The phenomenon of migrant children going missing has recently received increased attention from the media in several Member States and the European Parliament. The debate focusses on unaccompanied minors who go missing. There is concern that the disappearance of unaccompanied minors is not addressed yet in an effective manner, as reflected in several recent publications by international organisations2 and European NGOs. In response to this concern, the EMN, at the request of the European Commission, has mapped how cases of unaccompanied children going missing are being treated in the Member States, and respectively, how data on missing children is collected. NGOs have been asked to reflect on the outcomes of this mapping exercise. [less ▲]

With renewed global interest for Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods, the past decade has seen a myriad of new programming models and tools that enable better and faster Machine Learning (ML). More recently, a subset of ML known as Deep Learning (DL) raised an increased interest due to its inherent ability to tackle efficiently novel cognitive computing applications. DL allows computational models that are composed of multiple processing layers to learn in an automated way representations of data with multiple levels of abstraction, and can deliver higher predictive accuracy when trained on larger data sets. Based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), DL is now at the core of state of the art voice recognition systems (which enable easy control over e.g. Internet-of- Things (IoT) smart home appliances for instance), self-driving car engine, online recommendation systems. The ecosystem of DL frameworks is fast evolving, as well as the DL architectures that are shown to perform well on specialized tasks and to exploit GPU accelerators. For this reason, the frequent performance evaluation of the DL ecosystem is re- quired, especially since the advent of novel distributed training frameworks such as Horovod allowing for scalable training across multiple computing resources. In this paper, the scalability evaluation of the reference DL frameworks (Tensorflow, Keras, MXNet, and PyTorch) is performed over up-to-date High Performance Comput- ing (HPC) resources to compare the efficiency of differ- ent implementations across several hardware architectures (CPU and GPU). Experimental results demonstrate that the DistributedDataParallel features in the Pytorch library seem to be the most efficient framework for distributing the training process across many devices, allowing to reach a throughput speedup of 10.11 when using 12 NVidia Tesla V100 GPUs when training Resnet44 on the CIFAR10 dataset. In an ongoing study (data collection will be finished in late December 2019) healthy participants play the VR game Subnautica in two conditions (high vs. low cognitive load). Pain thresholds and psychophysiological measures are assessed during play to measure the distraction effect. Moral dilemmas have become increasingly popular in video games, although it is still widely unknown why players might find them pleasurable, how they process dilemmas, and which factors affect the processing. Therefore, three different focus groups sessions with expert gamers (N = 16) were conducted. Gamers’ expressions of their experience with meaningful and morally relevant game situations were grouped for relevant topics. Topics are supported by direct quotations from participants of discussion groups, referring to up-to-date video game titles and presented together with respective theoretical assumptions. Results show that besides the game-defining theme of interactivity, statements can be grouped broadly into factors that describe why players engage or disengage in the first place (motivation) and factors that shape the moral interaction itself (influencing factors). In summary, our findings support the notion that moral-decision making in video games is a dynamic interplay between several game and user-dependent variables. Findings provide insights into players’ processing of moral dilemmas in video games, which also offers promising suggestions for future research using experimental setups. [less ▲]

