The ability to assess learning outcomes is vital to effective teaching. Without understanding what students have learned, it is impossible to tailor information, tasks or feedback adequately to their individual needs. Thus, so-called assessment literacy has been increasingly recognized as a core teacher competency in educational research, with many empirical studies investigating teachers’ abilities, knowledge and subjective views in relation to classroom assessment. In contrast, relatively few studies have focused on students’ perspectives of assessment. This is surprising, since gathering students’ feedback on their teachers’ assessment practices seems a logical step toward improving those practices. To help fill this gap, we present an explorative study using the recently developed Fairness Barometer as a tool to help identify specific strengths and weaknesses in individual teachers’ assessment methods. Viewing assessment through the lens of classroom justice theory, the Fairness Barometer asks students and teachers to rate aspects of procedural and informational justice in their own (teachers’) classroom assessment practices. We examined the resulting fairness discrepancy profiles for 10 Austrian secondary school classes (177 students). Results showed wide variation in profile pattern, evidence that both students and teachers can differentiate between different aspects of assessment fairness. Further exploration of the resulting discrepancy-profiles revealed certain problem types with some teachers differing from their students’ perception in almost every rated aspect, some showing specific assessment-related behaviors that require improvement (e.g. explaining grading criteria of oral exams), and others demonstrating almost identical responses as their students to the addressed fairness aspects. Results clearly indicate the potential of the Fairness Barometer to be used for teacher training and teacher self-development within the domain of teacher assessment literacy. [less ▲]

Dyslexia, a persistent reading disorder, is characterized by different brain activation patterns when reading. Here, we used a Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation paradigm during EEG recordings to assess the sensitivity of dyslexics to fine-grained psycholinguistic variations of letter strings: lexicality, lexical frequency, and orthographic regularity. Dyslexic and non-dyslexic students watched 60-seconds streams of stimuli presented at 10Hz, in which deviant items are inserted periodically (1/8, at 1.25Hz). Results show discrimination responses at 1.25Hz over left posterior occipito-temporal regions, reduced in dyslexics. Group differences were significant for discrimination of word lexicality and frequency, but not for word regularity. These results show that FPVS response amplitude distinguishes normal from pathological population. Since explicit reading is prohibited by the fast rate, results suggest differences of automatic and implicit word processing in dyslexics. The lack of group difference for regular/irregular words is interpreted post-hoc as reflecting the life-long drill of dyslexics to irregular words. [less ▲]

The impact of teaching methods on the left hemispheric (LH) specialization for reading in children remains unknown. We tested 42 first graders (mean age: 6.08 years) from schools using both a phonic and a global method in parallel, behaviorally and with Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation using electroencephalography. 40-sec strings of pseudofonts were displayed at 6Hz, in which were periodically displayed (1.2Hz) either words taught at school with whole-word form rote-learning (global method) or control pseudowords eliciting grapheme-phoneme mappings (phonic method). Control pseudowords elicited LH responses whatever the reading ability. For global words, a difference emerged as a function of group: in good and average readers, responses were stronger in the LH, while in poor readers, global words elicited an atypical bilateral neural pattern due to reduced response amplitude in the LH. These results suggest that difficulties in automatizing GP mappings induce reliance on an alternative visual strategy when available. [less ▲]

Precise and robust localization is of fundamental importance for robots required to carry out autonomous tasks. Above all, in the case of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), efficiency and reliability are critical aspects in developing solutions for localization due to the limited computational capabilities, payload and power constraints. In this work, we leverage novel research in efficient deep neural architectures for the problem of 6 Degrees of Freedom (6-DoF) pose estimation from single RGB camera images. In particular, we introduce an efficient neural network to jointly regress the position and orientation of the camera with respect to the navigation environment. Experimental results show that the proposed network is capable of retaining similar results with respect to the most popular state of the art methods while being smaller and with lower latency, which are fundamental aspects for real-time robotics applications. The magnetic state of low temperature martensite phase in Co-substituted Ni-Mn-Sn-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) has been investigated, in view of numerous conflicting reports of occurrences of spin glass (SG), superparamagnetism (SPM) or long range anti- ferromagnetic (AF) ordering. Combination of dc magnetization, ac susceptibility and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies provide a clear evidence for AF order in martensitic phase of Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12 alloy and rule out SPM and SG orders. Identical studies on another alloy of close composition of Ni44Co6Mn40Sn10 point to presence of SG order in martensitic phase and absence of SPM behavior, contrary to earlier report. SANS results do show presence of nanometre-sized clusters but they are found to grow in size from 3 nm at 30 K to 11 nm at 300 K, and do not correlate with magnetism in these alloys. <P /> [less ▲]

