The new phase of space exploration involves a growing number of human and robotic missions with varying communication and service requirements. Continuous, maximum coverage of areas where activities are concentrated and orbiting missions (single spacecraft or constellations) around the Earth, Moon or Mars will be particularly challenging. The standardization of the 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) has already begun [1], and nothing prevents 5G from becoming a common communications standard supporting space resource missions [2]. The 5G Space Communications Lab (5G-SpaceLab) is an interdisciplinary experimental platform, funded by the Luxembourg Space Agency and is part of the Space Research Program of SnT. The lab allows users to design and emulate realistic space communications and control scenarios for the next-generation of space applications. The capabilities of the 5G-SpaceLab testbed combine the experience of different disciplines including space communications, space and satellite mission design, and space robotics. The most relevant include the demonstration of SDR 5G NTN terminals including NB-IoT, emulation of space communications channel scenarios (e.g. link budget, delay, Doppler…), small satellite platform and payload design and testing, satellite swarm flight formation, lunar rover and robotic arm control and AI-powered telerobotics. Earth-Moon communications is one of the scenarios demonstrated in the 5G-SpaceLab. Bidirectional communication for the teleoperation of lunar rovers for near real-time operations including data collection and sensors feedback will be tested. AI-based approaches for perception and control will be developed to overcome communication delays and to provide safer, trustworthy, and efficient remote control of the rovers. The success of carsharing as a new and more sustainable way of travel is moving private car ownership towards a service use model. Competitivity is an essential aspect of this service and ways to increase profit while offering the most appealing service are still getting explored. Among others, dynamic pricing strategies can be designed to increase profit by attracting more users, selling more rental hours or maximizing fleet utilization. In this paper, we propose an experimental method aimed at developing a model for maximizing service profit. Using agent-based modeling to generate realistic scenarios, we analyze pricing as a function of the potential demand (i.e. number of members) and supply (hours of booking supplied). The process of reaching the maximum profit consists of testing various combinations of pricing - demand and pricing – supply ranges in order to find the price that maximize the profit for every demand and supply level. Once the optimal prices are known, a polynomial fitting and an optimization method are used to generate a function linking all the maximal profit obtaining the advised price to offer for any specific supply levels. Results show how the profit only slightly depends on the variability of the potential demand, while it strongly depends on the amount of supply. It is then shown how it is possible to obtain a linear relation that maximizes the profit in function of the price offered once the supply is known. [less ▲]

We introduce a rule based multiline holding criterion for regularity in branch and trunk networks accounting for all passenger groups. On the shared transit corridor, we consider synchronization at the merging or the diverging stop. The decision between holding for regularity or synchronization is taken by comparing the expected passenger cost of each control action. The proposed criterion is tested through simulation in a synthetic double fork network with different shares of transferring passengers, control schemes for regularity and synchronization. The results show that multiline control outperforms the state of the art schemes at the network level, stemming from benefits occurring at the first part of the route and the shared transit corridor and a 3.5% more stable joint headway compared to the other schemes. Additionally, it is advised to perform the synchronization at the diverging stop, as it proves to result in a more stable transferring time equal to the joint frequency of the corridor while reducing the transfer time variability up to -42.7%. In this paper we analyze the impact of using cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS) to manage electrical bus systems. A simulation-based study is presented where three control strategies are used to regulate the operations of a line, namely bus holding, Green Light Optimal Dwell Time Adaptation (GLODTA) and Transit Signal Priority (TSP). The results show, using a realistic scenario of a major line in Luxembourg City, that buses are efficiently operated without necessarily providing additional priority to public transport, hence without negatively affecting the capacity of the private vehicles system. Benefits in terms of headway regulations, energy consumption and travel time variance reductions are quantified. [less ▲]

