Shimura curves arise as a natural generalisation of elliptic curves. As modular curves, they are constructed as Riemann surfaces, and they turn out to have structure of algebraic curve, i.e. they can be described by some algebraic equations with coefficients in some finite extension of Q. Number theorists are interested in the reductions modulo p of these equations. The problem is that these equations are very difficult to compute. I will describe a method to find these reductions without actually knowing the equation. [less ▲]

In our paper, we will demonstrate how a multimodal conversation analytic approach can shed light on the complex phenomenon of joint problem solving in a Mathematics classroom. Through a fine-grained video based single case analysis (Mondada, 2013; Arend et al., 2014), we will show how three children collaboratively solve mathematical problems by mobilizing various resources. They address each other by talking, gazing, gesturing, changing body position as well as by manipulating artefacts. Multimodal conversation analysis allows us to investigate the ongoing organisation of the children’s problem solving activity in its temporal and sequential unfolding as well as to study the multimodally embodied multiparty utterances in their mutual responsiveness (Streeck et al, 2011). Favouring an interactional approach interested in the coordinated achievement of activity (Arend & Sunnen, 2016), we consider that the progress and the outcome of the problem solving activity emerge in situ from the children’s interactions. By relying on multimodal CA, we may point out how the children achieve mutual understanding while accomplishing a task in a Mathematics lesson. Our paper seeks to make a contribution to investigate group-based classroom activities (Mercer et al, 2004) as well as to sensitise teachers to the high complexity of mutually accomplished classroom tasks. Die wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit Grenzen hat Konjunktur. Dies hat nicht nur zahllose empirische Fallstudien zur Folge, ebenso eine dynamische Entwicklung von Konzepten und Denkmodellen, die Grenz(raum)phänomene umfassend erfassen sollen. Dabei zu beobachten ist, dass bewährte Prinzipien der kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten Border Studies oft lediglich neu benannt werden und tatsächliche Innovationen noch ausstehen. In dem Vortrag wird daher der Versuch unternommen, die Praxistheorien aus einer Border-Perspektive zu erschließen und ihr Potential für die kulturwissenschaftliche Grenz(raum)forschung zu diskutieren. Die Praxistheorien, wie sie seit über einem Jahrzehnt in der Kultursoziologie intensiv debattiert werden, erlauben Grenzen in ihren sozialen (Re-)Produktionsprozessen in unterschiedlichen Dimensionen zu untersuchen. Als heuristische Werkzeuge berücksichtigen sie die körperlich-materiale Dimension menschlicher Aktivität und setzen keinen kollektiv geteilten oder territorial determinierten Konsens der Sinndeutung voraus. Vielmehr sehen sie die Unberechenbarkeit des Sozialen vor und interessieren sich für Praxislogiken, d.h. für die in (grenzüberschreitenden) Aktivitäten wirksamen und zugleich hervorgebrachten Wissensordnungen. Weiter bietet die Verdichtung von sozialen Praktiken zu (grenzüberschreitenden) Praxisformationen einen vielversprechenden Ansatzpunkt, um Konzepte wie ‚Grenzlandgesellschaft’ oder ‚Diaspora’ sowohl konzeptionell als auch empirisch ‚anders’ zu fassen. Die im Vortrag vorgestellten Überlegungen bilden die erste Annäherung an eine mögliche praxistheoretische Reformulierung der kulturwissenschaftlich orientierten Border Studies. [less ▲]

Eine häufig sehr enge Verflechtung der Interkulturalitätsforschung mit dem Globalisierungsdiskurs hat dazu geführt, dass komplexe interkulturelle Phänomene, die keinen konkreten Bezug dazu haben, kaum Beachtung finden. Dieser Vortrag soll sich interkulturellen Erscheinungsmustern widmen, die sich vor allem im literarischen Feld zeigen und die in einem lebensweltlich-gegenwartszentrierten Raster nicht erfasst werden und für die andere Beschreibungsmodelle gefunden werden müssen. Im Fokus dieses Vortrags soll der Bereich der literarischen Antiken-Rezeption stehen, die mit der Romantik nicht mehr eindeutig als Fortschreibung einer Traditionslinie und „epigonale[ ] Bewahrung der tradierten Muster“ (Riedel) gesehen werden kann. Vielmehr setzt hier – bspw. bei Friedrich Schlegel – eine Distanzierung ein, die Hellas und Rom zu einem Anderen und damit deren literarische Repräsentation für interkulturelle Fragestellungen interessant macht. Besondere Beachtung verdient der Bereich auch deshalb, weil Bezugnahmen auf die griechisch-römische Antike grundsätzlich im intermediären Bereich von Eigenem und Fremdem zu verorten sind und damit in spezifischer Art und Weise als interkulturelles Phänomen gelten können. Überlegungen zur Beschreibung der Antiken-Rezeption als komplexem interkulturellen Phänomen sollen vor allem anhand von Texten aus der Zeit um 1800 angestellt werden. [less ▲]

