Annotated Legal Documents on Islam in Luxembourg consist of an annotated book of currently valid legal documents affecting the status of Islam and Muslims in Luxembourg. By legal documents are meant the texts of legislation, including relevant secondary legislation, as well as significant court decisions. Each legal text will be preceded by an introduction describing the historical, political and legal circumstances of its adoption, plus a short paragraph summarising its content. The legal texts will be published in the original language while the annotations and supporting material will be in English. The focus of the book is on the religious dimensions of being Muslim in Luxembourg, i.e. on individuals' access to practise their religious obligations and on the ability to organise and manifest their religious life. It's a part of a project will cover the 28 member states of the European Union (including Croatia), Norway and Switzerland plus the European Union and the European Court of Justice. [less ▲]

The subject of gender and education is gaining momentum and attracting increasing interest around the world. In Luxembourg, however, it is still often marginal in the public – and professional – eye. The aim of this volume is to increase the visibility of gender and education by bringing together perspectives from Luxembourg and the international community. Different authors will contribute to considerations of how the discourse can be applied to – and amplified in – the Luxembourg context. Academics, practitioners/professionals and activists will shed light on the issues at stake in thought-provoking pieces, which will provide an inspirational starting point for future theory and practice. As media environments and communication practices evolve over time, so do theoretical concepts. This book analyzes some of the most well-known and fiercely discussed concepts of the digital age from a historical perspective, showing how many of them have pre-digital roots and how they have changed and still are constantly changing in the digital era. Written by leading authors in media and communication studies, the chapters historicize 16 concepts that have become central in the digital media literature, focusing on three main areas. The first part, Technologies and Connections, historicises concepts like network, media convergence, multimedia, interactivity and artificial intelligence. The second one is related to Agency and Politics and explores global governance, datafication, fake news, echo chambers, digital media activism. The last one, Users and Practices, is finally devoted to telepresence, digital loneliness, amateurism, user generated content, fandom and authenticity. The book aims to shed light on how concepts emerge and are co-shaped, circulated, used and reappropriated in different contexts. It argues for the need for a conceptual media and communication history that will reveal new developments without concealing continuities and it demonstrates how the analogue/digital dichotomy is often a misleading one. The contributions to this book examine the two main asymmetries of the Euro Area as they have intensified during the second decade of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU): the first between monetary union (more supranational governance) versus ‘economic’ union (less centralised governance); the second between those Euro Area member states of the so-called ‘core’ and those of the ‘periphery’. EMU stands as one of the European Union’s (EU) flagship integration achievements. Set up in 1999, with the large majority of EU member states at the time, EMU was described as ‘asymmetrical’ even prior to its start. From the outset, it involved asymmetrical integration in monetary and ‘economic’ union. Although a major element of the blueprint that paved the way for the final stage of EMU, the concept of ‘economic’ union was insufficiently developed. The second decade of the single currency gave rise to a second asymmetry, namely one between those Euro Area member states of the ‘core’ and those of the ‘periphery’. The ten contributions to this volume speak to one or both of these asymmetries, covering the major political, political economy and policy dimensions of EMU and the ongoing debates about necessary policy and institutional reforms to overcome these asymmetries and bolster Euro Area stability. The outbreak of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) Crisis in 2020 created unprecedented socio-economic challenges for Euro Area member states, heightening the perceived urgency of reform. [less ▲]

Regional development banks (RDB) have become increasingly important in the world economy, but have also been relatively under-researched to date. This timely volume addresses this lack of attention by providing a comprehensive, comparative, and empirically informed analysis of their origins, evolution, and contemporary role in the world economy through to the second decade of the twenty-first century. In Regional Development Banks in the World Economy, the editors provide an analytical framework that includes a revised categorisation of RDB by geographic operation and function. Part one offers detailed analyses of the origins, evolution, and contemporary role of the major RDB, including the Inter-American Development Bank, the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, the Central American Bank, the Andean Development Corporation, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. Part two offers comparative analyses of key topics on RDB, examining their initial design and their changing business models, their shifting role in promoting policies supported by the United States as hegemon and the private sector. The volume ends with a critical reflection on the role played by RDB to date and a strong defence of the need for these banks in an increasingly complex world economy. [less ▲]