Determining the purpose of trips brings is a fundamental information to evaluate travel demand during the day and to predict longer-term impacts on the population’s travel behavior. The concept of tours is the most suited to consider the value of a daily scheduling of individuals and travel interdependencies. However, the meticulous care required for both collecting data of high quality and interpret results of advanced demand models are frequently considered as major drawbacks. The objective of this study is to incorporate into a standard trip-based model some inherent concepts of activity-based models in order to enhance the representation of travel behavior. The main focus of this work is to infer, employing utility theory, the trip purpose of a population, at a zonal level. Making use of Markov Chain Monte Carlo, a set of parameters is estimated in order to retrieve tour-based primitives of the demand. The main advantage of this methodology is the low requirements in terms of data, as no individual information are used, and the good interpretation of the model. Estimated parameters of the priors set a utility-based probability function for departure time, which allows to have a dynamic overview of the demand. In order to account for the tour consistency of travel decisions, a duration constraint is added to the model. The proposed model is applied to the region of Luxembourg city and the results show the potential of the methodologies for dividing an observed demand based on the activity at destination. [less ▲]

Ever improving low cost, lightweight and easy to use sensing technologies are enabling the capture of rich 3D Datasets to support an unprecedented range of applications in Geosciences. Especially low-cost LiDAR systems as well as optical sensors, which can be deployed from terrestrial or low altitude aerial platforms, allow the collection of large datasets without detailed expert knowledge or training. Dense pointcloud derived from these technologies provide an invaluable source to fill the gap between highly precise and accurate terrestrial topographic surveys and large area Digital Surface Models (DSMs) derived from airborne and spaceborne sensors. However, the collection of reliable 3D pointclouds in remote and hazardous locations remains to be very difficult and costly. Establishing a reliable georeference, ensuring accuracy and data quality as well as merging such rich datasets with existing or space borne mapping provide additional challenges. The presented case study investigates the data quality and integration of a heterogeneous dataset collected over the remote island of Tristan da Cunha. High-resolution 3D pointclouds derived by TLS and drone Photogrammetry are merged with space borne imagery while preserving the accurate georeference provided by Ground Control derived from geodetic observations. The volcanic island of Tristan da Cunha located in the centre of the Southern Atlantic Ocean is one of the most remote and difficult to access locations on the planet. Its remote location, rough climatic conditions and consistent cloud coverage provides exceptional challenges for terrestrial, aerial as well as space borne data acquisition. Amongst many other scientific installations, the island also hosts a continuous GNSS station observation and monitoring facilities operated by the University of Luxembourg, which provided the opportunity to conduct a local terrestrial data acquisition campaign consistent with a terrestrial ground survey, Laserscanning and an image acquisition from a low-cost drone. The highly accurate Ground Control network, observed by GNSS and total station, provides a reliable georeference. Pointclouds were acquired around the area of the harbour using a Leica P20 terrestrial Laserscanner, as well as drone Photogrammetry based on images collected by a low-cost DJI Phantom3 drone. To produce a map of the complete island a comprehensive dataset of high-resolution space borne imagery based on the Digital Globe WorldView constellation was acquired which provided high resolution mapping information. The case study presents a cross-validation of terrestrial, low altitude airborne as well as spaceborne datasets in terms coregistration, absolute georeference, scale, resolution and overall data quality. Following the evaluation a practical approach to fuse this heterogeneous dataset is applied which aims to preserve overall data quality, local resolution and accurate georeference and avoid edge artefacts. The conclusions drawn from our preliminary results provide some good practice advice for similar projects. The final topographic dataset enables mapping and monitoring of local geohazards as, e.g. coastal erosion and recent landslides thus also supporting the local population. [less ▲]

In this work, we present a semi-automatic pipeline from image to simulation of a patient fractured vertebra after the kyphoplastic augmentation with two balloons. In this procedure, the CT-scan medical image are pre-processed using open-source software Slice3D for segmentation and 3D reconstruction operation. Then, using geometric processing the 3D surface geometry is enhanced to avoid degenerate element and trigging phenomena on vertebra and cement area. We perform a finite element analysis to evaluate the risk of subsequent vertebral fracture. Finally using Monte-Carlo technique, we assess the propagation of uncertainty of material parameter on the evaluation of this risk. Based on the developed semi-automatic pipelines, it is possible to perform a patient-specific simulation that assesses the successful of kyphoplasty operation. [less ▲]

