historical perspective, I will put this discussion in the broader context of the ways in which technology has shaped historical research practices and knowledge production, not just in the past two decades but in fact already since the late 19th century. Circular reinforced composite dowel (CRCD) connectors are known for their high initial stiffness and significant load-bearing capacity. This paper presents the different types of CRCD connectors and the available analytical equations to determine their shear resistance, as well as a database of 52 experimental specimens to study their performance. The results show that the equations developed by Wang et al.2014, He et al.2016and Zhao et al.2016 provided the best performance, with 76% of the predictions falling within the error bounds of +/-15%. Further research is recommended to understand the behavior of CRCD connectors on H-shaped steel profiles and to develop analytical equations to calculate their resistance. Cyberattacks and resulting data breaches frequently have their root cause in enterprises' IAM systems. During the COVID-19 pandemic, issues with the remote authentication of employees working from home highlighted the need for better IAM solutions. Using a design science research approach, the paper reviews the requirements for IAM systems from an enterprise perspective and identifies the potential benefits of self-sovereign identity (SSI) – an emerging, passwordless paradigm in identity management that provides end users with cryptographic attestations stored in digital wallet apps. To do so, this paper first conducts a systematic literature review followed by an interview study and categorizes IAM system requirements according to security and compliance, operability, technology, and user aspects. In a second step, it presents an SSI-based prototype for IAM, whose suitability for addressing IAM challenges was assessed by twelve domain experts. The results suggest that the SSI-based authentication of employees can address requirements in each of the four IAM requirement categories. SSI can specifically improve manageability and usability aspects and help implement acknowledged best practices such as the principle of least privilege. Nonetheless, the findings also reveal that SSI is not a silver bullet for all of the challenges that today’s complex IAM systems face. [more ▼] Bacterial dispersal, the movement of cells spanning diverse physical scales and environments, has been long investigated owing to its far-reaching ramifications in the ecology and evolution of bacterial species and their consortia. A major proportion of bacterial species are surface associated, yet if and how they disperse, specifically during the early stages of biofilm formation, remains to be understood. While physical vectors like fluid flow drive dispersal across large scales, surface-associated cells may benefit from the active biomechanical forces to navigate locally within a colony. Here, by analyzing sessile bacterial colonies, we study how cells disperse over generations due to the growth-induced forces under different conditions. A custom-built label-free algorithm, developed to track the progeny cells as they grow and divide, reveals the emergence of distinct self-similar genealogical enclaves which intermix over time. Biological activity, indicated by the division times, is a key determinant of the intermixing dynamics; while topological defects appearing at the interface of the enclaves mediate the morphology of finger-like interfacial domains. By quantifying the Shannon entropy, we show that dividing bacterial cells have spatial affinity to close relatives, at the cost of the entropically favourable option of intermixing, wherein faster growing colonies show higher drop in the Shannon entropy over time. A coarse-grained lattice modelling of such colonies, combined with insights from the thermodynamics of phase separation, suggest that the emergence of genealogical enclaves results from an interplay of growth-induced cell dispersal within the colony (which promotes intermixing) and stochasticity of cell division, alongwith the cell-cell interactions at a given growth condition. Our study uncovers the evolution of so-far hidden emergent self-organising features within growing bacterial colonies, which while displaying a high degree of self-similarity on a range of phenotypic traits, point at competing roles of growth-induced forces and entropic landscapes which ultimately shape the genealogical distance of cells to their kith and kin within growing colonies. [more ▼] Teacher-student relationships (TSRs) play a vital role in establishing a positive school climate and promoting positive student outcomes. Several meta-analyses have suggested significant associations between TSRs and, for example, academic achievement, a lack of disruptive behavior, school engagement, peer relationships, motivation, executive functions, and general well-being. However, these meta-analyses have differed substantially in TSR-outcome relationships, moderators, and quality, thus complicating the interpretation of these findings. In this preregistered systematic review of meta-analyses plus original second-order meta-analyses (SOMAs), we aimed to (a) synthesize the meta-analytic evidence on relationships between TSRs and student outcomes, (b) map influential moderators of these relationships, and (c) assess the methodological quality of the meta-analyses. We synthesized over 70 years of educational research in 24 meta-analyses encompassing a total of 116 effect sizes based on more than 2 million prekindergarten and K-12 students. We conducted several three-level SOMAs and found that TSRs had similar strong significant relationships with eight clusters of outcomes: academic achievement, academic emotions, appropriate student behavior, behavior problems, executive functions and self-control, motivation, school belonging and engagement, and student well-being. Age, gender, and informant (student-, peer-, or teacher-assessments) were the most frequently examined moderators in prior research, and our moderator analyses suggested student grade level and social minority status as moderators. We further found large differences in quality between the meta-analyses, and these differences were not associated with the TSR-outcome relationships. These results map the field of TSR research; present their relationships, moderators, and meta-analytic quality; and show how TSRs can contribute to improving outcomes in students via relationship building. Future research should follow meta-analytic open science procedures to improve quality and reproducibility. [more ▼] Most current software systems involve processing personal data, an activity that is regulated in Europe by the general data protection regulation (GDPR) through data processing agreements (DPAs). Developing compliant software requires adhering to DPA-related requirements in GDPR. Verifying the compliance of DPAs entirely manually is however time-consuming and error-prone. In this paper, we propose an automation strategy based on machine learning (ML) for checking GDPR compliance in DPAs. Specifically, we create, based on existing work, a comprehensive conceptual model that describes the information types pertinent to DPA compliance. We then develop an automated approach that detects breaches of compliance by predicting the presence of these information types in DPAs. On an evaluation set of 30 real DPAs, our approach detects 483 out of 582 genuine violations while introducing 93 false violations, achieving thereby a precision of 83.9% and recall of 83.0%. We empirically compare our approach against an existing approach which does not employ ML but relies on manually-defined rules. Our results indicate that the two approaches perform on par. Therefore, to select the right solution in a given context, we discuss differentiating factors like the availability of annotated data and legal experts, and adaptation to regulation changes.