The multiferroic behavior of CoCr$_2$O$_4$ results from the appearance of conical spin-spiral magnetic ordering, which induces electric polarization. The magnetic ground state has a complex size dependent behavior, which collapses when reaching a critical particle size. Here, the magnetic phase stability of CoCr$_2$O$_4$ in the size range of 3.6 - 14.0 nm is presented in detail using the combination of neutron diffraction with XYZ polarization analysis and macroscopic magnetization measurements. We establish critical coherent domain sizes for the formation of the spin spiral and ferrimagnetic structure and reveal the evolution of the incommensurate spin spiral vector with particle size. We further confirm the presence of ferroelectric polarization in the spin spiral phase for nanocrystalline CoCr$_2$O$_4$. <P /> [less ▲]

We study a one-dimensional interacting quantum liquid hosting a pair of mobile impurities causing backscattering. We determine the effective retarded interaction between the two impurities mediated by the liquid. We show that for strong backscattering this interaction gives rise to resonances and antiresonances in the finite-frequency mobility of the impurity pair. At the antiresonances, the two impurities remain at rest even when driven by a (small) external force. At the resonances, their synchronous motion follows the external drive in phase and reaches maximum amplitude. Using a perturbative renormalization group analysis in quantum tunneling across the impurities, we study the range of validity of our model. We predict that these mechanical antiresonances are observable in experiments on ultracold atom gases confined to one dimension. [less ▲]

Android apps are prone to crash. This often arises from the misuse of Android framework APIs, making it harder to debug since official Android documentation does not discuss thoroughly potential exceptions.Recently, the program repair community has also started to investigate the possibility to fix crashes automatically. Current results, however, apply to limited example cases. In both scenarios of repair, the main issue is the need for more example data to drive the fix processes due to the high cost in time and effort needed to collect and identify fix examples. We propose in this work a scalable approach, CraftDroid, to mine crash fixes by leveraging a set of 28 thousand carefully reconstructed app lineages from app markets, without the need for the app source code or issue reports. We developed a replicative testing approach that locates fixes among app versions which output different runtime logs with the exact same test inputs. Overall, we have mined 104 relevant crash fixes, further abstracted 17 fine-grained fix templates that are demonstrated to be effective for patching crashed apks. Finally, we release ReCBench, a benchmark consisting of 200 crashed apks and the crash replication scripts, which the community can explore for evaluating generated crash-inducing bug patches. In existing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), data collection intervals for each smart meter (SM) typically vary from 15 to 60 min. If we have 1 million SMs that transmit data every 15 min, these SMs will export 4 million records per hour. This leads to dramatically increasing bandwidth usage, energy consumption, traffic cost and I/O congestion. In this work, we present an adaptive framework for minimizing the amount of data transfer from SMs. The reduction in the framework is forecasting-based; when an SM reading is close to the forecasted value, the SM does not transmit the reading. In order for the framework to be adaptive to the ever-changing pattern of SM data, it is provided with a pool of forecasting methods. A supervised-learning scheme is employed to switch in real-time to the forecasting method most suitable to the current data pattern. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves data reduction rates up to 98% with accuracy 96%, depending on the operational parameters of the framework and consumer behavior (statistical features of SM data). OBJECTIVES: To create a theoretical framework for analyzing cultural influences on older people’s transition into a nursing home (NH). THEORIES: Action theories in cultural and developmental psychology (Boesch, 2001; Brandtstädter, 2006), social representations theory (Marková, 2012), theory of culture as a semiotic regulation system (Valsiner, 2007). METHODS: (1) Conceptualization of NH care and family care as alternative action paths for meeting the needs of older persons and their relatives. (2) Conceptualization of culture as a product of human actions and as offering different possibilities of care-related actions. (3) Systematization of care-related goals and instrumental values of NH care versus family care. (4) Theoretical mapping of cultural factors on proximal determinants of elder care decisions and actions. RESULTS: The framework contains the following propositions. Older people and family caregivers hold multiple goals (e.g., welfare of family carers, welfare of old person). NH care can meet some goals and simultaneously frustrate others. The effects and choice of NH care depends on a variety of cultural factors: Legal regulations for warranting care quality (e.g., nursing home laws), economic concepts and practices (e.g., business models of elder care) and professionalization (e.g., staff training). Family care depends on institutionalized options for reconciling job-, care- and other family-related duties (e.g., mobile care services, day care units) and for compensating expenses (e.g., care insurance). Cultural concepts of care dependency influence the meanings that individuals attribute to NH care. CONCLUSIONS: The framework specifies cultural factors relevant for older peoples’ transition into a NH and delineates mediating paths. It invites other sciences specialized on relevant cultural factors (e.g., law, political science, social economics) to further refine the analysis. An identification of cultural factors affecting NH care opens new options for improving care quality or living conditions of older persons, family and professional carers. [less ▲]