During the last years, small lightweight and low cost remotely piloted aerial systems (RPAS) commonly referred as Drones have rapidly developed into capable low-cost Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Fuelled by a vibrant community of scientists, professionals and hobby enthusiasts enabling technologies have matured quickly, and prices of consumer grade as well as semi-professional systems fell sharply. Especially multirotor vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAS have proven to be versatile and flexible platforms which can be equipped with a range of sensors capable of capturing aerial data for a variety of 2D and 3D mapping applications. Consumer grade, low weight systems as the DJI Phantom or 3DR Solo have a limited payload and can carry low weight action cameras like the GoPro Hero models which are capable of collecting video as well as still RGB and near-infrared imagery. Applying traditional Photogrammetric methods to imagery from low-cost UAS systems proved complex and impractical in the past. However modern the state-of-the-art structure from motion algorithms implemented in off the shelf software packages (sometimes referred as new Photogrammetry), cloud processing environments and available via open source libraries promise to generate dense 3D point clouds, textured models and orthomosaics in high quality and without much effort. How accurate and how reliable are data products generated from such systems? Expanding from a preliminary study (BACKES & TEASDALE 2015) we review the every progressing capabilities and features of COTS (commercial of the shelf) user and semi-professional UAS systems under the aspects of deployable sensors, ease of use, reliability as well as safety. We show the workflow from flight planning, data collection to dense pointclould matching using a range of software products. The resulting point clouds are evaluated and benchmarked using a highly accurate and dense reference data acquired via geodetic terrestrial survey and Laserscanning. The results of this evaluations allow conclusions on the current accuracy capabilities of this such low-cost systems. [less ▲]

Numerous natural and man-made materials are essentially discrete structures at the mesoscale or microscale (see Fig. 1). Discrete mechanical models can be formulated to capture typical mechanical phenomena arising from this discreteness. Failure in these materials, which often starts with the fracture of an individual bond, can be predicted based on the small-scale mechanics with these models. For failure, but also for non-local mechanics, no phenomenological descriptions are required in these models. This makes them more predictive than constitutive material models for this type of materials. [less ▲]

The Ecological Footprint methodology proposed by the Global Footprint Network (GFN) seems to be not entirely appropriate for small countries with less than one million inhabitants [Ewing et al., 2008]. This may be a reason why e.g. results for Luxembourg, a country with 470,000 inhabitants, have never been included into official country Footprint comparisons. Therefore, the methodology needs to be adapted to be used for communication purpose in Luxembourg. This contribution presents Luxembourg’s approach for illustrating the national consumption impacts to finally discuss the integration of the Ecological Footprint as an indicator for sustainable development in the national indicator system. Estimation in its diverse forms is assumed to be relevant for problem solving in engineering design due to the inherent deficiencies in information availability and reliability. Nevertheless aside from some exception estimation as a method is hardly mentioned in standard literature on systematic approaches to engineering design like Pahl and Beitz. As well it is rarely deliberate addressed in engineering education. Engineering designers are expected to gain estimation competence by experience. Good performance in estimation and the development of estimation competence by hat is left to chance. Estimation as a problem solving strategy covers a wide range of activities on a continuous spectrum between the extremes of random guesses and highly mathematical statistics based approaches. Our research addresses estimation activities which are solely based on cognitive performance, without using specific mathematical procedures or technological support. Our current study is an explorative, qualitative protocol analysis of two idea creation meetings addressing different problems in the early phases of a technology-driven innovation project recorded by the DTRS7 organisation. The addressed research questions are: Where, how, why and what for is estimation used in engineering design? This analysis should give further insight in the not widely delineated topic of estimation in engineering design. [less ▲]
