The provision of essential supplies is a key service provided by retailers when demand spikes due to consumer stockpiling during environmental emergencies. Moreover, it is important for retailers to quickly recover from these events by replenishing the stock of essential supplies to meet the continuing needs of local residents. The main purpose of this research is to study consumer precautionary stockpiling behavior prior to the onset of hurricane landfalls and determine the impact of this behavior on in-store product availability for various formats of retail store outlets. Specifically, we focus on the bottled water product category, an essential emergency category in hurricane preparedness. This study combines an event analysis methodology with econometric models using archival retail scanner data from 60 U.S. retail chains located in 963 counties and real-time data from four recent U.S. continental hurricanes. We find that supply-side characteristics (retail network and product variety), demand-side characteristics (hurricane experience and household income), and disaster characteristics (hazard proximity and hazard intensity) significantly affect consumer stockpiling propensity as the hurricanes approach. The increased consumer stockpiling has immediate and longer-term impacts on retail operations, namely, in-store product availability. Among various retail formats, drug stores are associated with the highest consumer stockpiling propensity before hurricanes, while dollar stores and discount stores are associated with the lowest in-store product availability following hurricanes. Our study points to the need for retailers and policymakers to carefully monitor factors affecting consumer stockpiling behavior that will allow for better allocation of critical supplies during the hurricane season. This letter considers a wireless powered communication network (WPCN), where an energy-constrained device directly uses harvested energy from a power transfer source to transmit independent signals to multiple Internet of Things (IoT) users using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). Our goal is to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing the duration of energy harvesting (EH), subcarrier and power allocation. The formulated problem is a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem due to the presence of binary assignment variables, and thus it is very challenging to solve it directly. By leveraging Dinkelbach method, a very efficient iterative algorithm with closed-form solutions in each iteration is developed, where its convergence is guaranteed. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm obtains a fast convergence and outperforms baseline algorithms. Notably, they also reveal that the power source should transmit its maximum allowable power to obtain the optimal EE performance. [less ▲]

In many software and systems development projects, analysts specify requirements using a combination of modeling and natural language (NL). In such situations, systematic acceptance testing poses a challenge because defining the acceptance criteria (AC) to be met by the system under test has to account not only for the information in the (requirements) model but also that in the NL requirements. In other words, neither models nor NL requirements per se provide a complete picture of the information content relevant to AC. Our work in this paper is prompted by the observation that a reconciliation of the information content in NL requirements and models is necessary for obtaining precise AC. We perform such reconciliation by devising an approach that automatically extracts AC-related information from NL requirements and helps modelers enrich their model with the extracted information. An existing AC derivation technique is then applied to the model that has now been enriched by the information extracted from NL requirements. Using a real case study from the financial domain, we evaluate the usefulness of the AC-related model enrichments recommended by our approach. Our evaluation results are very promising: Over our case study system, a group of five domain experts found 89% of the recommended enrichments relevant to AC and yet absent from the original model (precision of 89%). Furthermore, the experts could not pinpoint any additional information in the NL requirements which was relevant to AC but which had not already been brought to their attention by our approach (recall of 100%) [less ▲]

Resilience has become an important topic in many social sciences. Numerous individual choices and economic and demographic outcomes are likely to be influenced by people’s resilience. School performance, work absenteeism and burnout, longevity, the quality of sleep and health-risk behaviors such as substance abuse are some examples. Similarly, it is of high policy relevance to understand the determinants of both individual resilience (such as educational, marital and occupational status) and ecological resilience (such as climate change). Empirical work designed to uncover such relationships suffers from the absence of a resilience measure applicable in the context of large data sets. We fill this gap by proposing a specific measure that is characterized by a set of natural properties. After an introduction to the notion of resilience and its attributes, we argue why these conditions have intuitive appeal. Finally, we provide illustrating examples and derive our main characterization result. [less ▲]