Since 1958 a series of new reform programmes, known as “New Math reform” tried to fundamentally deconstruct the mathematics education of schools in the United States. This reform aimed to promote the “problem-solving” abilities in students and was a means to modernise not just the school math education but also the idea of why students should learn mathematics. Later, the reform project travelled to Europe through the support of the OECD and some other international or European organisation. This paper briefly reviews the process of the adaptation of this reform project in Luxembourg during the 1960s and 1970s. Researchers and practitioners have contributed a lot to the understanding of the dynamics of labor migration. Moreover, mobilites of younger persons remain at the periphery of the migration research and are overshadowed by how “older” migrants move and why. In this presentation we would like to draw more attention to the mobility of young persons who move in Europe with the purpose of work. In particular, we will explore the young employment mobility in its own way and focus on mobility trajectories of young Europeans by asking ourselves: how they move and why? For that we formulate the central question as: Along their mobility trajectories, what comes across their pathways? What is their “mobility gate”? The seminar analyses the obligation of the Member States to provide remedies sufficient to ensure effective legal protection in the fields covered by EU law (Article 19 TEU). The duty of the national judge, stemming from fundamental EU law principles, to ensure effective implementation of EU law and effective judicial protection, is to be considered in the light of the right to an effective remedy enshrined in Article 47 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which affects the balancing exercise with national procedural autonomy. The particular place and function of the preliminary reference procedure (Art 267 TFEU) in the legal order of the European Union may shed light on the impact of Article 19 TEU on the European mandate of the national judge. La nouvelle génération de blocs de maçonnerie montés à sec (sans joint) et muni d’éléments d’engrenages ou d’emboîtement présente des avantages substantiels tant en précision et vitesse de pose, qu’en résistance aux déplacements transversaux, en économie de matériaux et en facilité de démontage. La performance d’un mur en maçonnerie est étroitement liée à sa stabilité générale et à la résistance mécanique des blocs de maçonnerie qui le composent. L’un des objectifs de cette étude était de rechercher un optimum entre cinq paramètres importants dans la conception d’une maçonnerie à savoir le poids, le coût, la facilité de production, mais surtout la résistance mécanique et la résistance thermique. La conception du nouveau bloc a ainsi été entreprise par calculs numériques. [less ▲]

Dynamische Mathematik wird seit Jahren erfolgreich in der Sekundarstufe eingesetzt. So erlaubt Dynamische Geometrie Software (DGS) das Erkunden geometrischer Beziehungen, Computer Algebra Systeme (CAS) ermöglichen die Analyse von Funktionen, Tabellenkalkulation gestattet Experimente mit Folgen, usw. Ist dies auch bei jüngeren Kindern denkbar? In der Grundschule ist einerseits ein enaktiver Zugang zu neuem Wissen unabdingbar. Dieser kann jedoch auch (teilweise) virtuell am Computer erfolgen. Andererseits begünstigt ein entdeckender, problemorientierter Unterricht die eigenständige Begriffsbildung der Kinder. Auch solche reichhaltigen Aufgabenstellungen können den Kindern am Computer angeboten werden. Es spricht demnach nichts gegen dynamische Mathematik in der Grundschule. Die didaktischen Möglichkeiten gehen sogar weit über jene eines traditionellen Unterrichts hinaus. Exemplarisch wird anhand von konkreten Beispielen gezeigt, dass dynamische Mathematik bereits in der Grundschule Vorgehensweisen erlaubt, die anders nicht denkbar sind. This contribution aims at investigating the language policies that are in place in Luxembourg to support the linguistic integration of adult migrants from refugee backgrounds. A rather abrupt and recent change