[more ▼] The digital exhibition Éischte Weltkrich: Remembering the Great War in Luxembourg is a project developed by the C2DH, the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History at the University of Luxembourg, with the aim of addressing an important but neglected and understudied period in the country’s history, the First World War. Supported by the Ministry of State and drawing on the collections and expertise of some of the major Luxembourg museums, archives and cultural institutions, the project has progressively deepened and widened its scope, aspiring to become a long-term digital resource. The website is designed to engage a broad base of users with varying interests and degrees of expertise. It offers four independent but interconnected modes of navigation: a thematic, story-driven mode; a digital archive; an interactive geo-referenced map and a timeline. Additional sections of the website contain educational pages for schools and downloadable academic articles. The overall structure of the exhibition remains flexible and open so that it can be constantly enriched with new material, whether provided by institutions or crowdsourced. By retracing important disciplinary traditions and by reflecting on the impact that various "turns" in humanities had on media historical scholarship, the author identifies central concepts, methodological approaches, and thematic focal points that characterize the field. Finally, new challenges of doing media history in the digital age - such as transmedia storytelling and media convergence are discussed. [more ▼] This video documents the authors’ journey back to the origins of transnational television in Europe. Inspired by the idea of experimental media archaeology (EMA), the trip to original locations of the transnational media event known as ‘Paris-week’ in 1952 illustrates a new approach to media historiography, which aims to sensitize television historians for the material remains, topography and physical spaces of early television transmissions. Readers /viewers are invited to watch the different episodes of the authors’ journey by clicking on the figures. [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 160 (22 UL) Kino, Radio und Zeitung als Taktgeber. [more ▼] A multitude of devices and technological tools now exist to make, share, and store memories and moments with family, friends, and even strangers. Memory practices such as home movies, which originated as the privilege of a few, well-to-do families, have now emerged as ubiquitous and immediate cultures of sharing. Departing from the history of home movies, this volume offers a sophisticated understanding of technologically mediated, mostly ritualized memory practices, from early beginnings in the fin-de-siècle to today. Departing from a longue durée perspective on home movie practices, Materializing Memories moves beyond a strict historical study to grapple with highly theorized fields, such as media studies, memory studies, and science and technology studies (STS). The contributors to this volume reflect on these different intellectual backgrounds and perspectives, but all chapters share a common framework by addressing practices of use, user configurations, and relevant media landscapes. Grasping the cultural dynamics of such multi-faceted practices requires a multidimensional conceptual approach, here achieved by centering around three concepts as central analytical lenses: dispositifs, generations, and amateurs. [more ▼] The aim of this chapter is to outline experimental media archaeology as an alternative method to a sense and object-oriented technology and media historiography. The epistemological potential of an object and sense-oriented experimental access to the fijield of the history of media and technology will be discussed here on the basis of experiences in the history of science and historically informed music performances. The heart of the chapter is formed by a discussion of a series of media archaeological experiments executed by the authors in search for alternative ways to draft historical statements on past media practices. In these experiments, they focus on the materiality of past-media devices, beyond their function as sign and evidence of the past, and on the heuristic possibilities offfered by an experimental approach to these devices. [more ▼] ‘Changes were in the air’ – is perhaps the best way to describe the social mood at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. On the international stage, the gap between the post-war generation, known as the ‘baby boomers’ and the generation that had experienced World War II as adolescents or young adults came to light in the form of student protests, anti-war movements and new concepts of life. It is scarcely a coincidence that there were protests in eastern Belgium too at this time. What were the ‘young wild ones’ protesting against in the German speaking region of Belgium? Based on a generational approach, this article aims at contextualizing the autonomy-debate in the late 1960s and early 1970s by focusing on a historical investigation into a few young people in the Eifel region that would strike new political tones with lasting influence on the political landscape as well as on the social or cultural environment of eastern Belgium.
