Determining the purpose of trips brings is a fundamental information to evaluate travel demand during the day and to predict longer-term impacts on the population’s travel behavior. The concept of tours is the most suited to consider the value of a daily scheduling of individuals and travel interdependencies. However, the meticulous care required for both collecting data of high quality and interpret results of advanced demand models are frequently considered as major drawbacks. The objective of this study is to incorporate into a standard trip-based model some inherent concepts of activity-based models in order to enhance the representation of travel behavior. The main focus of this work is to infer, employing utility theory, the trip purpose of a population, at a zonal level. Making use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo, a set of parameters is estimated in order to retrieve tour-based primitives of the demand. The main advantage of this methodology is the low requirements in terms of data, as no individual information are used, and the good interpretation of the model. Estimated parameters of the priors set a utility-based probability function for departure time, which allows to have a dynamic overview of the demand. In order to account for the tour consistency of travel decisions, a duration constraint is added to the model. The proposed model is applied to the region of Luxembourg city and the results show the potential of the methodologies for dividing an observed demand based on the activity at destination. [less ▲]

In this paper we analyze the impact of using cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS) to manage electrical bus systems. A simulation-based study is presented where three control strategies are used to regulate the operations of a line, namely bus holding, Green Light Optimal Dwell Time Adaptation (GLODTA) and Transit Signal Priority (TSP). The results show, using a realistic scenario of a major line in Luxembourg City, that buses are efficiently operated without necessarily providing additional priority to public transport, hence without negatively affecting the capacity of the private vehicles system. Benefits in terms of headway regulations, energy consumption and travel time variance reductions are quantified. [less ▲]

The extraction of high-resolution, Digital Elevation Models (DEM) from very high-resolution (VHR) optical satellite imagery, as well as low altitude drone images by Photogrammetric methods or modern Structure from Motion (SFM) engines, has rapidly matured. Today both data sources are representing cost-effective alternatives to dedicated airborne sensors, especially for remote and difficult to access regions. Ever-growing archives of high-resolution Satellite imagery, are providing a rich data source which covers even the most remote locations with high-resolution imagery up to 0.30m ground sample distance multiple times enabling the generation of high-resolution DEMS. Furthermore, low-cost, low weight and easy to use drones can easily be deployed in remote regions and capture limited areas with very high resolution. Dense point clouds derived from this method provide an invaluable data source to fill the gap between globally available low-resolution DEMs and highly accurate terrestrial surveys. The presented case study investigates the use of VHR archive imagery as well as low-cost drone imagery to generate high-quality DEMs using photogrammetric tools over a remote region which is difficult to access by manned airborne platforms. We highlight the potential and limitations of both data sources to provide high resolution, accurate elevation data. [less ▲]

The modelling of a legal text into a machine-processable form, such as a list of logic formulæ, enables a semi-automatic reasoning about legal compliance but might entail some anticipation of legal interpretation in the modelling. The formulæ need therefore to be validated by legal experts, but it is unlikely that they are familiar with the formalism used. This calls for an interdisciplinary validation methodology to ensure that the model is legally coherent with the text it aims to represent but that could also close the communication gap between formal modellers and legal evaluators. This paper discusses such a methodology, providing an human-readable representation that preserves the formulæ's meaning but that presents them in a way that is usable by non-experts. We exemplify the methodology on a use case where Articles of the GDPR are translated in the Reified I/O logic encoded in LegalRuleML. [less ▲]

We consider the problem of optimally determining the sequence of electric and hybrid buses departing from a multi-line bus terminal, considering both service constraints (schedule adherence) and energy constraints (electric bus charging status, bus recharging scheduling in capacitated facilities). The problem is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Program, with the objective of minimizing the total operational cost for the bus lines in question. System dynamics are captured by practical sets of constraints, ranging from scheduling adherence to discharge- recharge dynamics. Individual operational costs at the bus level and at the trip level are fully parametrized, allowing for extensive sensitivity analysis. We investigate a real-life case study based on the city of Luxembourg, where two charging stations have been installed in the central station’s bus terminal. Experimental results show that, while full electrification is indeed possible, the required fleet size depends strongly on the given line(s) timetable. [less ▲]

