Eulerian-Lagrangian couplings are nowadays widely used to address engineering and technical problems. In particular, CFD-DEM couplings have been successfully applied to study several configurations ranging from mechanical, to chemical and environmental engineering. However, such simulations are normally very computationally intensive, and the execution time represents a major issue for the applicability of this numerical approach to complex scenarios. With this work, we introduce a novel coupling approach aiming at improving the performance of the parallel CFD-DEM simulations. This strategy relies on two points. First, we propose a new partition-collocation strategy for the parallel execution of CFD–DEM couplings, which can considerably reduce the amount of inter-process communication between the CFD and DEM parts. However, this strategy imposes some alignment constraints on the CFD mesh. Secondly, we adopt a dual-grid multiscale scheme for the CFD-DEM coupling, that is known to offer better numerical properties, and that allows us to obtain more flexibility on the domain partitioning overcoming the alignment constraints. We assess the correctness and performance of our approach on elementary benchmarks and at a large scale with a realistic test-case. The results show a significant performance improvement compared to other state-of-art CFD-DEM couplings presented in the literature. [less ▲]

Readmission Agreement has been criticized by many parties not only because of the fact that EU did not want to take the refugees but also because most of the actors thought that Turkey is not capable of handling the numbers while some others suggested that Turkey does not meet the bare minimum of democratic credentials to be able to look after the refugees, after all it is seen that Turkey is not treating its own citizens in with a just approach. In this paper, I would like to start with a brief background to what Turkey had done in order to comply with the EU Acquis till now and what the government’s weaknesses have been regarding this process. Why was the success of enactment of Act on Foreigners and International Protection shadowed by the open door policy towards the Syrian refugees and why did the state let many of the refugees pass to Greece although the officials were well aware that there might have been many deaths? The readmission agreement, on the other hand, was signed on 26th of March 2016 and it had many implications. It also had conditions as it was a typical carrot and stick policy of the EU, but it also led the relationship to become more interest based while the norms and ideas on solidarity and creativity have lost their significance. There is a great loss in terms of the normative power of the EU and there are great losses in terms of how democracy was used functionally by the Turkish government and this has manifested itself in the Readmission Agreement in the clearest way. After the background and perspectives from both sides, I suggest that it is a loss-loss game rather than a win-win situation, moreover, it is not the story of an empire that tells Turkey what to do or it is not the Turkish republic that follows the democratic path but it has become the clash of collapsing empires, an anachronistic way of dealing with a crisis. Finally, I will finish with policy suggestions to both sides of this dilemma as far as my theoretical background allows me. [less ▲]

We illustrate in this presentation an optimized HPC implementation for outranking digraphs of huge orders, up to several millions of decision alternatives. The proposed outranking digraph model is based on a quantiles equivalence class decomposition of the underlying multicriteria performance tableau. When locally ranking each of these ordered components, we may readily obtain an overall linear ranking of big sets of decision alternatives. The proposed optimization strategies tackles algorithmic refinements of the ranking algorithm, reducing the size of python data objects, typing the data for efficient cython and C compilation, efficient sharing of static data via global python variables, using a multiprocessing task queue, and, last but not least, use the efficient UL HPC equipements. In this contribution, we use a factorial design to explore the moderating role of transaction costs on scarring due to previous unemployment and skills underutilization. Furthermore, we investigate the extent to which the perceived difficulty of recruiting moderates these effects. Factorial designs allow studying respondents’ evaluations as a function of multidimensional stimuli. In this application, we create a pool of hypothetical candidates, where we experimentally vary individual characteristics of young job applicants. We then measure how our respondents, actual recruiters, evaluate the hiring chances of these young people. We further use information provided by the respondents to estimate transaction costs. Using data from a recent large-scale factorial survey of recruiters in four European countries and employing multilevel linear regression models, we found, overall, scarring due to skills underutilization to exceed scarring due to unemployment. Skills underutilization was especially penalized when recruiting for a particular position was considered easy. Indirect transaction costs, particularly anticipated time required for organizational socialization, were negatively associated with unemployment scarring, but positively with scarring due to skill underutilization. Unemployment spells only had a negative effect on hiring chances, for jobs where there were monetary expenses for introductory training. Our findings constitute new evidence on the heterogeneity of scarring effects on hiring chances. We further contribute to the literature by highlighting the role of transaction costs and labor market performance. [less ▲]

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) around 35000 volunteers from many countries fought in the so-called International Brigades that were created and organised by the Communist International. Roughly 4000 of these volunteers were of Jewish descent. In december 1937, the Jewish Naftali Botwin company was formed within the 13th Polish Dombrowski Brigade as a result of lobbying efforts by Polish-Jewish migrant communists in Paris. In their daily newspaper, Naye Prese, the company’s existence became an important part of the propaganda battle waged on the ‘Jewish street’ in Paris in support of the Comintern’s post-1935 Popular Front tactic. But while the propaganda was unmistakably communist, the subtext became increasingly Jewish in the course of the war. Indeed, against a background of age-old allegations of ‘Jewish cowardice’, Naye Prese consistently emphasised that the fight of Jewish volunteers, symbolised by the Botwin Company, had an emancipatory dimension: Jews were worthy and equal fighters. Their participation simultaneously served as a model of Jewish action to be emulated by Jewish migrants in France as they sought to negotiate increasingly difficult living circumstances. After World War II and the Holocaust, the memory of Jewish volunteers became decisively shaped by debates on Jewish responses to fascism and Nazism; their participation was inscribed in a broader narrative of Jewish resistance that aimed to counter the myth of Jewish passivity in the face of the Nazi onslaught. To put it succinctly: ‘Spain’ served to prove that Jews did not go like “sheep to the slaughter” but already resisted Hitler in Spain. Based upon my scholarship on Jewish volunteers in the International Brigades, the aim of this paper, then, is to analyze the symbolic meaning of their participation, and show the various ways in which the qualification ‘Jewish’ was and has been imbued with meaning, both during and after the Spanish Civil War. Ultimately, I will show how volunteers of Jewish descent during the Spanish Civil War became Jewish volunteers after the Holocaust. [less ▲]

Pest und Lepra gehören zu den schrecklichsten Krankheiten der Geschichte. Die Erfahrung mit diesen Seuchen hat sich tief ins kollektive Gedächtnis eingegraben und wirkt bis heute nach. Und das, obwohl beide Krankheiten schon lange aus Europa verschwunden sind. Die Lepra seit ca. 300 Jahren und die Pest seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Dennoch üben Pest und Lepra in unserer Gesellschaft bis heute eine starke Faszination von Schauer, Grusel und Schrecken aus. Gerne und häufig werden Pest- und Lepramotive deshalb in der Literatur verwendet, aber auch ungleich plakativer in Romanen, in Film und Fernsehen sowie auch in Computerspielen. Der Vortrag widmet sich den historischen Figurationen von Lepra und Pest, ihren historischen Wurzeln und Ausprägungen. Wie reagierten die Gesellschaften auf die Bedrohung durch die Seuchen? Mit welchen Methoden wurde versucht, die schicksalhaften und unerklärlichen Krankheitserfahrungen verständlich zu machen und zu kategorisieren? Welche Bilder und Metaphern lassen sich greifen? Eine besondere Rolle spielen dabei ästhetische Dimensionen von Krankheitsdarstellungen, wie an vielen Beispielen gezeigt wird. [less ▲]