Privacy attacks reported in the literature alerted the research community for the existing serious privacy issues in current biomedical process workflows. Since sharing biomedical data is vital for the advancement of research and the improvement of medical healthcare, reconciling sharing with privacy assumes an overwhelming importance. In this thesis, we state the need for effective privacy-preserving measures for biomedical data processing, and study solutions for the problem in one of the harder contexts, genomics. The thesis focuses on the specific properties of the human genome that make critical parts of it privacy-sensitive and tries to prevent the leakage of such critical information throughout the several steps of the sequenced genomic data analysis and processing workflow. In order to achieve this goal, it introduces efficient and effective privacy-preserving mechanisms, namely at the level of reads filtering right upon sequencing, and alignment. Human individuals share the majority of their genome (99.5%), the remaining 0.5% being what distinguishes one individual from all others. However, that information is only revealed after two costly processing steps, alignment and variant calling, which today are typically run in clouds for performance efficiency, but with the corresponding privacy risks. Reaping the benefits of cloud processing, we set out to neutralize the privacy risks, by identifying the sensitive (i.e., discriminating) nucleotides in raw genomic data, and acting upon that. The first contribution is DNA-SeAl, a systematic classification of genomic data into different levels of sensitivity with regard to privacy, leveraging the output of a state-of-the-art automatic filter (SRF) isolating the critical sequences. The second contribution is a novel filtering approach, LRF, which undertakes the early protection of sensitive information in the raw reads right after sequencing, for sequences of arbitrary length (long reads), improving SRF, which only dealt with short reads. The last contribution proposed in this thesis is MaskAl, an SGX-based privacy-preserving alignment approach based on the filtering method developed. These contributions entailed several findings. The first finding of this thesis is the performance × privacy product improvement achieved by implementing multiple sensitivity levels. The proposed example of three sensitivity levels allows to show the benefits of mapping progressively sensitive levels to classes of alignment algorithms with progressively higher privacy protection (albeit at the cost of a performance tradeoff). In this thesis, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed sensitivity levels classification, DNA-SeAl. Just by considering three levels of sensitivity and taking advantage of three existing classes of alignment algorithms, the performance of privacy-preserving alignment significantly improves when compared with state-of-the-art approaches. For reads of 100 nucleotides, 72% have low sensitivity, 23% have intermediate sensitivity, and the remaining 5% are highly sensitive. With this distribution, DNA-SeAl is 5.85× faster and it requires 5.85× less data transfers than the binary classification – two sensitivity levels. The second finding is the sensitive genomic information filtering improvement by replacing the per read classification with a per nucleotide classification. With this change, the filtering approach proposed in this thesis (LRF) allows the filtering of sequences of arbitrary length (long reads), instead of the classification limited to short reads provided by the state-of-the-art filtering approach (SRF). This thesis shows that around 10% of an individuals genome is classified as sensitive by the developed LRF approach. This improves the 60% achieved by the previous state of the art, the SRF approach. The third finding is the possibility of building a privacy-preserving alignment approach based on reads filtering. The sensitivity-adapted alignment relying on hybrid environments, in particular composed by common (e.g., public cloud) and trustworthy execution environments (e.g., SGX enclave cloud) in clouds, gets the best of both worlds: it enjoys the resource and performance optimization of cloud environments,while providing a high degree of protection to genomic data. We demonstrate that MaskAl is 87% faster than existing privacy-preserving alignment algorithms (Balaur), with similar privacy guarantees. On the other hand, Maskal is 58% slower compared to