We consider a Choquet capacity, that is a set function which describes the importance of every subset of criteria in a MCDA problem. The following question is approached: what is the generalized counterpart of the Shannon entropy (defined for a probabilistic measure) for such a capacity? The extension that is proposed depends on the scale type. In the cardinal case, the entropy is defined in terms of the first derivatives of the non-additive measures. In the ordinal case, it refers to the cardinality of the scale values that appear in the set of all capacities. Both generalized entropies are symmetric functions of the capacities and their extreme values (max entropy and min entropy) are characterized. An application to the determination of weights is given when interacting criteria are considered. [less ▲]

The concept of entropy of a discrete fuzzy measure has been recently introduced in two different ways. A first definition was proposed by Marichal [10] in the aggregation framework, and a second one by Yager [25] in the framework of uncertain variables. We present a comparative study between these two proposals and point out their properties. We also propose a definition for the entropy of an ordinal fuzzy measure, that is, a fuzzy measure taking its values in an ordinal scale in the sense of measurement theory. [less ▲]

According to De Houwer et al. (1997) the evaluative learning (EL) paradigm deserves the attention of the implicit research community for various reasons, such as its resistance to the general criticism addressed at implicit learning studies on grounds of often failing to meet information and sensitivity criteria, and the strong evidence for EL to be implicit. Nevertheless, EL is controversial because (1) it is unclear what the sufficient and necessary conditions for EL to take place are, and (2) the extent to which EL can take place without awareness of the relevant contingencies is likewise unclear. The present study aimed at conceptually replicating Baeyens et al.'s (e.g., 1988) EL studies to explore the robustness of the EL phenomenon. In a first phase subjects rated the affective value of various faces. During the subsequent acquisition phase, they were shown different contingent pairs of neutral stimuli (NSi) and affective stimuli (ASi), (i.e. liked, disliked or neutral). Next, they were to rate the whole set of faces again, based on their current first impression. Results failed to replicate typical EL findings: Not only did we fail to observe changes in the evaluations of NSi, but ASi, as well as stimuli that had not been presented during the acquisition phase, were evaluated to be more neutral after the acquisition phase than before. We discuss these results in the context of Field et al.'s (1999) alternative accounts of EL phenomena. [less ▲]

Multiple transmitters and receivers can be used to provide high link capacity in future wireless systems. Herein, an analysis of indoor environment Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output measurements in the 5.8 GHz band is performed and the possible increase in capacity, utilizing multiple transmitters and receivers is examined. The investigation shows that in the measured indoor environment, the scattering is sufficiently rich to provide substantial link capacity increases. Furthermore, the effect of intra-element element spacing on the channel capacity is studied. Finally the possible HiperLAN/2 MIMO channel capacity, based on the measurements, is examined. [less ▲]

We develop a theoretical model for the recently observed threshold for potential sputtering of LiF by slow singly and doubly charged ions. The threshold coincides with the potential energy to create a cold hole in the valence band of LiF by resonant neutralization. We calculate the level shift of the incident ion and the deformation of the valence band under the influence of the projectile. Resonant neutralization becomes possible for ions with recombination energies larger than 10 eV in agreement with the experimental findings. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. This paper considers quadratic surface Lyapunov functions in the study of global stability analysis of on/off systems (OFS), including those OFS with unstable nonlinearity sectors. In previous work, quadratic surface Lyapunov functions were successfully applied to prove global asymptotic stability of limit cycles of relay feedback systems. In this work, we show that these ideas can be used to prove global asymptotic stability of equilibrium points of piecewise linear systems (PLS). We present conditions in the form of LMI that, when satisfied, guarantee global asymptotic stability of an equilibrium point. A large number of examples was successfully proven globally stable. These include systems with an unstable affine linear subsystem, systems of relative degree larger than one and of high dimension, and systems with unstable nonlinearity sectors, for which all classical fail to analyze. In fact, existence of an example with a globally stable equilibrium point that could not be successfully analyzed with this new methodology is still an open problem. This work opens the door to the possibility that more general PLS can be systematically globally analyzed using quadratic surface Lyapunov functions. [less ▲]

A quartz-crystal microbalance technique is used for measuring total sputtering yields for LiF under impact of slow (20 eV, 100 eV, 500 eV and 1000 eV kinetic energy) singly and doubly charged ions. At low kinetic energies (less than or equal to 100 eV) potential sputtering (PS) (i.e., sputtering due to the projectiles potential energy) clearly dominates over kinetically induced sputtering. New insight into the mechanisms for PS is gained by determining the minimum potential energy necessary to induce PS. The measured potential energy threshold at around 10 eV provides evidence that PS can already be induced by the production of cold holes in the valence band of LiF via resonant neutralisation. We are seeking linear projections of supervised high-dimensional robot observations and an appropriate environment model that optimize the robot localization task. We show that an appropriate risk function to minimize is the conditional entropy of the robot positions given the projected observations. We propose a method of iterative optimization through a probabilistic model based on kernel smoothing. To obtain good starting optimization solutions we use canonical correlation analysis. We apply our method on a real experiment involving a mobile robot equipped with an omnidirectional camera in an office setup. [less ▲]

