In the past years, more and more young migrants from third countries have arrived to Europe. While the economies of ageing European societies can profit from an influx of young people in their labour market, the integration of young third-country nationals poses also challenges both to individuals and societies. The integration of young migrants is a dynamic process that encompasses developmental and adaptive processes at multiple levels and over time. In particular young migrants in vulnerable conditions might be at risk for social exclusion. In order to understand the factors that foster or hinder integration, it is therefore particularly important to analyze the ingroup-outgroup processes involved here from a societal, institutional and individual perspective. The present study is part of the larger EU-funded H2020 MIMY project (EMpowerment through liquid Integration of Migrant Youth in vulnerable conditions) which involves 13 multinational and interdisciplinary partners to study the integration processes of young non-EU migrants across 9 countries (Luxembourg, Germany, United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Poland, Romania, and Hungary). The MIMY project applies a mixed methods approach, including secondary data analysis as well as qualitative data from young migrants and their parents, from host society nationals and stakeholders through narrative, biographical and expert interviews as well as focus groups. For the present contribution, we will concentrate on qualitative data collected in Luxembourg. More precisely, drawing on focus group interviews regarding the challenges and resources in the integration processes of migrant youth, we will analyze here the ingroup-outgroup processes as described by migrant youth themselves as well as by migrant parents of adolescents/emerging adults living in Luxembourg. We will in particular identify processes of social identity, intergroup attitudes and patterns of social contact. Thereby, a special focus will be put on the experiences of social inclusion/exclusion and host societal attitudes toward migrants as experienced by our study participants. Our results will be discussed in relation to current integration policies, and ideas for an improvement of the situation of young migrants in Luxembourg and Europe will be formulated. [less ▲]

This study aimed to adapt and present evidence of construct, convergent, and discriminant validity of the Academic and Ath letic Identity Scale for the Brazilian context. A total of 303 Brazilian university students participated in the research (M=23.33 years, SD=4.60). The sample completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Academic and Athletic Identity Scale, the Professional Identity Scale, and the Flourishing Scale. Confirmatory factorial analysis showed the Brazilian version of the AAIS fully reproduced the original structure of the instrument. The dimensions academic identity and athletic identity showed a significant correlation between them (r=0.205, p<0.001). The academic identity dimension also showed significant correla tion with professional identity (r=0.354, p<0.001) and flourishing (r=0.269, p<0.001), while athletic identity did not show any significant correlation with professional identity and flourishing. The results showed that the psychometric properties of the AAIS-Br recommend its use in investigations to evaluate the degree of identification with academic and athletic roles in Brazilian university student-athletes. The Policy Brief opposite is based on the results of the SOCAMI project, which was drawn up on the basis of secondary analysis of European and national data concerning the socio-professional integration of young migrants, as well as qualitative data collected as part of this study. Indeed, twelve biographical interviews were conducted by the researchers involved in the project with young migrants who had been living in Luxembourg for more than five years. This analysis was completed by eight expert interviews with representatives of organisations working with young people and/or migrants in various fields. These different analyses made it possible, on the one hand, to develop relevant indicators to measure the acquisition of social capital by young migrants and, on the other hand, to identify the structural obstacles to the social integration of this group. Based on these results, this document makes a number of recommendations for governmental and non-governmental organisations working with young people and/or migrants. [less ▲]

The SOCAMI project focuses on the importance of social ties in the integration pathways of young migrants from third countries in Luxembourg. Youth is a period rich in learning where social identities and feelings of belonging to a social group are developed. In this sense, the analysis of the role of social ties in the integration of young migrants is essential. In particular, the ties that young migrants establish with residents of their host country may endure in the future and should therefore be considered relevant in the formation of their social relationships. However, young migrants often find themselves in vulnerable situations linked to job insecurity or, more broadly, marginalisation within the host society. Thus, it is mainly the relationships fostered by youth organisations, governmental or non-governmental, formal or informal, that play a central role in the preparation of young migrants for adult life. The overall aim of this study is to understand, investigate, explain and scientifically formulate the role of social capital in the integration of young migrants residing in Luxembourg. [less ▲]