BWA, a highly efficient non-privacy preserving alignment algorithm. In addition, MaskAl requires less 95% of RAM memory and it requires between 5.7 GB and 15 GB less data transfers in comparison with Balaur. This thesis breaks new ground on the simultaneous achievement of two important goals of genomics data processing: availability of data for sharing; and privacy preservation. We hope to have shown that our work, being generalisable, gives a significant step in the direction of, and opens new avenues for, wider-scale, secure, and cooperative efforts and projects within the biomedical information processing life cycle. This article provides a starting point for the understudied pre-nineteenth-century reception of Assyria. In early modern Europe, knowledge about ancient Assyria was mainly derived from a small pool of classical authors; an entirely textual tradition, centred around the figures of Semiramis and Sardanapalus, which was transmitted through strict repetition in late medieval and early modern history writing. The narrow scope and repetitive nature of this tradition raise questions for historiography – what kind of historical knowledge can be produced from such limited sources? And, crucially, what notions about Assyria can emerge here? By examining the treatment of Semiramis and Sardanapalus in three geographically and chronologically diverse case-studies (Giovanni Boccaccio, Johannes Carion and Philip Melanchthon, and Walter Ralegh), this article sheds light on the negotiations between received practices and historiographical trends, the influence of moral imperatives and gendered logic, and establishes the longevity and pan-European spread of the historiographical tradition on Assyria. Dans le cadre du projet BMC-EU (Compétences motrices de base en Europe), une boîte à outils pour la formation des enseignants reprenant le concept de formation ainsi qu’un manuel d'utilisation (BMC-EU production intellectuelle 4) a été développée afin de soutenir la mise en œuvre de la formation aux tests MOBAK (boîte à outils pour l’enseignant-support théorique) la base du concept de compétences motrices de base (BMC-EU production intellectuelle 3 ; Scheuer & Heck, 2020). L'objectif de cette boîte à outils de soutien est d'être mis en œuvre principalement au niveau des cours réguliers d'éducation physique pour aider les enseignants d’éducation physique à adapter leurs contenus et leurs méthodes d'enseignement. La boîte à outils pour la formation des enseignants présente les éléments à mettre en œuvre lors de formations d'enseignants. Celles-ci sont structurées en une partie théorique et une partie pratique. Dans un premier temps, les enseignants sont familiarisés avec le concept MOBAK, la mesure, la procédure de test, le traitement des données et l’évaluation ainsi qu'avec l'interprétation des résultats du test. Dans une deuxième partie, ils apprennent à passer du diagnostic des compétences motrices de base des élèves et des forces et faiblesses identifiées dans l'évaluation à des interventions concrètes en utilisant le cadre de soutien MOBAK et les documents qui l'accompagnent sous la forme d'un support théorique (boîte à outils pour l’enseignant), prêt à être mis en œuvre dans des situations éducatives concrètes pour soutenir les élèves ayant des besoins supplémentaires en compétences motrices de base. Translanguaging pedagogies promise to capitalise on students’ language backgrounds, improve their academic achievements and address social inequalities. While research studies in monolingual, bilingual and multilingual contexts testify to the benefits of translanguaging for learning, well-being and identity-building, few studies focus on early childhood education and the use of more than two languages. Furthermore, little is known about the implementation of translanguaging pedagogies and the challenges faced by professionals. This article is based on a longitudinal research project which offered a professional development course to develop multilingual pedagogies in early childhood education in Luxembourg, where 63.7% of the 4-year-olds do not speak Luxembourgish as their home language. The article presents challenges which three practitioners faced when implementing a translanguaging pedagogy in their preschool classes as well as the ways in which they overcame them. They changed their negative stance to multilingual education, developed a social-constructivist leaning environment and monitored their language use. The findings shed light on the complexities of the implementation process and the support needed for professional learning. [less ▲]