Objectives: In this study, we review the evidence and discuss how the digitalization affects the CHWs programs for tackling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs). Methods: We conducted a review of literature covering two databases: PubMED and Embase. A total of 97 articles were abstracted for full text review of which 21 are included in the analysis. Existing theories were used to construct a conceptual framework for understanding how digitalization affects the prospects of CHW programs for NCDs. Results: We identified three benefits and three challenges of digitalization. Firstly, it will help improve the access and quality of services, notwithstanding its higher establishment and maintenance costs. Secondly, it will add efficiency in training and personnel management. Thirdly, it will leverage the use of data generated across grass-roots platforms to further research and evaluation. The challenges posed are related to funding, health literacy of CHWs, and systemic challenges related to motivating CHWs. More than 60 digital platforms were identified, including mobile based networking devices (used for behavioral change communication), Web-applications (used for contact tracking, reminder system, adherence tracing, data collection, and decision support), videoconference (used for decision support) and mobile applications (used for reminder system, supervision, patients’ management, hearing screening, and tele-consultation). Conclusion: The digitalization efforts of CHW programs are afflicted by many challenges, yet the rapid technological penetration and acceptability coupled with the gradual fall in costs constitute encouraging signals for the LMICs. Both CHWs interventions and digital technologies are not inexpensive, but they may provide better value for the money. [less ▲]

The geometric approach is used to evaluate the security and vulnerability level of the controlled system. The presented work deals with the so-called false data injection attacks and shows how imperfectly known disturbances can be used to perform undetectable, or at least stealthy, attacks that can make the NCS vulnerable to attacks from malicious outsiders. We are a team of engineers working on a concrete project of Mobility in Luxembourg. We want to solve the problem of optimally determining the sequence of electric and hybrid electric buses, considering both service constraints (schedule adherence) and energy constraints (electric bus charging status, bus recharging scheduling in capacitated facilities) and at the same time ensure a high level of quality of service for the user satisfaction. The problem is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Program, with the objective of minimizing the total operational cost for the bus lines in question. System dynamics are captured by twenty sets of constraints, ranging from scheduling adherence to discharge-recharge dynamics. Individual operational costs at the bus level (cost of running an electric / non-electric bus per km, cost of recharging) and at the trip level (penalty due to failed schedule adherence) are fully parametrised, allowing for extensive sensitivity analysis. We investigate a real-life case study based in the city of Luxembourg, where the objective is to reach the all-electric mode for principal urban buses network. Through the model we investigate: the minimum amount of electric buses necessary to perform a day’s schedule for two currently partially electrified lines, without resorting to conventional internal combustion alternatives; the impact of electrifying two additional lines, specifically considering the trade-offs related to either adding new buses or new charging stations at the bus terminal. Finally, we studied how to best decompose the overall problem in several smaller problems, to be able to solve also realistic scenarios and using large real data sets from the Mobility Data owner of Luxembourg. We analysed and compared two kinds of decomposition: a bus line-based decomposition, and a time-based decomposition. [less ▲]

Smart and optimal energy consumption in electric vehicles has high potential to improve the limited cruising range on a single battery charge. The proposed concept is a semi-autonomous ecological advanced driver assistance system which predictively plans for a safe and energy-efficient cruising velocity profile autonomously for battery electric vehicles. However, high entropy in transportation network leads to a challenging task to derive a computationally efficient and tractable model to predict the traffic flow. Stochastic optimal control has been developed to systematically find an optimal decision with the aim of performance improvement. However, most of the developed methods are not real-time algorithms. Moreover, they are mainly risk-neutral for safety-critical systems. This paper investigates on the real-time risk-sensitive nonlinear optimal control design subject to safety and ecological constraints. This system improves the efficiency of the transportation network at the microscopic level. Obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of states regulation and constraints satisfaction. [less ▲]

In the setting of peri-urban motorway systems, coordination of various kinds of controllers must however be accompanied by accurate prediction of both propagation of flows and queues in the network, as well as the users’ response in terms of route choice. In this paper, we showcase through a real-life case study how coordination and prediction are both essential when performing hybrid urban-motorway control. Simulation results of a Model Predictive Control application are compared to simpler local control approaches, and the impact of coordinated intersection control and, additionally, Ramp Metering is evaluated. A specific class of energy harvester devices for renewable energy resources allows conversion of ambient fluid flow energy to electrical energy via flow-induced vibrations of a piezo-ceramic composite structure positioned in the flow field. This energy converter technology simultaneously involves the interaction of a composite structure and a surrounding fluid, the electric charge accumulated in the piezo-ceramic material and a controlling electrical circuit. In order to predict the efficiency and operational properties of such future devices and to increase their robustness and performance, a mathematical and numerical model of the complex physical system is required to allow systematic computational investigation of the involved phenomena and coupling characteristics. The presentation will discuss a monolithic modelling approach that allows simultaneous analysis of the harvester, which involves surface-coupled fluid-structure interaction, volume-coupled electro-mechanics and a controlling energy harvesting circuit. Based on a finite element discretisation of the weighted residual form of the governing equations, time- and frequency-domain analysis enables investigation of different types of structures (plate, shells) subject to exterior/interior flow with varying parameters, and attached electrical circuits with respect to the electrical power output generated. Consequently, options for parametric reduced-order modelling of flow-driven energy harvesters will be discussed. [less ▲]

