[more ▼] In architectural history, just as in global politics, refugees have tended to exist as mere human surplus; histories of architecture, then, have usually reproduced the nation-state’s exclusion of refugees as people out of place. Andrew Herscher’s Displacements: Architecture and Refugee, the ninth book in the Critical Spatial Practice series, examines some of the usually disavowed but arguably decisive intersections of mass-population displacement and architecture—an art and technology of population placement—through the twentieth century and into the present. Posing the refugee as the preeminent collective political subject of our time, Displacements attempts to open up an architectural history of the refugee that could refract on the history of architecture and the history of the refugee alike. Andrew Herscher is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan with appointments in the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, and Department of Art History. His publications include Violence Taking Place: The Architecture of the Kosovo Conflict (Stanford University Press, 2010), The Unreal Estate Guide to Detroit (University of Michigan Press, 2012), and, coedited with Anooradha Iyer Siddiqi, Spatial Violence (Routledge, 2016). [more ▼] Modern Directional Statistics collects important advances in methodology and theory for directional statistics over the last two decades. It provides a detailed overview and analysis of recent results that can help both researchers and practitioners. Knowledge of multivariate statistics eases the reading but is not mandatory. The field of directional statistics has received a lot of attention over the past two decades, due to new demands from domains such as life sciences or machine learning, to the availability of massive data sets requiring adapted statistical techniques, and to technological advances. This book covers important progresses in distribution theory, high-dimensional statistics, kernel density estimation, efficient inference on directional supports, and computational and graphical methods. [more ▼] Affective forecasting is an ability that allows the prediction of the hedonic outcome of never-before experienced situations, by mentally recombining elements of prior experiences into possible scenarios, and pre-experiencing what these might feel like. It has been hypothesised that this ability is uniquely human. For example, given prior experience with the ingredients, but in the absence of direct experience with the mixture, only humans are said to be able to predict that lemonade tastes better with sugar than without it. Non-human animals, on the other hand, are claimed to be confined to predicting—exclusively and inflexibly—the outcome of previously experienced situations. Relying on gustatory stimuli, we devised a non-verbal method for assessing affective forecasting and tested comparatively one Sumatran orangutan and ten human participants. Administered as binary choices, the test required the participants to mentally construct novel juice blends from familiar ingredients and to make hedonic predictions concerning the ensuing mixes. The orangutan’s performance was within the range of that shown by the humans. Both species made consistent choices that reflected independently measured taste preferences for the stimuli. Statistical models fitted to the data confirmed the predictive accuracy of such a relationship. The orangutan, just like humans, thus seems to have been able to make hedonic predictions concerning never-before experienced events. [more ▼] For almost half a century, theories of aesthetic experience have determined the discourse on aesthetics in Germany. In his discourse analysis, Harry Lehmann shows how this discussion defined its rules of discourse in distinction to Adorno's Aesthetic Theory and in recourse to Kant's Critique of Judgment. The author discusses how the most prominent aesthetics of experience have subsequently differentiated themselves within this given theoretical framework and how this discourse has finally begun to question its own constitutive premises. It is not only problematic that conceptual art, for example, is interpreted aesthetically in this discourse, but that these aesthetics of experience in principle lack the theoretical means to respond to the latest developments in neuroaesthetics and AI aesthetics. Lehmann therefore proposes an alternative model that no longer follows Kant's line of tradition and starts with a conceptual distinction between aesthetic and non-aesthetic phenomena, perceptions or judgments, but is based on a practice of perceptual comparisons whose factual and historical preconditions can be analyzed. [more ▼] The thesis is devoted to research of theoretical foundations, international and domestic trends of environmental taxation from the perspective of its use to reduce the excessive burden of economic activity on environment. It was developed the theoretical approaches to the study of the essence and public purpose of environmental taxation as a method of reducing the excessive burden on the environment. The features of the essential characteristics of environmental taxes were determined and include: the prevailing regulatory function on fiscal one; focus on harmonization of tax and environmental policies, reducing the tax base; providing commercial attractiveness of innovation and development of „clean” technologies; desirability manifestation of substitution effect; the prevailing of the „polluter pays” principle over paying capacity principle; internalization of negative externalities and minimization of excessive tax burden as a condition of optimal environmental taxes; imperative introducing specific rates of indirect taxes and increasing and reducing of the regulatory potential of environmental taxation depends on determined factors. It was deepened conceptual and categorical apparatus of the theory of taxation by clarifying the definition of „environmental taxes system„ as a combination of taxes and duties (mandatory payments) designed for achieving specific, well-defined environmental objectives which create price incentives for taxpayers to reduce the excessive burden on environment, compensation of environmental damage to society, improving energy and resource efficiency, which ultimately ensures the improvement of the ecological situation and welfare of population. Developed analytical research tool was used for evaluation the effectiveness of environmental taxation, the existing theoretical approaches to its development and implementation in the context of the experience of foreign countries. A structural-functional analysis of the environmental tax was conducted, and it was assessed the efficiency of energy taxes, analyzed the effectiveness of taxes on environmental pollution. That proved that, compared with developed countries, environmental taxes insufficiently perform tasks of catalyzing decoupling ties and unrealized potential of environmental energy taxes, transport taxes, taxes on resources and direct taxes on pollution exists in Ukraine. However, implementation of fiscal potential of environmental taxation should occur in interconnection with the level of purchasing power. It was defined the directions of realization of the energy taxes potential, on pollution of environment and the ways of improving information provision of administration of environmental taxes. The conclusion about expediency of introduction of adjustment coefficients tax rates depending on the environmental limits on pollution was made. It was proved the expediency of narrowing the tax base of environmental tax for focusing the regulatory impact of environmental tax on the strategic targets of environmental policy. The introduction of differentiation of excise tax rates on gas oil in Ukraine was proposed, according to environmental standards that operate in Ukraine. The scheme of inter-institutional communication on information provision of environmental taxes administration was created will shape the fiscal authorities, and tax payer’s history to draw conclusions about the completeness fulfillment of tax obligations. [more ▼] Long-range spatial correlations in the velocity and energy fields of a granular fluid are discussed in the framework of a 1d lattice model. The dynamics of the velocity field occurs through nearest-neighbour inelastic collisions that conserve momentum but dissipate energy. A set of equations for the fluctuating hydrodynamics of the velocity and energy mesoscopic fields give a first approximation for (i) the velocity structure factor and (ii) the finite-size correction to the Haff law, both in the homogeneous cooling regime. At a more refined level, we have derived the equations for the two-site velocity correlations and the total energy fluctuations. First, we seek a perturbative solution thereof, in powers of the inverse of system size. On the one hand, when scaled with the granular temperature, the velocity correlations tend to a stationary value in the long time limit. On the other hand, the scaled standard deviation of the total energy diverges, that is, the system shows multiscaling. Second, we find an exact solution for the velocity correlations in terms of the spectrum of eigenvalues of a certain matrix. The results of numerical simulations of the microscopic model confirm our theoretical results, including the above described multiscaling phenomenon. [more ▼] A recently introduced model describing—on a 1d lattice—the velocity field of a granular fluid is discussed in detail. The dynamics of the velocity field occurs through next-neighbours inelastic collisions which conserve momentum but dissipate energy. The dynamics is described through the corresponding Master Equation for the time evolution of the probability distribution. In the continuum limit, equations for the average velocity and temperature fields with fluctuating currents are derived, which are analogous to hydrodynamic equations of granular fluids when restricted to the shear modes. Therefore, the homogeneous cooling state, with its linear instability, and other relevant regimes such as the uniform shear flow and the Couette flow states are described. The evolution in time and space of the single particle probability distribution, in all those regimes, is also discussed, showing that the local equilibrium is not valid in general. The noise for the momentum and energy currents, which are correlated, are white and Gaussian. The same is true for the noise of the energy sink, which is usually negligible [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 27 (0 UL)![]() Glesener, Jeanne ![]() in Malice- le magazine des littératures et des cultures à l'ère numérique (2016) Contemporary migration literature is increasingly heralded as a ‘new world literature’.