In het kader van het BMC-EU project (Basismotorische competenties in Europa) heeft men op basis van het concept van basismotorische competenties (BMC-EU intellectuele output), een toolkit voor de training van docenten ontwikkeld met daarbij een bijbehorende gebruikershandleiding. Het doel van deze toolkit is voornamelijk om op het niveau van de reguliere lessen lichamelijke opvoeding aanpassingen te initiëren die van toepassing zijn op de inhoud en methoden in de lichamelijke opvoeding. De training voor docenten is opgedeeld in een praktisch en theoretisch deel. Allereerst worden leraren vertrouwd gemaakt met het MOBAK concept, de meting, testprocedure, de gegevensverwerking en evaluatie, evenals met de interpretatie van de testresultaten. In een tweede deel leren ze hoe ze van de diagnose van de basismotorische competenties van studenten en de sterke en zwakke punten die bij de beoordeling zijn geïdentificeerd, kunnen komen tot concrete interventies. Dit kan door het MOBAK kader en de bijbehorende hand-outs te gebruiken in de vorm van een modulaire ondersteunende toolkit. Deze toolkit kan ingezet worden in concrete onderwijssituaties om kinderen met aanvullende behoeften in basismotorische competenties te ondersteunen. Aangezien de training voor docenten de uitvoering van de toolkit voor de brede motorische ontwikkeling (Scheuer & Heck, 2020), gebaseerd op het MOBAK-concept en meting (Herrmann, 2018), wil ondersteunen en vergemakkelijken, wordt in dit document verwezen naar de ondersteunende toolkit en de MOBAK-testhandleiding. No enquadramento do projeto BMC-EU (Competências motoras básicas na Europa), a ferramenta para a formação de professores consistindo num conceito de formação de professores juntamente com um manual de utilização (BMC-EU intellectual output 4) foi desenvolvido de modo a apoiar a implementação do kit modular de ferramentas para suporte aos professores considerando o conceito de competências motoras básicas (BMC-EU intellectual output 3; Scheuer & Heck, 2020). O objetivo deste kit de ferramentas de suporte é ser implementado principalmente ao nível da educação física regular para iniciar adaptações relativas ao conteúdo e métodos na instrução da educação física. A ferramenta de apoio à formação de professores contém materiais para implementar a formação de professores estruturada, com uma parte teórica e outra prática. Num primeiro passo, os professores estão familiarizados com o conceito MOBAK, medição, procedimentos do teste, tratamento dos dados e avaliação assim como com a interpretação dos resultados do teste. Numa segunda parte eles aprendem como diagnosticar as competências motoras básicas dos alunos e as forças e fraquezas identificadas na avaliação para concretizar intervenções usando o quadro de referência de suporte MOBAK e as fichas que acompanham o Kit de suporte, prontos para serem implementados em situações educativas concretas para apoiar estudantes com necessidades acrescidas nas competências motoras básicas. In the frame of the BMC-EU project (Basic motor competencies in Europe), a teacher training toolkit consisting of a teacher training concept with an accompanying user manual (BMC-EU intellectual output 4) was developed in order to support the implementation of the modular support toolkit on the basis of the concept of basic motor competences (BMC-EU intellectual output 3; Scheuer & Heck, 2020). The aim of this support toolkit is to be implemented mainly at the level of regular physical education lessons to initiate adaptations regarding the content and methods in physical education instruction. The teacher training toolkit contains materials to implement teacher trainings structured in a theoretical and a practical part. In a first step, teachers are familiarized with the MOBAK concept, measurement, test procedure, data procession and evaluation as well as with the interpretation of test results. In a second part, they learn how to get from the diagnosis of the students’ basic motor competencies and the strengths and weaknesses identified in the assessment to concrete interventions