Ever improving low cost, lightweight and easy to use sensing technologies are enabling the capture of rich 3D Datasets to support an unprecedented range of applications in Geosciences. Especially low-cost LiDAR systems as well as optical sensors, which can be deployed from terrestrial or low altitude aerial platforms, allow the collection of large datasets without detailed expert knowledge or training. Dense pointcloud derived from these technologies provide an invaluable source to fill the gap between highly precise and accurate terrestrial topographic surveys and large area Digital Surface Models (DSMs) derived from airborne and spaceborne sensors. However, the collection of reliable 3D pointclouds in remote and hazardous locations remains to be very difficult and costly. Establishing a reliable georeference, ensuring accuracy and data quality as well as merging such rich datasets with existing or space borne mapping provide additional challenges. The presented case study investigates the data quality and integration of a heterogeneous dataset collected over the remote island of Tristan da Cunha. High-resolution 3D pointclouds derived by TLS and drone Photogrammetry are merged with space borne imagery while preserving the accurate georeference provided by Ground Control derived from geodetic observations. The volcanic island of Tristan da Cunha located in the centre of the Southern Atlantic Ocean is one of the most remote and difficult to access locations on the planet. Its remote location, rough climatic conditions and consistent cloud coverage provides exceptional challenges for terrestrial, aerial as well as space borne data acquisition. Amongst many other scientific installations, the island also hosts a continuous GNSS station observation and monitoring facilities operated by the University of Luxembourg, which provided the opportunity to conduct a local terrestrial data acquisition campaign consistent with a terrestrial ground survey, Laserscanning and an image acquisition from a low-cost drone. The highly accurate Ground Control network, observed by GNSS and total station, provides a reliable georeference. Pointclouds were acquired around the area of the harbour using a Leica P20 terrestrial Laserscanner, as well as drone Photogrammetry based on images collected by a low-cost DJI Phantom3 drone. To produce a map of the complete island a comprehensive dataset of high-resolution space borne imagery based on the Digital Globe WorldView constellation was acquired which provided high resolution mapping information. The case study presents a cross-validation of terrestrial, low altitude airborne as well as spaceborne datasets in terms coregistration, absolute georeference, scale, resolution and overall data quality. Following the evaluation a practical approach to fuse this heterogeneous dataset is applied which aims to preserve overall data quality, local resolution and accurate georeference and avoid edge artefacts. The conclusions drawn from our preliminary results provide some good practice advice for similar projects. The final topographic dataset enables mapping and monitoring of local geohazards as, e.g. coastal erosion and recent landslides thus also supporting the local population. [less ▲]

Autonomous vehicles have the potential to fundamentally change existing transportation systems. Beyond legal concerns, these societal evolutions will critically depend on user acceptance. As an emerging mode of public transportation [7], Autonomous mobility on demand (AMoD) is of particular interest in this context. The aim of the present study is to identify the main components of acceptability (before first use) and acceptance (after first use) of AMoD, following a user experience (UX) framework. To address this goal, we conducted three workshops (N=14) involving open discussions and a ride in an experimental autonomous shuttle. Using a mixed-methods approach, we measured pre-immersion acceptability before immersing the participants in an on-demand transport scenario, and eventually measured post-immersion acceptance of AMoD. Results show that participants were reassured about safety concerns, however they perceived the AMoD experience as ineffective. Our findings highlight key factors to be taken into account when designing AMoD experiences. [less ▲]

Twitter users often crave more followers to increase their social popularity. While a variety of factors have been shown to attract the followers, very little work has been done to analyze the mechanism how Twitter users follow or unfollow each other. In this paper, we apply game theory to modeling the follow-unfollow mechanism on Twitter. We first present a two-player game which is based on the Prisoner’s Dilemma, and subsequently evaluate the payoffs when the two players adopt different strategies. To allow two players to play multiple rounds of the game, we propose a multi-stage game model. We design a Twitter bot analyzer which follows or unfollows other Twitter users by adopting the strategies from the multi-stage game. We develop an algorithm which enables the Twitter bot analyzer to automatically collect and analyze the data. The results from analyzing the data collected in our experiment show that the follow-back ratios for both of the Twitter bots are very low, which are 0.76% and 0.86%. This means that most of the Twitter users do not cooperate and only want to be followed instead of following others. Our results also exhibit the effect of different strategies on the follow-back followers and on the non-following followers as well. [less ▲]

