This data article presents the raw data used in the article “Experimental and analytical evaluation of exhaust air heat pumps in ventilation-based heating systems” (in review). The data set contains measurement results of a field monitoring on a residential exhaust air heat pump system (air-to-air heat pump) in Germany. This data could be used to investigate the dynamic behaviour and performance of the exhaust air heat pump systems. The data set contains air temperature and humidity of all four sides of the heat pump unit. Moreover, the electrical consumption of the unit and the dynamic pressure difference on the exhaust side (as indication of the air volume rate) could be also found in the data set. [less ▲]

Vulnerability to adversarial attacks is a well-known weakness of Deep Neural networks. While most of the studies focus on single-task neural networks with computer vision datasets, very little research has considered complex multi-task models that are common in real applications. In this paper, we evaluate the design choices that impact the robustness of multi-task deep learning networks. We provide evidence that blindly adding auxiliary tasks, or weighing the tasks provides a false sense of robustness. Thereby, we tone down the claim made by previous research and study the different factors which may affect robustness. In particular, we show that the choice of the task to incorporate in the loss function are important factors that can be leveraged to yield more robust models. [less ▲]

Due to the significant energy loss in the building sector, energy efficiency of the buildings and their heating systems is gaining interest especially in the last decades. Application of exhaust air heat pumps as an energy efficient heating technology to cover the heating and venting demand of the building is becoming conventional. The exhaust air heat pumps are attracting considerable interest due to their normally reasonable price and small footprint. This heat pump type is often installed as part of an air based heating system together with electrical heaters. These electrical heaters are installed to cover the residual heating demand and/or to insure thermal comfort. The technology of exhaust air heat pumps has been investigated in several studies. Available studies on exhaust air heat pumps have tended mostly to focus on comparison between different technologies utilized in efficient buildings. Almost all of the existing studies have ignored the actual application of this technology in air based heating systems together with electrical heaters. In this sense, there is still a need for discussion on the influence of different buildings’ standards and control strategies on the heating system performance. The present paper aims to call into question the energy efficiency of exhaust air heat pumps under different boundary conditions. In this study, the results of a long time field monitoring are utilized in order to model the dynamic behavior of an exhaust air heat pump in MATLAB/Simulink. The impact of different boundary conditions on the heat pump’s efficiency is studied and additionally compared to previous studies. The developed model is used for annual simulations of air based hybrid heating systems in three different building standards. Finally, the influence of control strategy on the system performance is investigated. It is shown that under certain boundary conditions and control strategy, the studied system could provide an efficient heating system with acceptable user comfort. Nevertheless, applying conventional heating control methods or installing the system in buildings with high heating energy demand could lead to high electrical energy consumption and/or undesirable thermal comfort. This article examines the influence of patients' families in the Schaerbeek asylum for the insane between 1853 and 1914. Through the examination of the institution's medico-administrative registers during four periods of psychiatric internment (admissions, establishment of diagnoses, social relations of the patients, and discharges), the central role played by the patients' entourage in the asylums is revealed. Between high economic capital and favorable legal provisions, families are indeed able to influence the possibilities and modalities of psychiatric internment. However, families' room for manoeuvre is not unlimited. Entries, diagnoses, social relations of patients and discharges are constantly subject to negotiation between the different holders of the asylums' power. Thus, this contribution highlights the way in which the interests of the patients' families clash with those of the asylum's management, the alienist physicians and the public authorities. [less ▲]

Achieving and maintaining high allocations to Private Equity and keeping allocations at the targeted level through recommitment strategies is a complex task which needs to be balanced against the risk of becoming a defaulting investor. When looking at recommitments we are quickly faced with a combinatorial explosion of the solution space, rendering explicit enumeration impossible. As a consequence, manual management if any is becoming time-consuming and error-prone. For this reason, investors need guidance and decision aid algorithms producing reliable, robust and trustworthy recommitment strategies. In this work, we propose to generate automatically recommitment strategies based on the evolution of symbolic expressions to provide clear and understandable decision rules to Private Equity experts and investors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a methodology to learn recommitment strategies using evolutionary learning is proposed. Experiments demonstrate the capacity of the proposed approach to generate efficient and robust strategies, keeping a high degree of investment while bounding the risk of being overinvested. [less ▲]
