Luxembourg's relatively small surface area suggests that the service stations are all close to the border. However, there are disparities: in the interior of the country, the location of service stations depends for the most part on the geographical distribution of the population and the main transport network. The density of service stations is high in the region of Luxembourg City, the centre and main crossroads of the Grand Duchy where the A1, A3, A4 and A6 radial motorways converge, as well as in the densely populated areas of the south of the country, crossed from east to west by the A13. In the north of the country, however, where the population is lower and the transport infrastructure is still underdeveloped, there are fewer service stations. As the main road north of Ettelbruck is only a national road (N7), this region has no motorway access to neighbouring countries. The successive phase-out of coal mining in Western Europe implies not, that coal also loses their important role as energy-supplier. Local coal is just substituted by cheaper imported coal. Similarly, although three decades later, development in Eastern Europe occurs. In global scale, in the past years coal was the fastest growing energy source. The reserves of coal exceed those of other conventional energy sources by far. The future development of coal use depends mostly on the question if it works, to decrease the notably high, climate affecting CO2-output of the coal-fueled power generation by the development of clean-coal-technologies. [more ▼] Coal mining plays a special role in the creation of the Greater Region. After the Second World War, the Schuman Plan, which provided for mutual control of the production of coal and steel (important products for the conduct of the war) and the maintenance of these production factors, which were indispensable for reconstruction, led in 1951 to the signing of the ECSC Treaty (European Coal and Steel Community), which constituted the first stage in the construction of the European Union. The "Saar-Lor-Lux" region drawn up in 1969 by Hubertus Rolshoven, Chairman and CEO of Saarbergwerke AG, was the "preliminary stage" of the Greater Region institutionalised in 1980; this mining region was integrated into the cross-border triangle of Saarland, Lorraine and Luxembourg. [more ▼] In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Catholic Counter-Reformation attempted to regain lost ground and strengthen ecclesiastical authority. In Luxembourg, a southern province of the Netherlands ravaged by religious struggles and civil wars, the Society of Jesus worked to revive popular piety by developing the Marian cult. In 1624, Father Jacques Broquart erected a statue of the Virgin on the "glacis", in front of the walls of the Luxembourg fortress. The cult of the "Consoler of the Afflicted" spread rapidly, supported by accounts of miraculous cures and the articles of piety (pictures and medals) that the Jesuit fathers distributed. The map shows the veneration of Our Lady of Luxembourg (Virgin Consoler of the Afflicted or Consolatrix Afflictorum) from the 17th century onwards through the example of the chapels, altars and statues dedicated to her. [more ▼] Since the beginning of the 15th century, glassmaking has been one of the most important and dynamic production sectors in the Greater Region. Located in the heart of Europe and divided between German and French influences, the glassworks represented (and still represent today) a major geopolitical stake. Despite conditions made difficult by successive wars and border shifts, some of the most important glass and crystal factories in Europe in terms of size, activity and innovation were created from the 18th century onwards. It is an example of the results of the FNR project "Luxemburgischer Familiennamenatlas". The Lorraine region has not yet been studied. The aim of the "Luxemburgischer Familiennamenatlas" (LFA) is to document the distribution of surnames in Luxembourg and neighbouring regions, in order to draw possible conclusions about the history of language and settlement and about historical language contact phenomena. The study also attempts to determine which surnames are typical for Luxembourg and, if applicable, how these names differ from those of the other regions studied. Its influence was such that the cult was exported to the regions bordering the duchy. In 1626, the miraculous healing of Jacques Brocquart, who was suffering from the plague, caused such a stir that pilgrims flocked from the four corners of the duchy to ask for a divine favour, even before the chapel was completed. The aim of the map is to highlight the spatial dimension of the reports on the miracles of Notre Dame de Luxembourg during the first half of the 17th century.
