The highest transparency in glass facades is obtained with point fitted glass units. Point fitted insulating glass units minimize thermal bridging and lead to glass facades with better energy efficiency. Though, insufficient knowledge is present to offer a design method for point fittings in insulating glass. Therefore research has been carried out to extend the existing SLG-design-method (Linear superposition of local and global stress components) of Beyer for point fitted single and laminated glass to insulation glass units. This paper presents the first results of this research campaign. Load bearing tests on point fittings in single glazing have been conducted. A finite element model of the point fitting is calibrated by strain comparison. A test campaign for the deviation of a material law for silicone, used as secondary sealant in the edge seal system, is presented. The verified FE-model is implemented in a selected insulation glass unit, and the influence of the edge distance of the point fitting, as well as the edge bond stiffness and geometry on the stress peak at the borehole is investigated. In addition, the size of the so called ‘local area’ is adjusted for insulation glass units. [less ▲]

Office buildings account for a large portion of the total energy consumption in Europe because due to increased comfort requirements almost all recent buildings are air-conditioned. This project is focused on the influence of thermal storage capacity of commonly used structure types of office buildings and different technical strategies on energy efficiency and thermal comfort. The technical parameter ventilation strategy is essential compared to the parameters structure type or window-to-wall ratio. Additionally a lighting control system based on solar radiation shows a high influence on the internal gains and in consequence on the overheating hours. The slab type respectively the accessibiltiy of the thermal mass has a significantly higher influence than the differences of “massivity” between solid and light weight structures. [less ▲]

An insulating glass unit (IGU) reacts to a change in temperature or barometric pressure with a change of its cavity’s gas pressure. This leads to the so called “climate loading” of the glass panes, which can be considered in the structural analysis for each pane as an external load, acting on both adjacent glass panes. In addition, an external loading onto the exterior pane, like a wind- or snow load, is distributed to all glass panes of the IGU due to mechanical coupling effects of the encapsulated gas between the panes. Glass breakage and/or demolished edge bonds may be caused. In this paper, an extension of an existing load model for linear supported IGUs to IGUs with point fittings is presented. The extended load model considers beyond the coupling of the two panes via the encapsulated gas, the abolition of the pinned edges’ frame condition, which is replaced by (a) the coupling of the free edges via the edge bond and (b) the insertion of the point fittings. The push-out test as proposed in EN 1994-1-1 originally was developed for solid slabs and not for composite slabs with additional steel sheeting. It leads to a load-slip behaviour of headed shear stud connectors which differs from the behaviour in the real beam. In particular, the vertical forces and negative bending moments of the composite slab at its support are ignored by this setup. Within the European research project “Development of improved shear connection rules in composite beams (DISCCO)” a total of 70 push-out tests was performed to investigate a more realistic push-out test setup. The influence of the transverse loading was investigated to develop a standard push-out test when additional steel sheeting is used. The test regime used to apply transverse loads in this investigation is described and the results of 10 push-out tests with 80 mm deep steel sheeting with pairs of 19 mm diameter headed shear stud connectors are presented. The observed bearing capacities of the shear connectors were over-predicted by the empirical reduction factor given in EN 1994-1-1 and the 6 mm criterion was not always satisfied, especially when no or only low transverse loads were applied. The application of transverse loads improved the ductility of headed shear stud connectors and the bearing capacity increased by up to 41%. [less ▲]

Silicone elastomers are amongst others employed in glass façades as structural connection materials. They are known to be durable adhesives, able to transfer forces under variable loading and atmospheric conditions during their design life. For the dimensioning of adhesive joints, numerical simulations are often used, especially for joints which exhibit large deformations and/or for complex geometries. However, silicones have strong non-linear material behaviour already at small strain deformations, are slightly compressible and show a time-depending behaviour. The current existing material laws do not allow for considering these effects properly in simulation, particularly for combined loading. Therefore a hyperelastic material law for silicones has been developed and validated, based on a strain energy function. For this purpose, test series have been carried out to determine all relevant material parameters needed to describe the strain energy potential, namely tension, compression, shear and multi-axial oedometric test series on non-aged and artificially aged specimens. Furthermore, the softening due to low cyclic loading (Mullins’ effect) has been considered and quantified by comparison to quasi-static loading for all test series. The developed hyperelastic model has been implemented into the finite element software Abaqus® for validation and the results of numerical simulations have been compared to experimental results and existing laws. The comparison showed that the proposed model better matched the real behaviour of silicone elastomers and led to an increase in exactness of the numerical simulations of adhesive joints. [less ▲]

The pressure in the market of high-rise and multistory office buildings is stimulating innovative solutions for the design of structural systems fulfilling the demand for flexible, sustainable floor layouts. Steel-concrete composite constructions do comply with related challenges. They offer a wide range of structural solutions to design economic, efficient and sustainable buildings. New composite slabs with sheets of up to 220 mm height are able to span up to 9 m without any intermediate support. These sheets can further be placed on the lower flange of the steel beam to reduce the slab thickness in order to build a "Slim-Floor System". By activating composite action for slim-floor beams due to recent innovations grid spans of about 10 x 14 m are enabled, permitting a huge flexibility in the architectural floor layout. Further the design of composite connection provides significant potential for structural optimization. This potential is outlined and design guidance for simplified and sustainable composite design is given. [less ▲]

The highest transparency of façades is to be obtained by the use of point-fitted glass units. To comply with the demand for energy efficiency the use of insulating glass units is required. However, insufficient knowledge is present for point fittings in insulating glass which is a drawback of this kind of construction. Therefore research has been carried out to extend an existing design-method, the SLG-method, to insulating glass. In this paper, first, experimental investigations in point-fitted single glass units and the results are presented. Secondly, a numerical model is introduced which has been calibrated to this test data. This model will subsequently be extended to other geometries and the stress peaks at the borehole as well as the size of the local area for the SLG-method will be determined. Therefore this paper presents the preparation process for the application of the SLG-method for insulation glass units. [less ▲]

The demand for economic and eco-efficient solutions in construction industry is particularly enforcing efficient design and construction methods. The design of composite construction according to the plastic hinge theory in combination with semi-rigid joints provides one contemporary promising answer to these demands. This combination enables to mobilize almost all cross section- and system reserves. However, the capability for redistribution of the bending moment from internal support to mid-span, to activate these system reserves, requires sufficient rotation capacity of the composite beam and, especially, the connections. This paper presents design guidance on plastic and robust design of composite beams with semi-rigid composite connections with special focus on the influence of the reinforcement (ratio, diameter and type). With the provision of an engineering logic, new opportunities to design elegant and slender structures are given to engineers in a simple way. [less ▲]

Adhesive point-fixings are being used more frequently because of their numerous advantages compared to traditional bolted connections, such as a better load introduction, the absence of drilling holes in the glass and increased thermal performances. For the analysis of such fixings the use of finite element analyses is necessary. The adhesive properties in these finite element analyses are presented on the basis of stress-strain curves. The determination of the stress-strain curves is done by experimental testing on bulk material of the adhesive. With these tests the displacement rate reliance can also be studied. In this contribution, the fabrication and testing of test samples is described for two selected adhesives. The experimental data show that the selected adhesives behave stiffer under tension as the displacement rate is decreased. [less ▲]