In abstract argumentation theory, multiple argumentation semantics have been proposed that allow to select sets of jointly acceptable arguments from a given set of arguments based on the attack relation between arguments. The existence of multiple argumentation semantics raises the question which of these semantics predicts best how humans evaluate arguments, possibly depending on the thematic con- text of the arguments. In this study we report on an empirical cognitive study in which we tested how humans evaluate sets of arguments de- pending on the abstract structure of the attack relation between them. Two pilot studies were performed to validate the intended link between argumentation frameworks and sets of natural language arguments. The main experiment involved a group deliberation phase and made use of three different thematic contexts of the argument sets involved. The data strongly suggest that independently of the thematic contexts that we have considered, strong acceptance and strong rejection according to the CF2 and preferred semantics are a better predictor for human argument acceptance than the grounded semantics (which is identical to strong acceptance/rejection with respect to complete semantics). Furthermore, the data suggest that CF2 semantics predicts human argument acceptance better than preferred semantics, but the data for this comparison is limited to a single thematic context. Dual- grid multiscale couplings have been recently used to address different engineering problems involving the interaction between granular phases and complex fluid flows. Nevertheless, previous studies did not focus on the parallel performance of such a coupling and were, therefore, limited to relatively small applications. In this contribution, we propose an insight into the performance of the dual-grid multiscale DEM-VOF method for three- phase flows when operated in parallel. In formal (abstract and structured) argumentation theory, a central notion is that of an attack between a counterargument and the argument that it is challenging. Unlike the notion of an inconsistency between two statements in classical logic, this notion of an attack between arguments can be asymmetric, i.e. an argument A can attack an argument B without B attacking A. While this property of the formal systems studied by argumentation theorist has been motivated by considerations about the human practice of argumentation in natural language, there have not been any systematic studies on the connection between the directionality of attacks in argumentation-theoretic formalisms and the way humans actually interpret conflicts between arguments in a non-symmetric way. In this paper, we report on the result of two empirical cognitive studies that aim at filling this gap, one study with ordinary adults (undergraduate students) and one study with adult experts in formal argumentation theory. We interpret the results in light of the notions and distinctions defined in the ASPIC+ framework for structured argumentation, and discuss the relevance of our findings to past and future empirical studies about the link between human argumentation and formal argumentation theory. Aim of this work is the comparison of different turbulent models based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations in order to find out which model is the most suitable for the study of the channel thermal-hydraulics of the TRIGA Mark II reactor. Only the steady state behaviour (i.e. the full power stationary operational conditions) of the reactor has been considered. To this end, the RAS (Reynolds-Averaged Simulation) models available in the open source CFD software OpenFOAM have been applied to the most internal channel of the TRIGA and assessed against a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model. The results of the latter approach, expressed in terms of axial velocity, turbulent viscosity, turbulent kinetic energy, and temperature have been compared with the results obtained by the RAS models available in OpenFOAM (k − ε, k − ω and Reynolds Stress Transport). Heat transfer is taken into account as well by means of the turbulent energy diffusivity parameter. The simulation results demonstrate how, amongst the RAS models, the k − ω SST is the one whose results are closer to the LES simulation. This model seems to be the best one for the treatment of turbulent flow within the TRIGA subchannel, offering a good compromise between accuracy and computational requirements. Since it is much less expensive than an LES model, it can be applied even to full core calculation, in order to obtain accurate results with less computational effort. [less ▲]

Networked digital sharing economy services enable the effective and efficient sharing of vehicles, housing, and everyday objects. However, contemporary online sharing platforms face several challenges related to the establishment of trust among peers, as well difficulties to deal with the growing number of intermediaries (e.g., payment, insurance) needed to ensure an adequate service delivery. We designed and developed "Just Share It" (JSI), an interactive system that enables the sharing of personal physical possessions (e.g., power tools, toys, sports gear) by directly connecting lenders and borrowers, as peers, through mobile technology. The JSI system utilizes a blockchain ledger and smart contracting technologies to improve peer trust and limit the number of required intermediaries, respectively. In this submission, we briefly review emergent challenges in this space, describe the JSI prototype system and its trust model, and reflect on future architectural opportunities for an eventual "in the wild" deployment. Object detection and tracking is a challenging task, especially for unmanned aerial robots in complex environments where both static and dynamic objects are present. It is, however, essential for ensuring safety of the robot during navigation in such environments. In this work we present a practical online approach which is based on a 2D LIDAR. Unlike common approaches in the literature of modeling the environment as 2D or 3D occupancy grids, our approach offers a fast and robust method to represent the objects in the environment in a compact form, which is significantly more efficient in terms of both memory and computation in comparison with the former. Our approach is also capable of classifying objects into categories such as static and dynamic, and tracking dynamic objects as well as estimating their velocities with reasonable accuracy. [less ▲]