Enhanced legitimacy is a driving force behind deliberative innovations (Fung 2015, Curato and Böker 2016). This is no less the case for constitutional deliberative innovations. Assessing deliberative constitutionalism’s success in generating legitimacy necessitates a better grasp of the distinct legitimacy standards which constitutional deliberative innovations may meet. Bound up with those standards is deliberative constitutionalism’s attempt to navigate the tension between politics and law, constituent power (CP) and constituted form (CF). How do factors of deliberative legitimacy interact with standard ways of modelling that tension? To answer this question, I proceed in three parts, the first of which maps ten factors of deliberative legitimacy at four levels: personal, interpersonal, institutional, and systemic. The second lays out four ways of modelling the tension between CP and CF from Loughlin and Walker (2007): the containment, mutual articulation, radical potential, and irritant models. The last part sets out to determine whether the four models directly or indirectly support or neglect the realization of the forms of deliberative legitimacy and casts in a different light from Parkinson (2016) the landscape of deliberative democracy and constitutions. I conclude that certain forms of deliberative legitimacy may be more sensitive to and better served by some models of CP and CF than by others. [less ▲]

We examine the effects of monetary policy on household self-assessed financial stress and durable consumption using panel data from eighteen annual waves of the British Household Panel Survey. For identification, we exploit random variation in household exposure to interest rates generated by the random timing of household interview dates with respect to policy rate changes. After accounting for household and month-year-of- interview fixed effects, we uncover significant heterogeneities in the way monetary policy affects household groups that differ in housing and saving status. In particular, an increase in the interest rate induces financial stress among mortgagors and renters, while it lessens financial stress of savers. We find symmetric effects on durable consumption, mainly driven by mortgagors with high debt burden or limited access to liquidity and younger renters who are prospective home buyers. [less ▲]

DevOps processes comply with principles and offer practices with main objective to support efficiently the evolution of IT systems. To be efficient a DevOps process relies on a set of integrated tools. DevOps is among the first competencies together with Agile method required by the industry. As a new approach it is necessary to develop and offer to the academy and to the industry training programs to prepare our engineers in the best possible way. In this chapter we present the main aspects of the educational effort made in the recent years to educate to the concepts and values of the DevOps philosophy. This includes principles, practices, tools and architectures, primarily the microservices architectural style, which shares many aspects of DevOps approaches especially the modularity and flexibility which enables continuous change and delivery. Two experiences have been made, one at academic level as a master program course and the other, as an industrial training. Based on those two experiences, we provide a comparative analysis and some proposals in order to develop and improve DevOps education for the future. [less ▲]