by using the MOBAK support framework and the accompanying supportive handouts in form of a modular support toolkit, ready to be implemented in concrete educational situations to support students with additional needs in basic motor competencies. Αρχικά, οι εκπαιδευτικοί εξοικειώνονται με την έννοια του ΜΟΒΑΚ, τις μετρήσεις, τη διαδικασία της εξέτασης, την επεξεργασία των δεδομένων και την αξιολόγηση, καθώς και με την ερμηνεία των αποτελεσμάτων. Στη συνέχεια, μαθαίνουν πώς να μεταβούν από τη διάγνωση των βασικών κινητικών δεξιοτήτων και τον εντοπισμό των αντίστοιχων ικανοτήτων των μαθητών, στον σχεδιασμό και την υλοποίηση συγκεκριμένων παρεμβάσεων με τη χρήση του υποστηρικτικού πλαισίου ΜΟΒΑΚ και των συνοδευτικών υποστηρικτικών φυλλαδίων, που είναι έτοιμα προς εφαρμογή σε συγκεκριμένες εκπαιδευτικές συνθήκες για την υποστήριξη μαθητών με πρόσθετες ανάγκες στις βασικές κινητικές δεξιότητες. Im Rahmen des BMC-EU Projekts (Basic Motor Competencies in Europe) wurde ein Toolkit für die Fortbildung von Sportlehrkräften entwickelt, welches aus einem Fortbildungskonzept inklusive eines Handbuchs (BMC-EU intellectual output 4) besteht. Die Entwicklung dieses Fortbildungskonzepts soll dazu beitragen, dass das modulare Support Toolkit auf der Basis des Konzepts der motorischen Basiskompetenzen (BMC-EU intellectual output 3; Scheuer & Heck, 2020) eingesetzt wird. Das Ziel dieses Support Toolkits ist hauptsächlich der Einsatz auf der Ebene des regulären Sportunterrichts um die Anpassungen, welche den Inhalt und die Methoden des Unterrichtens betreffen, voranzutreiben. Das Toolkit für die Fortbildung von Lehrkräften beinhaltet Materialen, die für die Durchführung einer strukturierten Lehrerfortbildung sowohl im theoretischen als auch im praktischen Teil benötigt werden. Im ersten Schritt werden die Lehrkräfte mit dem MOBAK Konzept, der Datenerhebung, der Testdurchführung, der Datenverarbeitung und –evaluation sowie mit der Interpretation der Testergebnisse vertraut gemacht. Im zweiten Schritt lernen die Lehrkräfte wie sie auf die Stärken und Schwächen ihrer Schülerinnen und Schüler, welche die Ergebnisse aus den Tests zu den motorischen Basiskompetenzen zeigen, fördern können, indem sie das MOBAK Support Toolkit verwenden. Dieses Toolkit kann direkt in konkrete Unterrichtsszenarien eingesetzt werden, um die Schülerinnen und Schüler mit zusätzlichem Förderbedarf in den motorischen Kompetenzen zu unterstützen. Da das Toolkit für die Fortbildung von Lehrkräfte darauf abzielt, die Durchführung des modularen Support Toolkits für Lehrkräfte (Scheuer & Heck, 2020) basierend auf dem MOBAK Konzept (Herrmann, 2018) zu unterstützen und zu ermöglichen, wird in diesem Dokument immer wieder auf das Support Toolkit und das MOBAK Testmanual verwiesen. V rámci projektu BMC-EU (Základné pohybové kompetencie v Európe) bol vytvorený súbor nástrojov odbornej prípravy učiteľov pozostávajúci z koncepcie odbornej prípravy učiteľov so sprievodným návodom na použitie (intelektuálny výstup BMC-EU 4), s cieľom podporiť využitie podporného metodického materiálu na základe koncepcie základných pohybových kompetencií (intelektuálny výstup BMC-EU 3; Scheuer & Heck, 2020). Cieľom tohto podporného materiálu je iniciovať na úrovni pravidelných hodín telesnej a športovej výchovy úpravy týkajúce sa obsahu a metód výučby telesnej a športovej výchovy. Nástroj pre školenie učiteľov obsahuje materiály na realizáciu školení učiteľov štruktúrovaných v teoretickej a praktickej časti. V prvom kroku sú učitelia oboznámení s koncepciou MOBAK, meraním, testovacím postupom, spracovaním a vyhodnotením údajov, ako aj s interpretáciou výsledkov testov. V druhej časti sa naučia, ako získať informácie z diagnostiky základných pohybových kompetencií žiakov a ich silných a slabých stránok identifikovaných pri hodnotení. Tiež sa naučia pracovať s pomocou podporného rámca MOBAK a sprievodných podporných nástrojov vo forme podpornej metodickej príručky, pripravenej na implementáciu v konkrétnych vzdelávacích situáciách na podporu žiakov s ďalšími potrebami v základných pohybových kompetenciách. Keďže cieľom súboru nástrojov prípravy učiteľov je podporiť a uľahčiť implementáciu metodickej príručky pre učiteľov (Scheuer & Heck, 2020) založenej na koncepte a meraní MOBAK (Herrmann, 2018), odkaz na podpornú metodickú príručku MOBAK je uvedený v tomto dokumente.