in the country’s refugee intake patterns -reflected in the increased number and shifted geographic origin of international protection applicants- is presenting new challenges for the process of integration and the actors involved. Language is a crucial aspect for inclusion and participation in working and social life, especially in highly diverse, mobile and multilingual contexts such as Luxembourg. It has been demonstrated that in multilingual environments people are more likely to establish effective ways of communication without sharing a common language code, principally through the productive-creative combination of all available language and other communication resources. Against this background, the present contribution examines the presence (or absence) of multilingual approaches in local policies for linguistic integration and language learning. In this connection, I am going to explore whether the inclusion of multilingualism entails the acknowledgment of the asylum applicants’ full linguistic repertoires, or whether it remains limited to the appreciation of those languages that are generally recognized in our context such as French, English, German or Luxembourgish. Similarly, the purposes and forms of available linguistic training are going to be discussed, with particular focus on the organization of formal language education, language training for low educated and illiterate asylum applicants, policy measures for the support of informal/non-formal language learning activities, and potential integration of language learning with professional development and social participation. Main policies at national and organizational level are going to be reviewed and commented on using interview data from key actors involved in the process. In the standard paradigm of isogeometric analysis, the geometry and the simulation spaces are tightly integrated, i.e. the same non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) space, which is used for the geometry representation of the domain, is employed for the numerical solution of the problem over the domain. However, there are situations where this tight integration is a bane rather than a boon. Such situations arise where, e.g., (1) the geometry of the domain is simple enough to be represented by low order NURBS, whereas the unknown (exact) solution of the problem is sufficiently regular, and thus, the numerical solution can be obtained with improved accuracy by using NURBS of order higher than that required for the geometry, (2) the constraint of using the same space for the geometry and the numerical solution is particularly undesirable, such as in the shape and topology optimization, and (3) the solution of the problem has low regularity but for the curved boundary of the domain one can employ higher order NURBS. Therefore, we propose to weaken this constraint. An extensive study of patch tests on various combinations of polynomial degree, geometry type, and various cases of varying degrees and control variables between the geometry and the numerical solution will be discussed. It will be shown, with concrete reasoning, that why patch test fails in certain cases, and that those cases should be avoided in practice. Thereafter, selective numerical examples will be presented to address some of the above-mentioned situations, and it will be shown that weakening the tight coupling between geometry and simulation offers more flexibility in choosing the numerical solution spaces, and thus, improved accuracy of the numerical solution. In the standard paradigm of isogeometric analysis [2, 1], the geometry and the simulation spaces are tightly integrated, i.e. the non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) space, which is used for the geometry representation of the domain, is also employed for the numerical solution of the problem over the domain. However, in certain situations, such as, when the geometry of the domain can be represented by low order NURBS but the numerical solution can be obtained with improved accuracy by using NURBS of order higher than that required for the geometry; or in the shape and topology optimization where the constraint of using the same space for the geometry and the numerical solution is not favorable, this tight coupling is disadvantageous. Therefore, we study the effect of decoupling the spaces for the geometry representation and the numerical solution, though still using the prevalent functions in CAD/CAGD. To begin with, we perform the patch tests on various combinations of polynomial degree, geometry type, and various