This paper examines images of industrial work(ers) as contributions to visual meaning-making. The selected examples illustrate the deployment of industrial work(ers) as a motif in a variety of artistic genres and media that circulated in interwar Luxembourg. The different depictions, which were distributed and promoted by different actors with different interests, show the industrial worker as affiliated with or a representative of a particular steel company, the industrial sector as a whole, the Luxembourg nation or the working class. All actors employed the figure of the worker for their own ends, drafting it into the service of their respective ideas and perspectives on industrial work. Suggesting specific ways of seeing, the images contributed to the perception and meaning-making of industrial work and were part of an overarching discourse on industrial work(ers) in times of economic and political change. L’utilisation des nouvelles technologies pour transmettre des savoirs. Cette ePublication «La décolonisation: ses enjeux géopolitiques et son impact sur le processus d’intégration européenne» revient sur les grands moments de la désintégration des empires coloniaux européens, avec un accent particulier sur les décolonisations française et britannique, et s’interroge sur l’influence de ce processus de décolonisation sur le processus de construction européenne. Dans un premier temps, elle retrace, à travers des cas précis, les principales étapes de la décolonisation depuis 1945. C’est en effet dans un contexte de guerre froide et de condamnation internationale du colonialisme de plus en plus forte que les populations indigènes vont progressivement se défaire des liens qui les unissent à une Europe exsangue et ruinée par la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Parallèlement, la naissance de l’Europe communautaire amène les métropoles européennes à concilier politique d’outre-mer et politique européenne. Puis, l’entrée sur la scène internationale des pays du tiers-monde entraîne un changement dans les relations entre l’Europe et les (anciennes) colonies et soulève la question d’une politique communautaire d’aide au développement. Dans un deuxième temps, l'ePublication revient donc sur les débats qui ont mené en 1957 à l’association des pays et territoires d’outre-mer (PTOM) à la Communauté économique européenne (CEE), puis à la signature des conventions de Yaoundé (1963) et de Lomé (1975). Un point fort réside dans la collection et l’analyse de plus de 700 ressources documentaires riches et diversifiées, telles que des documents d'archives, des articles de presse, des correspondances, des extraits de mémoires, des photos, des caricatures, etc. [less ▲]

At least since 1870 hours worked per worker declined and real wages increased in many of today’s industrialized countries. The dual nature of technological progress in conjunction with a consumption-leisure complementarity explains these stylized facts. Technological progress drives real wages up and expands the amount of available con- sumption goods. Enjoying consumption goods increases the value of leisure. Therefore, individuals demand more leisure and supply less labor. This mechanism appears in an OLG-model with two-period lived individuals equipped with per-period utility func- tions of the generalized log-log type proposed by Boppart-Krusell (2016). The optimal plan is piecewise defined and hinges on the wage level. Technological progress moves a poor economy out of a regime with low wages and an inelastic supply of hours worked into a regime where wages increase further and hours worked continuously decline. In civil engineering, silicone sealants are widely used in structural sealant glazing applications as an adhesively bonded connection between the glass panels and the building substructure. The current design concept does not take into account the actual stress state and the actual failure mechanism. Therefore, no information about the exact failure probability can be given. Alternative approaches, such as the Finite Element Analysis, also have major disadvantages due to the presence of singularities. Therefore, a method from Finite Fracture Mechanics, calibrated with experimental investigations on bulk material, is applied on silicone sealants, focusing on the shear failure mechanism. The procedure is validated using small scale tests such as simple shear and torsion tests. [less ▲]

The PhD resesarch project“MultiCoSteel” is foussed on the investigation of the beam theory for composite columns with multiple encased steel profiles to find the correct internal stress distributions and stiffnesses. The suitability of the Euler-Bernoulli Theory will be investigated as well as the truss theory and the Vierendeel theory. A complex interaction between steel and concrete materials and lack of knowledge regarding composite behaviour opens opportunities to develop, improve and optimise the system and the design method. Within this research project both aspects will be handled with the objectives; 1) to develop the new, easy-applicable and efficient type of shear connector for an application in composite columns with multiple-encased steel profiles and 2) to prove the design hypothesis of Vierendeel mechanism behaviour. The project is running with close collaboration of industrial partner - ArcelorMittal and it was successfully qualified to the FNR AFR-PPP PhD Grant. [less ▲]

Many people think that we need simply need to provide schools with more digital technologies in order to enhance learning outcomes. However, access to the tools is not enough, teachers need to know how to use these tools in effective ways. I will propose a number of theoretical and practical concepts useful for a strategic integration of digital technologies into teaching. The objective of my presentation will be double in the sense that I want to provide teachers with the conceptual tools to (1) better understand the use of digital media and technologies for learning & teaching purposes in educational settings and (2) better plan and design ICT-enriched learning & teaching activities, grounded in learning sciences and connected to specific local contexts. I will present some examples of pedagogical practices that used such a strategic integration of ICT approach in Luxembourg. [less ▲]
