We propose a parallel and computationally efficient multi-split XFEM approach for 3-D analysis of heterogeneous materials. In this approach, multiple discontinuities (pores and reinforcement particles) may intersect any given element (we call those elements multi-split elements). These discontinuities are modeled by imposing additional degrees of freedom at the nodes. The main advantage of the proposed scheme is that the mesh size remains independent of the relative distance among the heterogeneities/discontinuities. The pores and reinforcement particles are assumed to be spherical. The simulations are performed for uniform and non-uniform heterogeneity distribution. The Young’s modulus of the heterogeneous material is evaluated for different amount of pores and reinforcement particles. To demonstrate the computational efficiency of the multi-split XFEM, elastic damage analysis is performed for the unit cell with 5% pores and 5% reinforcement particles under uniaxial tensile loading. These simulations show that the Young’s modulus decreases linearly with the increase in the volume fraction of the pores and increases linearly with the increase in volume fraction of reinforcement particles. The multi-split XFEM is found to be at least 1.8 times computationally efficient than standard XFEM and at least 6.7 times computationally efficient than FEM. [less ▲]

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sexual addiction is a pathological behavior characterized by a combination of excessive sexual desire and impaired ability to control it. Its incidence ranges between 1.2% and 32.2%, although this number may vary depending on the screening tool used. This wide variability is largely due to the use of non-validated instruments (e.g., structural validity relying on exploratory analyses, instruments translated without an additional validation process, or instruments validated in another format). To deal with these limitations, this study tested the psychometric properties of the Spanish paper-and-pencil and online versions of the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST). METHODS: A total of 2,528 participants (1,163 males) completed the Spanish version of the SAST, along with other instruments assessing sexual compulsivity (1,585 = paper-and-pencil, 943 = online). RESULTS: The exploratory factor analysis yielded a four-factor structure explaining 57.39% of the variance for the SAST paper-and-pencil version. This factor structure was then verified for the online version through the use of confirmatory factor analysis [chi(2)(264) = 441.59; chi(2)/df = 1.66; RMSEA = 0.02; CFI = 0.94; IFI = 0.94]. This methodology was also used to support measurement invariance (configural, metric, and scalar invariance) according to gender. The reliability of the total score ranged from .82 to .85. Similarly, correlations with related scales were positive and significant (r between .22 and .71). Temporal stability 1 year after the first application was 0.65 (paper-and-pencil format) and 0.60 (online version). CONCLUSION: These results, together with the absence of questionnaires translated into Spanish to assess this construct, justify the use of the SAST in the evaluation of sexual addiction in Spanish-speaking countries. T helper (Th)17 cells represent a unique subset of CD4(+) T cells and are vital for clearance of extracellular pathogens including bacteria and fungi. However, Th17 cells are also involved in orchestrating autoimmunity. By employing quantitative surface proteomics, we found that the evolutionarily conserved prohibitins (PHB1/2) are highly expressed on the surface of both murine and human Th17 cells. Increased expression of PHBs at the cell surface contributed to enhanced CRAF/MAPK activation in Th17 cells. Targeting surface-expressed PHBs on Th17 cells with ligands such as Vi polysaccharide (Typhim vaccine) inhibited CRAF-MAPK pathway, reduced interleukin (IL)-17 expression and ameliorated disease pathology with an increase in FOXP3(+)-expressing Tregs in an animal model for multiple sclerosis (MS). Interestingly, we detected a CD4(+) T cell population with high PHB1 surface expression in blood samples from MS patients in comparison with age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Our observations suggest a pivotal role for the PHB-CRAF-MAPK signalling axis in regulating the polarization and pathogenicity of Th17 cells and unveil druggable targets in autoimmune disorders such as MS. We study a supply chain where a retailer buys from a supplier who faces financial constraints. Informational problems about the supplier’s demand prospects and production capabilities restrict her access to capital. By committing to a minimum purchase quantity, the retailer can mitigate these informational problems and expand the supplier’s feasible production set. We assume a newsvendor model of operations and analyze the strategic interaction of the two parties as a sequential game. Key parameters in our model are the supplier’s ex ante credit limit, her informational transparency—which conditions the amount of additional capital released by the commitment—and the demand characteristics of the final market. We show that in equilibrium the supplier can benefit from a lower ex ante credit limit or lower informational transparency. The retailer always benefits from an increase in these parameters. We also indicate limits to the commitment approach: under certain conditions, the retailer may prefer to relax the supplier’s financial constraint by adjusting the wholesale price, or a combination of wholesale price and commitment. In this study, conductive carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were dispersed into epoxy resin and then infused into glass fiber fabric to fabricate CNF/glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates. The electrical resistance and strain of CNF/GFRP laminates were measured simultaneously during tensile loadings to investigate the in situ strain and damage monitoring capability of CNF/GFRP laminates. The damage evolution and conduction mechanisms of the laminates were also presented. The results indicated that the percolation threshold of CNFs content for CNF/GFRP laminates was 0.86 wt % based on a typical power law. The resistance response during monotonic tensile loading could be classified into three stages corresponding to different damage mechanisms, which demonstrated a good ability of in situ damage monitoring of the CNF/GFRP laminates. In addition, the capacity of in situ strain monitoring of the laminates during small strain stages was also confirmed according to the synchronous and reversible resistance responses to strain under constant cyclic tensile loading. Moreover, the analysis of the resistance responses during incremental amplitude cyclic tensile loading with the maximum strain of 1.5% suggested that in situ strain and damage monitoring of the CNF/GFRP laminates were feasible and stable.