cases of varying degrees and control variables between the geometry and the numerical solution. This shows that certain cases, perhaps intuitive, should be avoided in practice because patch test fails. The above-mentioned situations are further explored with some numerical examples, which shows that weakening the tight coupling between geometry and simulation offers more flexibility in choosing the numerical solution spaces. The present course will focus on intergenerational family relations over the life-span from the perspective of developmental psychology. In the first section, we will have a closer look at central definitions, models and concepts from life-span developmental psychology–for instance, life-span models of development, structuring the life course, developmental tasks, normative and non-normative life events, and the concept of generation. In the second part, we will focus on key concepts in the study of intergenerational family relations, such as intergenerational solidarity, conflict and ambivalence. Further, specific research evidence regarding intergenerational relations over the life span (including adolescent-parent, adult child-parent as well as grandchild-grandparent relations) will be presented and discussed, also taking into account cross-cultural aspects and intergenerational relations in the context of migration. The course will present an overview of recent developments, which will enable students to make informed choices in terms of discretization and model selection in solving numerical problems in mechanics. We will cover discretization strategies ranging from the standard finite element method, the smoothed finite element method, the extended finite element method, polygonal and virtual element methods, meshfree methods. The applications range between fracture of heterogeneous materials and biomedical simulations. The intended learning outcomes of the course are such that the students will be: - able to critically assess discretization schemes in mechanics - able to implement simple error estimators for finite element methods - familiar with basic multi-scale methods for fracture and their limitations - able to follow basic literature in model error and model selection, in particular based on Bayesian inference Course participants will learn these topics through lectures and hands-on numerical experiments. Die Stellung des Deutschen an der mehrsprachigen Universität Luxemburg Mehrsprachigkeit ist ein Identitätsmerkmal der Universität Luxemburg, das sich sowohl im beruflichen Alltag der Universität als auch in ihren zahlreichen mehrsprachigen Studiengängen wiederspiegelt. Um die mehrsprachigen Kompetenzen von MitarbeiterInnen und Studierenden zu fördern, wurde im Mai 2014 das Sprachenzentrum der Universität Luxemburg gegründet. Ein Fokus des Zentrums liegt auf der Unterstützung wissenschaftlicher und berufsspezifischer Sprachkompetenzen in den Universitätssprachen Englisch, Französisch und Deutsch sowie auf dem Ausbau mehrsprachiger Kompetenzen. Zusätzlich werden allgemeinsprachliche Kurse für die eben genannten Sprachen sowie für Luxemburgisch angeboten. Im Wintersemester 2014/15 hat das Sprachenzentrum eine umfangreiche und differenzierte Befragung durchgeführt, um den Bedarf für Sprachunterstützung an der Universität abzuschätzen. In der Studie wurden einerseits 24 teilstrukturierte Interviews mit den Studien¬programm¬¬direktorInnen der Fakultäten durchgeführt und andererseits mittels Online-Fragebogen alle MitarbeiterInnen und alle Studierenden der Universität befragt. In diesem Vortrag werden Ergebnisse aus dieser Bedarfserhebung präsentiert, die Aufschluss über die Stellung des Deutschen an der Universität Luxemburg geben. Während im Französischen durchaus mehrere Sprachniveaus zu finden sind und das Englische hauptsächlich auf mittlerem und hohem Sprachniveaus vertreten ist, beherrschen MitarbeiterInnen und Studierende Deutsch entweder auf sehr hohem Niveau oder haben keine oder nur geringe Deutschkenntnisse. Studierende (37%) sind gegenüber MitarbeiterInnen (29%) eher dazu bereit, Deutsch zu lernen, wobei beide Gruppen tendenziell eher ihre mündlichen als ihre schriftsprachlichen Kompetenzen verbessern wollen. Deutsch ist in den Studienprogrammen die am wenigsten etablierte Sprache, wobei große Unterschiede zwischen den drei Fakultäten bestehen. In den beiden Fakultäten, in denen Deutsch als Wissenschaftssprache kaum vertreten ist, wird die Notwendigkeit, dass Studierende Deutschkenntnisse erwerben, von Lehrenden und Studierenden allerdings sehr unterschiedlich eingeschätzt.