Tracking control for robotic manipulators is required for numerous automation tasks in manufacturing engineering. For this purpose, model-free PD-controllers are largely implemented by default in commercially available robot arms and provide satisfactory performance for simple path following applications. Ever more complex automation tasks however ask for novel intelligent and adaptive tracking control strategies. In surface finishing processes, discontinuous freeform paths as well as changing constraints between the robotic end-effector and its surrounding environment affect the tracking control by undermining the stable system performance. The lacking knowledge of industrial robot dynamic parameters presents an additional challenge for the tracking control algorithms. In this paper the control problem of robotic manipulators with unknown dynamics and varying constraints is addressed. A robust sliding mode controller is combined with an RBF (Radial Basis Function) Neural Network-estimator and an intelligent, biomimetic BELBIC (Brain Emotional Learning-Based Intelligent Control) term to approximate the nonlinear robot dynamics function and achieve a robust and adaptive tracking performance. Time-series of high throughput gene sequencing data intended for gene regulatory network (GRN) inference are often short due to the high costs of sampling cell systems. Moreover, experimentalists lack a set of quantitative guidelines that prescribe the minimal number of samples required to infer a reliable GRN model. We study the temporal resolution of data vs.quality of GRN inference in order to ultimately overcome this deficit. The evolution of a Markovian jump process model for the Ras/cAMP/PKA pathway of proteins and metabolites in the G1 phase of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell cycle is sampled at a number of different rates. For each time-series we infer a linear regression model of the GRN using the LASSO method. The inferred network topology is evaluated in terms of the area under the precision-recall curve (AUPR). By plotting the AUPR against the number of samples, we show that the trade-off has a, roughly speaking, sigmoid shape. An optimal number of samples corresponds to values on the ridge of the sigmoid. Battery Electric Vehicles have high potentials for the modern transportations, however, they are facing limited cruising range. To address this limitation, we present a semi-autonomous ecological driver assistance system to regulate the velocity with energy-efficient techniques. The main contribution of this paper is the design of a real-time nonlinear receding horizon optimal controller to plan the online cost-effective cruising velocity. Instead of conventional L2-norms, a deadzone-quadratic penalty function for the nonlinear model predictive controller is proposed. Obtained field experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for a semi-autonomous electric vehicle in terms of real-time energy-efficient velocity regulation and constraints satisfaction. This paper presents the implementation and experimental validation of a central control framework. The presented framework addresses the need for a controller, which provides high performance combined with a low-computational load while being on-line adaptable to changes in the control scenario. Examples for such scenarios are cooperative control, task-based control and fault-tolerant control, where the system's topology, dynamics, objectives and constraints are changing. The framework combines a fast Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC), a communication interface with the Robot Operating System (ROS) [1] as well as a modularization that allows an event-based change of the NMPC scenario. To experimentally validate performance and event-based adaptability of the framework, this paper is using a cooperative control scenario of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Stochastic nonlinear model predictive control has been developed to systematically find an optimal decision with the aim of performance improvement in dynamical systems that involve uncertainties. However, most of the current methods are risk-neutral for safety-critical systems and depend on computationally expensive algorithms. This paper investigates on the risk-averse optimal stochastic nonlinear control subject to real-time safety-critical systems. In order to achieve a computationally tractable design and integrate knowledge about the uncertainties, bounded trajectories generated to quantify the uncertainties. The proposed controller considers these scenarios in a risk-sensitive manner. A certainty equivalent nonlinear model predictive control based on minimum principle is reformulated to optimise nominal cost and expected value of future recourse actions. The capability of proposed method in terms of states regulations, constraints fulfilment, and real-time implementation is demonstrated for a semi-autonomous ecological advanced driver assistance system specified for battery electric vehicles. This system plans for a safe and energy-efficient cruising velocity profile autonomously. [less ▲]

During working days, home and workplace are anchor locations shaping the daily mobility as well as the employee’s activity pattern. While past research has shown that workplace decentralization is often associated with higher car use for the commuting trip, little is known concerning the effect on activity-travel patterns as whole. The objective of this paper is to assess how workplace decentralization is affecting individuals’ daily activity space. A two-weeks travel diary has been filled by 43 employees of the University of Luxembourg, both before and after the relocation of their workplace. Using descriptive statistics, as well as Standard Deviational Ellipses (SDE) combined with a cluster analysis, results of this paper show that workers’ activity spaces, represented by the Standard Deviational Ellipses, have been importantly modified due to a relocation of a single anchor activity location, i.e. their workplace [less ▲]

