Crossflow membrane filtration is an effective way of removing both colloidal and dissolved organic matter from contaminated water supplies. Two phenomena domimate solute flux in crossflow systems; concentration polarization and cake layer formation. Many innovative mathematical models for predicting both flux decline and quasi-steady state flux have been produced in the literature. However, limited regime applicability and conflicting physical predictions have made choosing optimal performance parameters in design a challenging process. An overview of the current field of models was undertaken, including an assessment of mathematical assumptions, numerical computation workload and number and complexity of system constants. A new model incorporating viscosity dependence on concentration is developed for the concentration polarization regime. Preliminary results will also be presented from a Monte Carlo based molecular dynamics simulation of volume packing fraction in the cake layer regime. The novel aspects of these models will be compared with existing models and the experimental results of our collaborators. Laboratory ultrafiltration tests were undertaken using varying concentrations of Dextran. An outline of future model directions and refinements will be presented. [less ▲]

It is known that the number of maximal independent sets of the $n$-cycle graph $C_n$ is given by the $n$th term of the Perrin sequence. The action of the automorphism group of $C_n$ on the family of these maximal independent sets partitions this family into disjoint orbits, which represent the non-isomorphic (i.e., defined up to a rotation and a reflection) maximal independent sets. We provide exact formulas for the total number of orbits and the number of orbits having a given number of isomorphic representatives. We also provide exact formulas for the total number of unlabelled (i.e., defined up to a rotation) maximal independent sets and the number of unlabelled maximal independent sets having a given number of isomorphic representatives. It turns out that these formulas involve both Perrin and Padovan sequences. [less ▲]

Numerous studies show that wide ranges of competencies in different fields are necessary to develop a good numerical competency. Our research tried to find an answer to the question, which out of various factors mainly influence the numerical competencies of young children. We focused on visuospatial, perceptive and tactile skills as determinants of the quality of early numerical representations. We adopted a longitudinal research design with three periods of data collection (two data collections during the second year of kindergarten and one at the end of first grade). Our test setting for the kindergarten included tests in the three areas mentioned above. The evaluation of these results shows that the numerical competencies are influenced by visuospatial competencies and knowledge of pre-numerical facts. An importance of the perceptive and tactile skills could not be established. At the end of first grade, after formal mathematical instruction, we made a mathematical competency test. A structural equation model of the subtests shows that the numerical knowledge at this stage can be divided in two separate factors: 1. A representational numerical factor (analogical representation of quantities: Triple Code model of Dehaene) 2. A more formal knowledge of mathematics (visual Arabic representation: Triple Code model of Dehaene, 1992). Predicting these two factors from the competency profile measured in kindergarten showed that the representational numerical factor was very well predicted from a general spatio-numerical factor found in the previous year, while the formal knowledge was predicted to a lesser degree by tactile skills measured at the end of kindergarten. Implications for numerical teaching in Kindergarten will be discussed. [less ▲]

In this paper, fault tolerant constrained MPC control of fuel cells is presented. MPC is one of the control methodologies that can introduce more easily fault-tolerance. Here this capability is extended using new results on explicit MPC control. Explicit MPC control allows to derive off-line the control without need of using optimization. Moreover, since it is based on parametric programming allows to introduce as additional parameters faults what allow in real-time to change controller gains without the need of recomputing the MPC controller or having a bank of pre-computed MPC controllers. Finally, the proposed approach is assessed on a known test bench PEM fuel cell. [less ▲]

The circadian clock is the internal timekeeper of plants. This clock regulates most aspects of plant physiology providing considerable competitive advantage. We are investigating the role for oscillations in the cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) in the circadian control of cellular physiology. We have previously demonstrated that circadian oscillations of [Ca2+]cyt encode photoperiodic information but the precise role of circadian [Ca2+]cyt oscillations remain obscure. We have been taking a systems wide approach to determine the origin and function of circadian oscillations of [Ca2+]cyt. Using pharmacology, bioinformatics and biochemical tools we have new evidence that oscillations of [Ca2+]cyt are generated by the small signalling intermediate, cADPR. Positioning the oscillations of [Ca2+]cyt with respect to the molecular oscillator using reverse genetics indicates that [Ca2+]cyt is an output of the clock. Using a whole genome transcriptional profile we have identified over 1800 circadian-regulated transcripts, many of which encode for Ca2+ signalling elements. The function of circadian-regulated transcripts encoding signalling components is being investigated by reverse genetic screens with automated imaging. Using our extensive data sets describing the circadian regulation of [Ca2+]cyt in different backgrounds and conditions we have constructed a mathematical model. This is being validated using mutant analysis and refined by introducing complexity to the model. Our data and models suggest that [Ca2+]cyt acts an output of the clock that regulates diverse aspects of physiology and has the potential to form a feedback loop with the molecular components of the oscillator. A typical constructional solution for the connection between steel and concrete load bearing elements in highrise- as well as multi-storey-buildings is the anchor plate in steel. A research project deals with the numerical simulation of the load flux between anchor plate, headed shear studs and concrete. Most existing solutions in narrow constructions are dissatisfying in the point of using and analyzing the reinforcement effects. For crack propagation detailed concrete elements with 3d-nonlinear material properties are used. This includes tension and compression capabilities to simulate crack initiation and local failure behavior of the concrete. To cover structural nonlinearities the contact between steel and concrete is considered. The results in form of load flux and crack pattern are validated by comparisons to test results. The numerical simulation will help in optimizing the ratio and position of the reinforcement. [less ▲]