Given the growing share of uncertain renewable energy production, the energy transition challenges modern power systems and especially calls for increased flexibility. However, relevant information on the highly assetspecific flexibility potential is typically only known to plant operators themselves and not, e.g., to transmission system operators. Therefore, liberalized electricity markets use prices that set explicit monetary incentives to disclose the relevant private information about the market participants’ assets. In this way, information asymmetries may be reduced. Given the different challenges of an integration of renewables, we argue that the associated new forms of volatile power profiles require new forms of power-trading products. In particular, based on recent advances in technical power measurement and billing, individual and market participant-specific power profiles may be superior to the current trading of average volumes. Against this background, we first outline various evolutionary adjustments of existing power-trading products and their underlying product parameters including (1) strengthening local pricing, (2) finer temporal granularity, (3) smaller minimum volume, and (4) shorter gate-closure time. Second, we open up a new perspective in form of a more disruptive shift towards power-profile trade, where market participants define their trading product using the actual power profile as a new product parameter. Repeated systemic challenge with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) can induce microglia activation and inflammatory neurodegeneration in the substantia nigra pars compacta region of mice. We now explored the role of mononuclear phagocytes associated nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase 2 (NOX‐2) in inflammatory neurodegeneration. Cybb ‐deficient NOX‐2 knock‐out (KO) and control wild type (WT) mice were treated intraperitoneally daily over four consecutive days with 1 μg/gbw/day LPS. Transcriptome analysis by RNA‐seq of total brain tissue indicated increased LPS‐induced upregulation of genes belonging to the reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species production, complement and lysosome activation as well as apoptosis and necroptosis in WT compared to NOX‐2 KO mice. Validation of up‐regulated gene transcripts via qRT‐PCR confirmed that LPS‐challenged NOX‐2 KO mice expressed lower levels of the microglial phagocytosis‐related genes Nos2 , Cd68 , Aif1/Iba1 , Cyba , Itgam , and Fcer1g compared to WT mice at Day 5 after systemic inflammatory challenge, but no significant differences in the pro‐inflammatory genes Tnfα and Il1b as well as microglial IBA1 and CD68 intensities were observed between both genotypes. Furthermore, loss of tyrosine hydroxylase positive (TH+) and NeuN positive neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta upon repeated systemic LPS application were attenuated in NOX‐2 KO mice. Thus, our data demonstrate that loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta after repeated systemic challenge with LPS is associated with a microglial phagocytosis‐related gene activation profile involving the NADPH oxidase subunit Cybb/gp91phox. We investigate the properties of various notions of volume for convex co-compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds, and their relations with the geometry of the Teichmüller space. We prove a first-order variation formula for the dual volume of the convex core, as a function over the space of quasi-isometric deformations of a convex co-compact hyperbolic 3-manifold. For quasi-Fuchsian manifolds, we show that the dual volume of the convex core is bounded from above by a linear function of the Weil-Petersson distance between the pair of hyperbolic structures on the boundary of the convex core. We prove that, as we vary the convex co-compact structure on a fixed hyperbolic 3-manifold with incompressible boundary, the infimum of the dual volume of the convex core coincides with the infimum of the Riemannian volume of the convex core. We study various properties of the foliation by constant Gaussian curvature surfaces (k-surfaces) of convex co-compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We present a description of the renormalized volume of a quasi-Fuchsian manifold in terms of its foliation by k-surfaces. We show the existence of a Hamiltonian flow over the cotangent space of Teichmüller space, whose flow lines corresponds to the immersion data of the k-surfaces sitting inside a fixed hyperbolic end, and we determine a generalization of McMullen’s Kleinian reciprocity, again by means of the constant Gaussian curvature surfaces foliation. ELIXIR is a pan-European intergovernmental organisation for life science that aims to coordinate bioinformatics resources in a single infrastructure across Europe; bioinformatics training is central to its strategy, which aims to develop a training community that spans all ELIXIR member states. In an evidence-based approach for strengthening bioinformatics training programmes across Europe, the ELIXIR Training Platform, led by the ELIXIR EXCELERATE Quality and Impact Assessment Subtask in collaboration with the ELIXIR Training Coordinators Group, has implemented an assessment strategy to measure quality and impact of its entire training portfolio. Here, we present ELIXIR's framework for assessing training quality and impact, which includes the following: specifying assessment aims, determining what data to collect in order to address these aims, and our strategy for centralised data collection to allow for ELIXIR-wide analyses. In addition, we present an overview of the ELIXIR training data collected over the past 4 years. We highlight the importance of a coordinated and consistent data collection approach and the relevance of defining specific metrics and answer scales for consortium-wide analyses as well as for comparison of data across iterations of the same course. It elaborates on blockchain technology employing a succinct approach, which serves as the foundation to comprehend the contributions of the present research work. The dissertation gives a verified mathematical model, derived using Nash equilibrium, to function as a framework for blockchain governance. The work elucidates the design, implementation and evaluation of a management plane to monitor and manage blockchain-based decentralized applications. The dissertation also solves the problem of data privacy by the development and evaluation of a management plane for differential privacy preservation through smart contracts. Further, the research work discusses the compliance of the privacy management plane to GDPR using a permissioned blockchain platform. The dissertation is a pioneer in conducting an implementation-based, comparative and an exploratory analysis of tokenization of ethical investment certificates. The dissertation also verifies the utility of blockchain to solve some prevalent issues in social finance. It accomplishes this through the development and testing of a blockchain-based donation application. A qualitative review of the economic impact of blockchain-based micropayments has also been conducted. The discussion on the economic impact also includes a proposition for extending the access of blockchain-based financial services to the underbanked and unbanked people. Due to the continuous decrease of physical activity of children in industrialized countries physical activity behavior has become a key issue in health-related research. The purpose of this study was to assess objectively the daily physical activity of Luxembourgish children and adolescents and its distribution into school and leisure time. The physical activity behavior of 242 students (108 male students, 134 female students) with an average age of 12.84 years (SD = 2.37) was objectively assessed by wearing an accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X-BT) for seven consecutive days. The average daily time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity was 47.75 minutes (SD = 19.75). 62 students accumulated the recommended 60 minutes per day. 32% of students’ total moderate to vigorous physical activity occurred during school time and 63% during leisure time. During physical education, students were engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity on average for 20.02%, whereas 46.93% of the time was spent being sedentary. Significant gender differences were found for all variables in favor of male students. Equally, physical activity in all areas decreased significantly with age. The Luxembourgish children and adolescents are insufficient physically active and the moderate to vigorous physical activity levels are mainly accounted by leisure time. Therefore, it seems reasonable for schools to create an environment that supports the physical activity throughout the school day to increase the daily physical activity, with special attention to female and older students.
