The mobile app Schnëssen is intended to establish a state-of-the-art digital platform to collect data on the present-day language situation of Luxembourgish by means of crowd-sourcing and to document and present results to a broader public. Users can participate in a large set of audio recordings tasks and in sociolinguistic surveys. By presenting all audio recordings via an interactive map, participants can explore the language variation of their language. In the first year of data collection, around 210.000 recordings could be collected for numerous variation phenomena from all linguistic levels and over 2800 sociolinguistic questionnaires have been filled out. The app allowed us to compile thus the largest systematic spoken language corpus of Luxembourgish. [less ▲]

Für die großflächige, deutschlandweite Kartierung und Analyse der Familiennamen (FamilienN, im Folgenden steht „N“ für Name(n)) stellt bis heute die nach Postleitzahlen gegliederte Datenbank der Telefonanschlüsse, wie sie im Telefonbuch der Deutschen Telekom von 2005 verzeichnet sind die Datenbasis des Projekts 'Deutscher Familiennamenatlas' dar. Im Folgenden werden wir eine neue umfangreiche Datenbasis der deutschen FamilienN vorstellen, die die bisherige um eine historische Dimension erweitern wird. Es handelt sich um die Datenbank der Verlustlisten der Kriegsteilnehmer des Ersten Weltkriegs, die mit ihren rund 7,7 Millionen Namenträgern aus allen Gebieten des damaligen Deutschen Reichs die gesamte FamilienN-Landschaft des ausgehenden 19. Jh. umfassen. Mit dieser neuen Datenbasis wird es möglich sein, die heutige FamilienN-Landschaft mit derjenigen vor 130 Jahren zu vergleichen und damit zum ersten Mal die regionale Festigkeit bzw. Veränderung der FamilienN zu erforschen. Unberührt von den großen europäischen Migrationswellen des 20. Jh. und erst am Beginn der durch die Industrialisierung beschleunigten Urbanisierung, repräsentieren die Verlustlisten die Namenverteilung einer im Vergleich zu heute deutlich weniger mobilen, überwiegend ländlichen Gesellschaft. Über diese neue Kartierungsgrundlage hinaus leisten die Verlustlisten wertvolle Dienste bei der Etymologisierung, bei sprachgeschichtlichen, dialektologischen oder graphematischen Fragestellungen sowie für die Migrationsforschung. In this paper, the cell based smoothed finite element method is extended to solve stochastic partial diff erential equations with uncertain input parameters. The spatial field of Young's moduli and the corresponding stochastic results are represented by Karhunen-Lo eve expansion and polynomial chaos expansion, respectively. The Young's Modulus of structure is considered to be random for stochastic static as well as free vibration problems. Mathematical expressions and the solution procedure are articulated in detail to evaluate the statistical characteristics of responses in terms of static displacements and free vibration frequencies. The feasibility and eff ectiveness of the proposed SGCS-FEM method in terms of accuracy and lower requirement on the mesh size in the solution domain over that of conventional FEM for stochastic problems are demonstrated by carefully chosen numerical examples. From the numerical study, it is inferred that the proposed framework is computationally less demanding without compromising accuracy. [less ▲]

We study the problem of computing a minimal subset of nodes of a given asynchronous Boolean network that need to be perturbed in a single-step to drive its dynamics from an initial state to a target steady state (or attractor), which we call the source-target control of Boolean networks. Due to the phenomenon of state-space explosion, a simple global approach that performs computations on the entire network, may not scale well for large networks. We believe that efficient algorithms for such networks must exploit the structure of the networks together with their dynamics. Taking this view, we derive a decomposition-based solution to the minimal source-target control problem which can be significantly faster than the existing approaches on large networks. We then show that the solution can be further optimised if we take into account appropriate information about the source state. We apply our solutions to both real-life biological networks and randomly generated networks, demonstrating the efficiency and efficacy of our approach. [less ▲]

Slender constituents are present in many structures and materials. In associated mechanical models, each slender constituent is often described with a beam. Contact between beams is essential to incorporate in mechanical models, but associated contact frameworks are only demonstrated to work for beams with circular cross-sections. Only two studies have shown the ability to treat contact between beams with elliptical cross-sections, but those frameworks are limited to point-wise contact, which narrows their applicability. This contribution presents initial results of a framework for shear-deformable beams with elliptical cross-sections if contact occurs along a line or at an area (instead of at a point). This is achieved by integrating a penalty potential over one of the beams’ surfaces. Simo-Reissner Geometrically Exact Beam (GEB) elements are employed to discretise each beam. As the surface of an assembly of such beam elements is discontinuous, a smoothed surface is introduced to formulate the contact kinematics. This enables the treatment of contact for large sliding displacements and substantial deformations. [less ▲]

Anxiety symptoms and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent among older adults, and are associ- ated with considerable distress, functional impairment, and burden. Also, there is growing need for brief instruments to measure anxiety symptoms in primary care and geriatric medical settings. Therefore, the current study focuses on the development and psychometric evaluation of a short- form of the Geriatric Anxiety Scale (GAS-G), a well-established anxiety instrument for use with older adults. Study 1 draws on the original data from the GAS-G validation study (N1⁄4242) to develop the short-form (GAS-G-SF) and determines whether the results replicate with the short- form. Study 2 extends the validation of the GAS-G-SF to a clinical sample (N1⁄4156; 62 patients with heart disease, 94 patients with Parkinson’s disease). Overall, the GAS-G-SF showed promising psychometric properties in terms of internal consistency and validity. Also, the GAS-G-SF showed good discriminatory power based on receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in both stud- ies. These results support the utility of the GAS-G-SF as a brief assessment measure for anxiety. [less ▲]

In a time of worldwide availability of annual age-specific mortality data, we lack basic tools for detecting and graphing, from a comparative perspective, fine-grained deviations from mortality trends. We provide a new age-period-cohort-based methodology, combining information from age-period (AP) and APC-Detrended (APCD) analyses to detect all-cause mortality increases. Plotting the resulting AP coefficients and APCD residuals in equilateral Lexis diagrams, mortality patterns can easily be distinguished as age, period, or cohort trends and fluctuations. We highlight abnormalities as interactions of age and period (‘Black Holes’). We then investigate the ‘Black Holes’ of mortality of young-adult cohorts in the early 1990s in Spain, other southern European countries, and the U.S., in emphasizing their simultaneously occurring mortality crises. Additional analyses with WHO mortality data and epidemiological evidence from other studies show that these mortality increases likely result from lack of treatment and inadequate public health responses to the beginnings of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This paper introduces the paired lasso: a generalisation of the lasso for paired covariate settings. Our aim is to predict a single response from two high-dimensional covariate sets. We assume a one-to-one correspondence between the covariate sets, with each covariate in one set forming a pair with a covariate in the other set. Paired covariates arise, for example, when two transformations of the same data are available. It is often unknown which of the two covariate sets leads to better predictions, or whether the two covariate sets complement each other. The paired lasso addresses this problem by weighting the covariates to improve the selection from the covariate sets and the covariate pairs. It thereby combines information from both covariate sets and accounts for the paired structure. We tested the paired lasso on more than 2000 classification problems with experimental genomics data, and found that for estimating sparse but predictive models, the paired lasso outperforms the standard and the adaptive lasso.