The use of information and communication technologies for health constitutes a strategic ally to the sustainable development goals and attaining universal health coverage through enabling equitable access to high quality and affordable health care services. The omnipresence of mobile devices and sensors, the increasing availability of data and computational power, and the breakthroughs in imaging and genomics, are creating a perfect storm that is bound to transform health care profoundly. At the population level, the coordination of disease control and prevention programmes is facilitated, cost-effective interventions are implemented, and ultimately the quality of life of our communities is enhanced. EHealth also plays a significant role in the delivery of people-centred and integrated health services, empowers individuals to make informed decisions and self-manage their health needs. For the first time in history, the individual is placed at the centre, has timely and affordable access to data, knowledge and tools, and health care is tailored for his/her diverse background, context and needs. A second perspective to the digital revolution is how our own discipline is transformed. As technology is a catalyst for sustainable, large scale social change, health care has the opportunity to invest in inter-professional collaboration, and leverage a diverse range of expertise, stakeholders and resources to expand its horizons and tackle old and future challenges. In this paper, the authors present a Two-Step approach that sequentially adjusts generation and distribution values of the (dynamic) OD matrix. While the proposed methodology already provided excellent results for updating demand flows on a motorway, the aim of this paper is to validate this conclusion on a real network: Luxembourg City. This network represents the typical middle-sized European city in terms of network dimension. Moreover, Luxembourg City has the typical structure of a metropolitan area, composed of a city centre, ring, and suburb areas. An innovative element of this paper is to use mobile network data to create a time-dependent profile of the generated demand inside and outside the ring. To support the claim that the model is ready for practical implementation, it is interfaced with PTV Visum, one of the most widely adopted software tools for traffic analysis. Results of these experiments provide a solid empirical ground in order to further develop this model and to understand if its assumptions hold for urban scenarios. [less ▲]

Semi-autonomous driving assistance systems have a high potential to improve the safety and efficiency of the battery electric vehicles that are enduring limited cruising range. This paper presents an ecologically advanced driver assistance system to extend the functionality of the adaptive cruise control system. A real-time stochastic non-linear model predictive controller with probabilistic constraints is presented to compute on-line the safe and energy-efficient cruising velocity profile. The individual chance-constraint is reformulated into a convex second-order cone constraint which is robust for a general class of probability distributions. Finally, the performance of proposed approach in terms of states regulation, constraints fulfilment, and energy efficiency is evaluated on a battery electric vehicle. [less ▲]

In the present paper, a networked control system under both cyber and physical attacks is considered. An adapted formulation of the problem under physical attacks, data deception and false data injection attacks, is used for controller synthesis. Based on the classical fault tolerant detection (FTD) tools, a residual generator for attack/fault detection based on observers is proposed. An event-triggered and Bilinear Matrix Inequality (BMI) implementation is proposed in order to achieve novel and better security strategy. The purpose in using this implementation would be to reduce (limit) the total number of transmissions to only instances when the networked control system (NCS) needs attention. It is important to note that the main contribution of this paper is to establish the adequate event-triggered and BMI-based methodology so that the particular structure of the mixed attacked/faulty structure can be re-formulated within the classical FTD paradigm. Experimental results are given to illustrate the developed approach efficiency on a pilot three-tank system. The plant model is presented and the proposed control design is applied to the system. Nowadays, the personalized biomedical simulations demand real-time efficient and reliable method to alleviate the computational complexity of high-fidelity simulation. In such applications, the necessity of solving different substructure, e.g. tissues or organs, with different numbers of the degrees of freedom and of coupling the reduced order spaces for each substructure poses a challenge in the on-fly simulation. In this talk, this challenge is taken into account employing the Nitsche-based domain decomposition technique inside the reduced order model [1]. This technique with respect to other domain decomposition approach allows obtaining a solution with the same accuracy of underlying finite element formulation and to flexibly treat interface with non-matching mesh. The robustness of the coupling is determined by the penalty coefficients that is chosen using ghost penalty technique [2]. Furthermore, to reduce the computational complexity of the on-fly assembling it is employed the empirical interpolation approach proposed in [3]. Socially assistive robots, when used in a way that takes into consideration children’s needs and developmental characteristics, can be useful tools to enable children’s development. More specifically, due to their characteristics (predictability, simplicity, and repetition) robots can be especially helpful to teach emotional abilities to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Previous research has provided preliminary evidence that robots can help children improve in some domains such as joint attention and imitation. However, no studies have examined how robots can be integrated in intervention protocols targeting the acquisition of emotional abilities in children with ASD. This paper presents a work in progress on an emotional ability training developed for children with ASD using the QT socially assistive robot. This training aims to test whether children with ASD can benefit from a robot-mediated training to improve emotional ability. [less ▲]

