[more ▼] We develop a theoretical model for the recently observed threshold for potential sputtering of LiF by slow singly and doubly charged ions. The threshold coincides with the potential energy to create a cold hole in the valence band of LiF by resonant neutralization. We calculate the level shift of the incident ion and the deformation of the valence band under the influence of the projectile. Resonant neutralization becomes possible for ions with recombination energies larger than 10 eV in agreement with the experimental findings. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. [more ▼] The most often used operator to aggregate criteria in decision making problems is the classical weighted arithmetic mean. In many problems however, the criteria considered interact, and a substitute to the weighted arithmetic mean has to be adopted. We show that, under rather natural conditions, the discrete Choquet integral is an adequate aggregation operator that extends the weighted arithmetic mean by the taking into consideration of the interaction among criteria. The axiomatic that supports the Choquet integral is presented in detail. [less ▲] Detailed reference viewed: 151 (3 UL)![]() Marichal, Jean-Luc ![]() in Mayor, Gaspar; Suñer, Jaume (Eds.) When interacting criteria are considered, this condition might be violated and a substitute to the classical weighted mean has to be adopted. The Choquet integral seems to be an adequate aggregation operator that extends the weighted mean and the ordered weighted average (OWA). The axiomatics that supports the Choquet integral is presented as well as its behavioral analysis with regards to veto and favor effects, degree of disjunction and measure of dispersion. The interaction of an HCI with the interval surface of the capillary is treated within the framework of linear response. In the limiting case of an ideal conducting cylindrical surface, the interaction reduces to a classical image potential. For Neq+ projectiles transmitting through a Ni capillary calculations for the impact parameter distribution and angular distribution of hollow atoms are presented. [more ▼] A key issue in mobile robot applications involves building a map of the environment to be used by the robot for localization and path planning. We propose a framework for robot map building which is based on principal component regression, a statistical method for extracting low-dimensional dependencies between a set of input and target values. A supervised set of robot positions (inputs) and associated high-dimensional sensor measurements (targets) are assumed. A set of globally uncorrelated features of the original sensor measurements are obtained by applying principal component analysis on the target set. A parametrized model of the conditional density function of the sensor features given the robot positions is built based on an unbiased estimation procedure that fits interpolants for both the mean and the variance of each feature independently. The simulation results show that the average Bayesian localization error is an increasing function of the principal component index. [more ▼] For determinations of the ultimate tension capacity of a piled foundation, often use is made of empirical relations between soil strength and skin friction. The disadvantage of these (analytical) methods is that they are in general not very accurate for most soil conditions. Therefore a numerical method for determination of the ultimate bearing capacity is presented here. Results were successively compared with actual test results which were measured during pile tests. It was found that the numerical model assessed the actual pile bearing capacity more closely than analytical models based on empirical calculation rules. Therefore lower factors of safety can be accepted. The behaviour of the (virtual) interface between pile and soil significantly influences the behaviourof the pile. [more ▼] A new method for distributed resource allocation is called market{based control. Market{based control systems im- itate the behavior of an economic system; some applica- tions of this method exist in the eld of distributed com- puter and telecommunications systems. A new eld of application is the control of dynamic systems. In this work, the market{based approach is used for optimal con- trol which is still one of the important methods of control theory. Unfortunately, even though most researchers in this area deal with complex systems, they omit the math- ematical background. For this reason, our work focuses on a mathematical description of a market{based control algorithm especially for linear dynamic systems in order to explain the relationship between economic and control systems. It is shown that the optimal control problem can be considered as a special kind of a resource distribution problem. Therefore, the fact that in economic systems re- sources are optimally distributed in a decentralized man- ner even in large and complex systems is very interesting. The obtained algorithm in the case of a linear system is characterized by a very e ective computation and easy understanding. The concept was initially introduced by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) (WHO, 1991). In 1992, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) elaborated the underlying concept and introduced the term “substantial equivalence” (OECD, 1993). The application of substantial equivalence has since been reinforced by international expert bodies (WHO, 1995; FAO, 1996) and has been adopted by regulatory authorities in most countries. [more ▼] This paper presents semi-global sufficient stability conditions of limit cycles for relay feedback systems. Local stability conditions exist. These are based on analyzing the linear part of the Poincare map. We know that when a certain limit cycle satisfies those local conditions, a neighborhood around the limit cycle exists such that any trajectory starting in this neighborhood converges to the limit cycle as time goes to infinity. However, tools to characterize this neighborhood do not exist. In this work, we present conditions, in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMI), that guarantee the stability of a limit cycle in a reasonably large set around it. These results differ from previous local results as they take into account the high order terms of the Poincare map. [more ▼] Comparisons have been made between the channel currents in GaAs hESFETs prepared on GaAs buffer layers prepared at normal and low temperatures. All devices made on LT buffer layers had saturated channel currents which were about 20% of similar devices on a normal buffer. An attempt was made to remove Ga vacanciies from the LT buffer by a high temperature anneal step before the epitaxial layer was prepared. This had no effect in increasing the channel current. In all cases the pinchoiy voltage was unchanged indicating constancy of the channel thickness and donor concentration. It is concluded that the loss of current is due to a loss of mobile charge through trapping.
