Fast nonadiabatic control protocols known as shortcuts to adiabaticity have found a plethora of applications, but their use has been severely limited to speeding up the dynamics of isolated quantum systems. We introduce shortcuts for open quantum processes that make possible the fast control of Gaussian states in nonunitary processes. Specifically, we provide the time modulation of the trap frequency and dephasing strength that allow preparing an arbitrary thermal state in a finite time. Experimental implementation can be done via stochastic parametric driving or continuous measurements, readily accessible in a variety of platforms. [less ▲]

Comparison of the Energy-Transfer Rates in Structural and Spectral Variants of the B800–850 Complex from Purple Bacteria

Photosynthetic light harvesting can occur with a remarkable near-unity quantum efficiency. The B800–850 complex, also known as light-harvesting complex 2 (LH2), is the primary light-harvesting complex in purple bacteria and has been extensively studied as a model system. The bacteriochlorophylls of the B800–850 complex are organized into two concentric rings, known as the B800 and B850 rings. However, depending on the species and growth conditions, the number of constituent subunits, the pigment geometry, and the absorption energies vary. While the dynamics of some B800–850 variants have been exhaustively characterized, others have not been measured. Furthermore, a direct and simultaneous comparison of how both structural and spectral differences between variants affect these dynamics has not been performed. In this work, we utilize ultrafast transient absorption measurements to compare the B800 to B850 energy-transfer rates in the B800–850 complex as a function of the number of subunits, geometry, and absorption energies. The nonameric B800–850 complex from Rhodobacter (Rb.) sphaeroides is 40% faster than the octameric B800–850 complex from Rhodospirillum (Rs.) molischianum, consistent with structure-based predictions. In contrast, the blue-shifted B800–820 complex from Rs. molischianum is only 20% faster than the B800–850 complex from Rs. molischianum despite an increase in the spectral overlap between the rings that would be expected to produce a larger increase in the energy-transfer rate. These measurements support current models that contain dark, higher-lying excitonic states to bridge the energy gap between rings, thereby maintaining similar energy-transfer dynamics. Overall, these results demonstrate that energy-transfer dynamics in the B800–850 complex are robust to the spectral and structural variations between species used to optimize energy capture and flow in purple bacteria. Dans sa préface de 1826 au Génie du christianisme dans les Œuvres complètes, Chateaubriand prend le parti de résumer toute sa vie comme un « combat […] contre les hommes qui abusaient du pouvoir pour corrompre ou pour enchaîner les peuples ». Ce combat se donne à lire de manière magistrale à travers ses pamphlets, et particulièrement dans De Buonaparte et des Bourbons (1814), publié quelques jours avant l’abdication de l’Empereur. Pleinement en prise avec son temps et les questionnements qui lui sont propres dans ce pamphlet qui marque, de son propre aveu, son entrée en politique, Chateaubriand n’en doit pas moins justifier son ingérence, en tant qu’homme de lettres, dans les affaires publiques. C’est à cette fin qu’il met en place une scénographie auctoriale propre à légitimer sa position nouvelle, et impliquant notamment un réinvestissement de l’Histoire mené selon des procédés discursifs singuliers, indices d’un rapport à la temporalité caractéristique d’un auteur qui, plus que tout autre, fut son temps. Quelles sont les modalités esthétiques et poétiques de la scénographie ainsi mise en place ? Comment Chateaubriand instrumentalise-t-il l’Histoire pour appuyer son propos politique, et de quelle façon cela se traduit-il sur le plan esthétique ? Quel est, enfin, l’ethos qui émane du pamphlet ? C’est ce que nous nous appliquerons à déterminer au départ de De Buonaparte et des Bourbons, que l’on comparera à De l’État de la France au mois de mars et au mois d’octobre 1814, pamphlet publié anonymement par Chateaubriand, afin d’attester la continuité et l’originalité des modalités de la posture auctoriale, résolument moderne, du Chateaubriand pamphlétaire. Nous examinerons enfin la réception de la scénographie auctoriale propre au pamphlet au regard de deux écrits parus en réponse à De Buonaparte et des Bourbons, à savoir la Réponse à l’ouvrage de M. de Chateaubriand intitulé « De Buonaparte et des Bourbons » (1814) de Philippe Lesbroussart-Dewaele et les Rêveries de M. de Chateaubriant, ou Examen critique d'un libelle intitulé : « De Buonaparte et des Bourbons » (1815), de Charles-Joseph Bail – écrits révélateurs, par leur publication même, de la résonance, dans le discours politique du temps, du pamphlet et de la figure auctoriale qu’il convoque. Schon im Jahre 2004 führte Claudine Moulin aus: „Unter vielen Gesichtspunkten kann man heute behaupten, dass es nicht übertrieben ist, von einem eigenständigen Fach, der luxemburgischen Philologie, zu reden.“ Um die Genese dieser wissenschaftlichen Disziplin, um ihr Forschungsfeld, ihre Akteure und Institutionen in ihren jeweiligen gesellschafts- und wissenschaftshistorischen Einbettungen soll es im Folgenden gehen. Zunächst soll ein komprimierter Abriss über den Wandel der Existenzform des Luxemburgischen aus einem moselfränkischen Dialekt hin zu einer germanischen Einzel- und Nationalsprache gegeben werden. Danach folgt eine erste wissenschaftshistorische Darstellung der Beschäftigung mit dem Luxemburgischen als Studienobjekt einer Sprachwissenschaft. Beginnend im 19. Jh., lassen sich hier m.E. drei wissenschaftshistorische Phasen annehmen, die sich in Zielsetzung, Professionalisierung und Institutionalisierung unterscheiden und immer in Relation zur linguistischen und soziolinguistischen Entwicklung der Varietät ‚Luxemburgisch‘ betrachtet werden müssen. Abschließend sollen diese wissenschaftshistorischen Etappen in Bezug auf das Konzept einer Nationalphilologie diskutiert werden. Die folgende Darstellung fokussiert fast ausschließlich auf die Sprachwissenschaft. Diese müsste selbstverständlich um eine analoge Untersuchung zur Literaturwissenschaft ergänzt werden. [less ▲]

Fiscal integration is recognized as an important issue in determining whether countries establish a common currency area. Fiscal integration between sovereign states is, however, limited by the ability of countries to commit to fiscal transfers. This paper supposes that fiscal transfers between countries must be voluntary and asks how this influences the choice between a currency area and a flexible exchange rate regime. It presents a model with wage rigidity in which, absent transfers, the flexible exchange rate regime is preferred. If there are transfers that equalize consumption, then the choice of exchange rate regime is irrelevant. Nevertheless, the currency area may be preferable if transfers are made voluntarily, because the currency area can sustain greater risk sharing. It is shown that the currency area can be optimal for a plausible set of parameter values. We consider the robustness of the conclusions to some modifications of the model. [less ▲]