For a large class of relay feedback systems (RFS) there will be limit cycle oscillations. Conditions to check existence and local stability of limit cycles for these systems are well known. Global stability conditions, however, are practically non-existent. The paper presents conditions in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) that guarantee global asymptotic stability of a limit cycle induced by a relay with hysteresis in feedback with an LTI stable system. The analysis is based on finding global quadratic Lyapunov functions for a Poincare map associated with the RFS. We found that a typical Poincare map induced by an LTI flow between two hyperplanes can be represented as a linear transformation analytically parametrized by a scalar function of the state. Moreover, level sets of this function are convex. The search for globally quadratic Lyapunov functions is then done by solving a set of LMIs. Most examples of RFS analyzed by the authors were proven globally stable. Systems analyzed include minimum-phase systems, systems of relative degree larger than one, and of high dimension. This leads us to believe that quadratic stability of associated Poincare maps is common in RFS. [less ▲]

The most often used operator to aggregate criteria in decision making problems is the classical weighted arithmetic mean. In many problems however, the criteria considered interact, and a substitute to the weighted arithmetic mean has to be adopted. We show that, under rather natural conditions, the discrete Choquet integral is an adequate aggregation operator that extends the weighted arithmetic mean by the taking into consideration of the interaction among criteria. The axiomatic that supports the Choquet integral is presented in detail. [less ▲]

One basic assumption to consider an additive utility function is the preferential independence. When interacting criteria are considered, this condition might be violated and a substitute to the classical weighted mean has to be adopted. The Choquet integral seems to be an adequate aggregation operator that extends the weighted mean and the ordered weighted average (OWA). The axiomatics that supports the Choquet integral is presented as well as its behavioral analysis with regards to veto and favor effects, degree of disjunction and measure of dispersion. One illustrative example of its application in the field of MCDM is provided. [less ▲]

This paper introduces four alternative representations of a set function: the M¨obius transformation, the co-M¨obius transformation, and the interactions between elements of any subset of a given set as extensions of Shapley and Banzhaf values. The links between the five equivalent representations of a set function are emphasized in this presentation. [less ▲]

In this short publication, I present a few facts on the security of some current Internet applications. Since one strong focus of this conference was the usage of the Internet for electronic business applications, I address two applications often used in electronic business: electronic mail (E-mail) and secure access of web pages using the SSL protocol. It should be noted that all the facts presented in the note are well-known to security experts and not new. It might however be helpful for the ordinary of electronic commerce to become more aware of some security-related problems of the Internet. [less ▲]

A new method for distributed resource allocation is called market{based control. Market{based control systems im- itate the behavior of an economic system; some applica- tions of this method exist in the eld of distributed com- puter and telecommunications systems. A new eld of application is the control of dynamic systems. In this work, the market{based approach is used for optimal con- trol which is still one of the important methods of control theory. Unfortunately, even though most researchers in this area deal with complex systems, they omit the math- ematical background. For this reason, our work focuses on a mathematical description of a market{based control algorithm especially for linear dynamic systems in order to explain the relationship between economic and control systems. It is shown that the optimal control problem can be considered as a special kind of a resource distribution problem. Therefore, the fact that in economic systems re- sources are optimally distributed in a decentralized man- ner even in large and complex systems is very interesting. The obtained algorithm in the case of a linear system is characterized by a very e ective computation and easy understanding. [less ▲]

We analyze the transmission of highly charged ions (HCI) through microcapillaries. The interaction of an HCI with the interval surface of the capillary is treated within the framework of linear response. In the limiting case of an ideal conducting cylindrical surface, the interaction reduces to a classical image potential. For Neq+ projectiles transmitting through a Ni capillary calculations for the impact parameter distribution and angular distribution of hollow atoms are presented. We find the fraction of transmitted projectiles which are partially neutralized in good agreement with recent experiments. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. [less ▲]

For determinations of the ultimate tension capacity of a piled foundation, often use is made of empirical relations between soil strength and skin friction. The disadvantage of these (analytical) methods is that they are in general not very accurate for most soil conditions. Therefore a numerical method for determination of the ultimate bearing capacity is presented here. Results were successively compared with actual test results which were measured during pile tests. It was found that the numerical model assessed the actual pile bearing capacity more closely than analytical models based on empirical calculation rules. Therefore lower factors of safety can be accepted. The behaviour of the (virtual) interface between pile and soil significantly influences the behaviourof the pile. [less ▲]

A key issue in mobile robot applications involves building a map of the environment to be used by the robot for localization and path planning. We propose a framework for robot map building which is based on principal component regression, a statistical method for extracting low-dimensional dependencies between a set of input and target values. A supervised set of robot positions (inputs) and associated high-dimensional sensor measurements (targets) are assumed. A set of globally uncorrelated features of the original sensor measurements are obtained by applying principal component analysis on the target set. A parametrized model of the conditional density function of the sensor features given the robot positions is built based on an unbiased estimation procedure that fits interpolants for both the mean and the variance of each feature independently. The simulation results show that the average Bayesian localization error is an increasing function of the principal component index. [less ▲]

The transmission of highly charged ions (HCI) through microcapillaries is investigated. The interaction of an HCI with the internal surface of the capillary is described in terms of a classical image potential. For Neq+ projectiles transmitted through a Ni capillary the impact parameter distribution and angular distribution of ions leaving the microcapillary is determined. We consider both a narrowly focussed and a dispersive incident beam relative to the acceptance angle of the capillary. Our results are compared with recent experiments. [less ▲]