One of the fundamental and most challenging problems in system biology is the reconstruction of gene regulatory networks from input-output data based on non-linear differential equations. This paper presents an approach to estimate the unknown nonlinearities and to identify the true network that generated the data, based on an error filtering learning scheme and a Lyapunov synthesis method. Unknown nonlinearities are modelled by networks using radial basis functions and model validation is performed by taking advantage of the so-called persistency of excitation of input signals, a condition that is shown to play a significant role in the problem of uncovering the true network structure. The proposed methodology and the theoretical results are validated through an illustrative example. [less ▲]

Autonomous navigation of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in cluttered environments is still a challenging problem. In this work, we present an approach based on graph slam and loop closure detection for online mapping of unknown outdoor environments using a small UAV. Here, we used an onboard front facing stereo camera as the primary sensor. The data extracted by the cameras are used by the graph-based slam algorithm to estimate the position and create the graph-nodes and construct the map. To avoid multiple detections of one object as different objects and to identify re-visited locations, a loop closure detection is applied with optimization algorithm using the g2o toolbox to minimize the error. Furthermore, 3D occupancy map is used to represent the environment. This technique is used to save memory and computational time for the online processing. Real experiments are conducted in outdoor cluttered and open field environments.The experiment results show that our presented approach works under real time constraints, with an average time to process the nodes of the 3D map is 17.79ms. This paper deals with the traffic signal control problem. More specifically it investigates the impact at a network level of simple dynamic local traffic control policies. A dynamic route swapping rule is adopted to model the behavioral response of the travellers to signal changes, while a dynamic signal control swapping rule based on an equi-pressure policy is used to implicitly consider the flow response within the control updating process. Results on a simple network show that the flow responsive control policy outperforms pre-timed control, as well as a more conventional local control policy based on signal equi-saturation. Numerical results show also that the swapping rule based on equi-pressure is less susceptible to local optima, to systematically improve total network throughput, and to increase its effectiveness with when demand increases. © 2017 IEEE. Explicitly including the dynamics of users' route choice behaviour in optimal traffic control applications has been of interest for researchers in the last five decades. This has been recognized as a very challenging problem, due to the added layer of complexity and the considerable non-convexity of the resulting problem, even when dealing with simple static assignment and analytical link cost functions. In this work we establish a direct behavioural connection between the different shapes and structures emerging in the solution space of such problems and the underlying route choice behaviour. We specifically investigate how changes in the active equilibrium route set exert direct influence on the solution space's structure and behaviour. In this case study we describe the iterative process of paper prototyping, using a board game, to co-design a location-based mobile application. The end goal of the application is to motivate reflection on historical topics about migration. The board game serves to capture the core concerns of this application by simulating movement through the city. Three play tests highlighted the users' interest and issues with the historical content, the way this content is represented, and the players' responses to the interactions and motivating mechanisms of the application. Results show that the board game helped capture important design preferences and problems, ensuring the improvement of our scenario. This feedback can help reduce development effort and implement a future technology prototype closer to the needs of our end users. [less ▲]

Battery powered electric buses have higher energy efficiency, lower emissions and noise when compared to buses with internal combustion engines. However, due to battery charging requirements, their large-scale integration into public transport operations is more complex. This study proposes a novel concept supporting said integration via new control strategies, dubbed e-GLOSA and e-GLODTA. These strategies extend the existing Green Light Optimal Speed and Dwell Time Systems (GLOSA/GLODTA) to account for the specific needs of electric buses. That is, they include the goals of minimizing the energy consumption between charging stations, and maximizing available charging time. At the same time, interference with schedule requirements is minimized. The formulated heuristics are tested on a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor case study, where different scenarios—such as placement of charging stations and bus regularity—are studied to assess under which conditions each action (maintain speed, accelerate or dwell for a longer time at a stop) is beneficial. Results show that eGLOSA contributes to schedule adherence while eGLODTA allows satisfying charging time constraints. [less ▲]

