A typical constructional solution for load bearing elements at the intersection between steel and concrete in high-rise- as well as multi-storey-buildings is the anchor plate in steel. Tests on the positive effects of reinforcement in constructions with small edge distances such as columns and wall edges show that the design solutions still can be improved compared to the regulations in technical approvals. The ambition of this research is the determination of the load flux between anchor plate, concrete and reinforcement, improved design and use of shear/tension hanger reinforcement, reduction of allowable edge distances and increase of allowable load in combination with reinforcement. Tests with different topologies of anchor plates and concrete structures were conducted. Explored are the ultimate forces in correlation to edge distance, anchorage reinforcement and load eccentricity. These forces are compared to ultimate allowable forces which are calculated according to current technical approvals for headed studs. [less ▲]

Steel structures in the marine environment like Steel Sheet Pile walls at quays and harbors, undergo continuous corrosion subjected to prolong sea water environment. The design of these steel structures currently is been practiced by using respective national annexure in alliance with the Eurocodes. But the correct statistical properties which fit into the semi-probabilistic safety concept of the Eurocodes still have to be determined. Steel Sheet pile retaining walls will obligatorily be analyzed according to the Eurocodes on and after the year 2010 [1]. Eurocodes 1 and 3 for load assumptions and structural steel design are introduced to various countries by building authorities even now. The work on Eurocodes 1997-1:2004 has been recently completed; to focus on the harmonization of all the national annexures and an economical design of steel sheet piles must guaranteed remain. The current paper highlights mainly upon the difference in the design aspects with special consideration to the usage of partial safety factor dealt in the Eurocodes, versus using initial practice of the respective national annexure and various geotechnical factors affecting the same. Analytical examples of typical cross sections of sheet piles will be evaluated using annexure and in conjunction with Eurocode and FEM packages. [less ▲]

Welded shear studs in composite bridges are subjected to statical as well as fatigue loading. To proof the fatigue resistance, the so-called Wöhler curves (S-N curves) have been established. The slip displacements in these bridges between concrete slab and steel girder however show that, the loading on the studs is more displacement than force controlled. Results on displacement-controlled fatigue push-out tests on shear studs are presented to describe the correlation between slip and bearable load cycles with the Manson-Coffin equation and the correlation between shear forces and slip with the Ramberg-Osgood equation. Both relations are combined to obtain an assessment of internal forces as well as displacements for the verification of the fatigue resistance. [less ▲]

In the last years composite structures got more and more important for office as well as high rise buildings. Many test programs where started to study the load bearing behavior of these structures. This paper concentrates on the stiffness behaviour of composite connections, the connecting link between beams or column and beam. The presented analysing model aims in determining the stiffness of composite connections in a practical manner. Therefore a new variable – the non-dimensional spring stiffness – is introduced. The non-dimensional stiffness is a characteristic value for one kind of composite connections, for example joints with endplates or joints with fins. The determination of the non-dimensional stiffness is based on the evaluation of 59 test results. [less ▲]

Statistical channel models are attractive for their simplicity but sometimes lack in precision. In to improve modelling accuracy, statistical model parameters, which are dependent on the environment, are extended to include spatial and temporal correlation. In outdoor scenarios these parameters are assumed constant over large areas of several wavelengths hence the name large scale parameters. This paper studies the large scale fading (LSF) and the applicability of bringing this previously used outdoor variable to the indoor case. The impacts of the model of the LSF on the outdoor system-performance have been studied and several relevant models have been proposed for outdoor cases. We present the intra-site autocorrelation as well as the inter-site cross correlation of the LSF for an indoor channel. The results are based on two separate measurement campaigns conducted at KTH, Stockholm and TUI, Ilmenau, using a single mobile station (MS) and multiple base stations (BSs) to investigate such models. We observe that the areas under which the LSF could be assumed constant are, in indoor scenarios, so small that it can be assumed independent from one local area to another. Furthermore, we find results that point towards the existence of inter-site correlation in some specific scenarios. [less ▲]
