[more ▼] The concept of ‘subjectivation’ is commonly used in the social sciences and humanities, but its meaning is often less than clear. The paper disambiguates different uses of subjectivation in poststructuralist sociology and interpretative sociology by showing how they draw from the terminologies of subjectivity subjection, and subjectness. A relational framework for the study of subjectivation is introduced, highlighting conceptual concerns in subjectivation research: affectivity, materiality, and agency, which together allow the authors to focus on a concept of the “subject of rights”. Subjectivation research explores the relationship amongst social theory, reflections of the modern self, and empirical analyses of subject formations. Drawing on these empirical analyses of interactions between subjects and instances of subjectivation, this volume highlights how subjects can ‘talk back’. Readers are introduced to theoretical foundations, methodological approaches as well as empirically based theories on subjectivation in contemporary societies. [more ▼] The article elaborates on the emergence of a new social category: the “worker incapable of working”, which has not yet been recognized in the scientific literature. In Germany, people excluded from the labour market are increasingly employed in workshops for people with disabilities due to what is defined as a total incapacity to work. In addition to the objective of labour market participation of people with disabilities, these workshops assume the aim of (re)establishing their performance and monitoring their reintegration into the general labour market. Changes in the profiles of people working in the workshops and their recent expansion are described, as well as the transformation of working processes and conditions, especially through digitalisation. The consequences of these transformations are studied within the framework of “activating” policies. [more ▼] This paper traces how the endeavour to influence welfare state addressees’ sense of self through ›activating‹ labor market policies is reflected in the biographical action and account of self of a long-term unemployment benefits recipient. It is based on a qualitative longitudinal case study using a combination of discourse, institutional and biographical analysis (›subjectivation analysis‹). The exem- plary case study explores the shift away from the type of the social democratic welfare citizen towards the type of the liberal ›enterprising‹ subject demanded by the interpellations of the activating welfare state. The analysis demonstrates the methodological potential of subjectivation analysis by proving that while the subjects addressed by such interpellations do make the institutional demands and require- ments their own, this form of appropriation does not conform to the aims of active labour market pol- icy; it remains selective and can lead to a ›de-moralisation‹ of the individual’s relationship with the state, a loss of societal solidarity, and to social withdrawal. [more ▼] With this special issue, we aim to address visibility not just as a representation of the social, but as an aspect and element of social and cultural orders and actions sui generis. The texts in this volume are dedicated to understanding the practices, power relations and the technological infrastructures in which (audio)-visual practices unfold. To make our proposition clear, we lay out a methodological strategy that we—drawing from French, German and Anglo-Saxon debate—call sociology with the image. Then we provide an overview of the articles in this special issue and point to some ongoing tensions within qualitative inquiry more broadly.