The ever-increasing variety of services built on top of the Controller Area Network (CAN), along with the recent discovery of vulnerabilities in CAN-based automotive systems (some of them demonstrated in practice) stimulated a renewed attention to security-oriented enhancements of the CAN protocol. The issue is further compounded nowadays because, unlike in the past, security can no longer be enforced by physical bus segregation. This paper describes how CAN XR, a recently proposed extension of the CAN data-link layer, can effectively support the distributed calculation of arbitrary binary Boolean functions, which are the foundation of most security protocols, without necessarily disclosing their operands on the bus. The feasibility of the approach is then shown through experimental evaluation and by confirming its applicability to a shared key generation protocol proposed in literature. [less ▲]

In this work, we present a semi-automatic pipeline from image to simulation of a patient fractured vertebra after the kyphoplastic augmentation with two balloons. In this procedure, the CT-scan medical image are pre-processed using open-source software Slice3D for segmentation and 3D reconstruction operation. Then, using geometric processing the 3D surface geometry is enhanced to avoid degenerate element and trigging phenomena on vertebra and cement area. We perform a finite element analysis to evaluate the risk of subsequent vertebral fracture. Finally using Monte-Carlo technique, we assess the propagation of uncertainty of material parameter on the evaluation of this risk. Based on the developed semi-automatic pipelines, it is possible to perform a patient-specific simulation that assesses the successful of kyphoplasty operation. [less ▲]

We exploit the key idea that nonlinear system identification is equivalent to linear identification of the socalled Koopman operator. Instead of considering nonlinear system identification in the state space, we obtain a novel linear identification technique by recasting the problem in the infinite-dimensional space of observables. This technique can be described in two main steps. In the first step, similar to a component of the Extended Dynamic Mode Decomposition algorithm, the data are lifted to the infinite-dimensional space and used for linear identification of the Koopman operator. In the second step, the obtained Koopman operator is “projected back” to the finite-dimensional state space, and identified to the nonlinear vector field through a linear least squares problem. The proposed technique is efficient to recover (polynomial) vector fields of different classes of systems, including unstable, chaotic, and open systems. In addition, it is robust to noise, well-suited to model low sampling rate datasets, and able to infer network topology and dynamics. [less ▲]

The increasing accuracy of indoor positioning systems requires an appropriately accurate evaluation, which compares system outputs with the known coordinates of test locations --- the ground truth. Although ground truth data are rarely (if ever) tested, they are traditionally assumed to be perfectly accurate. However, even small errors introduced by inaccurate ground truth need to be taken into account for fair evaluation and comparison between modern high-resolution positioning systems. In this paper we analyze the quality of ground truth data provided by clicking on an interactive floor plan (a method employed by such classical systems as RADAR and Horus). Experimental results show that this method has high precision but low accuracy, and high systematic errors make it unsuitable for evaluation of fine-grained localization systems. [less ▲]

We describe in this paper, a report of our participation at COLIEE 2016 Information Retrieval (IR) and Legal Question Answering (LQA) tasks. Our solution for the IR part employs the use of a simple but effective Machine Learning (ML) procedure. Our Question Answering solution answers "YES or 'NO' to a question, i.e., 'YES' if the question is entailed by a text and 'NO' otherwise. With recent exploit of Multi-layered Neural Network systems at language modeling tasks, we presented a Deep Learning approach which uses an adaptive variant of the Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM), i.e. the Child Sum Tree LSTM (CST-LSTM) algorithm that we modified to suit our purpose. Additionally, we benchmarked this approach by handcrafting features for two popular ML algorithms, i.e., the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and the Random Forest (RF) algorithms. Even though we used some features that have performed well from similar works, we also introduced some semantic features for performance improvement. We used the results from these two algorithms as the baseline for our CST-LSTM algorithm. All evaluation was done on the COLIEE 2015 training and test sets. Achieving compliance with legal regulations is no easy task. Normally, laws state general requirements but do not provide clear parameters to determine when such requirements are met. On a different level, industrial standards and best practices define specific objectives that can be certified by means of auditing procedures from qualified bodies. Implementing a standard does not per se guarantee legal compliance, with the rare exception when the standard is also endorsed by the law itself. But standards and laws in the same domain may have overlaps and correlations, so adopting the former may provide an argument to demonstrate that adequate measures were taken to achieve legal compliance. In this paper, we introduce a framework that, using state-of-the-art Natural Language Semantics techniques, helps process legal documents and standards to build a knowledge base to store their logic representations, and the correlations between them. The knowledge base will help legal experts assess what requirements of the law are met by the standard and, consequently, recognize what requirements still need to be implemented to fill the remaining gaps. An application of the framework is exemplified by comparing a provision of the European General Data Protection Regulation against the ISO/IEC 27001:2013 standard. [less ▲]