The suggestion to “align international taxation with value creation” first emerged in the context of the OECD BEPS Project aimed at tackling aggressive tax planning strategies resulting in base erosion and profit shifting. The concept of “value creation” was then further relied on in the broader discussion that followed about the impact of digitalization on the global economy generally and the fair allocation of taxes between countries in this new environment. Although the idea – or the guiding principle – that profits should be taxed where economic activities occur and where value is expected to be created initially received a relatively large support, it rapidly became clear (at least to academics) that there would be no obvious answer to the question “where is value being created?” in a manner that would be relevant for (international) tax purposes, inter alia in view of the different models of value creation within corporate entities. Based on 9 thematic reports (offering an interdisciplinary discussion of the concept of value creation mostly from an international perspective) and on 23 national reports (focusing on the meaning of value creation in domestic tax law), this book seeks to contribute to the discussion on whether the concept of value creation is viable, both theoretically and in practice, as a criterion for the allocation of taxing rights under a modernized international tax framework. “You never knew. That was his power.” These words, which picture Keyser Söze in The Usual Suspects (1995), also describe a specific mode of action typical of evil protagonists in popular culture of the 20th and 21st centuries, namely their non-appearance. One can indeed distinguish several types of evil in popular culture: on the one hand, the representatives of the “other” in the sense of a political enemy (the stereotypical character of the Nazi, the Communist, the Arab terrorist, etc.); on the other hand, the figure of the faceless, disguised, not (stereotypically) apparent evil. The secret organization that James Bond fights against in several films is significantly named “Specter”. Similarly, Lord Voldemort remains faceless and ghostlike in the Harry Potter series. These figures do not represent the “other” as a clearly identifiable political antagonist, but an “other other” whose unknowability and namelessness are an essential part to his or her power and (non-)identity. The “bad guys” can always be interpreted as reflections of a political order: by not adhering to the moral, social, and political rules of the community, they reflect on the contingency of these rules and may also try to enforce alternative models of coexistence through violence. It would therefore be interesting to ask to what extent the faceless figure of evil represents a political model without being clearly identified to a political or ideological “other”? In the context of media diversity in popular culture in the 20th and 21st centuries, the portrayal of faceless figures of evil produces an equally wide variety of aesthetic manifestations. The question of the representations of evil thus necessarily exists at the interface between politics and poetics. This issue of Cultural Express wants to examine this interface in popular and youth literature, fantasy, science-fiction, horror, crime fiction, movies, TV series, songs, comics, graphic novels, video games, etc. [less ▲]

The corona crisis has put a spotlight on the importance of science in modern societies. But not only medicine and the ‘hard’ sciences, also the humanities and social sciences are called for: Which kinds of political rationality determine action in the global crisis? How does ‘Corona’ influence our understanding of borders, migration and international relations? How can we learn from the past? What are the challenges we face in organizing everyday life, teaching and research, art and culture, or in dealing with ourselves? And can digital technologies help us to compensate for the negative effects of the crisis? By trying to find answers to these (and other) questions, the volume brings together contributions from experts at the University of Luxembourg in the fields of psychology and social sciences, literature and linguistics, cultural studies, political science, border studies and educational science. It opens up a panorama of the research taking place at the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, and demonstrates the kinds of contributions these disciplines make when dealing with crises, and in shaping of society in general. At the same time, it reflects on the limits of knowledge these disciplines encounter in the face of a global challenge. [less ▲]

Inclusive education has become a leading theme internationally over the past several decades, as it addresses key issues, often controversial, of exclusion/inclusion, learning opportunities, and educational equality and justice. Among international organizations as well as supranational governments, we find an increasing emphasis on recognizing diversity and enabling education for all. This is visible in the Salamanca Declaration (1994), the overall “education-for-all” agenda, the Sustainable Developments Goals (e.g., Education, SDG 4), and the worldwide ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (e.g., Article 24 on Education), which mandates among state parties the establishment of an inclusive education system across levels, from early childhood to lifelong learning. This frame of reference is not only significant in terms of definitions and contents but also in the context of the strengthening of world society. The world societal level is not the same as what occurs in the relations between nation states, as important as such learning in policies and practices may be but extends beyond. This is evident in the definition of “inclusion” that has become significant internationally as a category signifying attempts to guarantee access and participation in different levels of education systems, but one that has contrasting and divergent understandings, implications, and implementation consequences between national and local contexts. The goal of participation that follows normatively and legally from such understandings of inclusion, is recontextualized differently, sometimes even paradoxically, when in fact segregated and separate settings are extended under the banner of inclusion. In Germany, for example, despite inclusion discourse flowing from such international agendas that focus on processes of integration and participation, the structures, cultures, and practices that disadvantage and disable continue to exist or even become strengthened. Even if the myriad dimensions of diversity are increasingly discussed and intersectional approaches become more important, the emphasis on difference of disability or “special educational needs” continues. In educational research, numerous publications have delineated the establishment of inclusive education from diverse perspectives. Over the past decade in particular, this has occurred in relation to the UN CRPD, which also implies a connection to the world society-frame; however, theorization and in-depth empirical analyses are lacking to explain more recent developments on multiple levels. Even for nation-states, few systematic and comparative studies have analyzed the diverse forms of inclusive education in different contexts. The consequence has been a divergence between the national discourses of inclusive education, for example, in the German-speaking countries, that remain focused on special educational needs, and the more global discourse that understands inclusive education in human rights terms and a key developmental process in democracies. Although some recent comparative research projects and dissertations provide insights into specific country contexts, a more comprehensive publication that collects such research results of international inclusive educational research has been lacking. Furthermore, the opportunity presents itself to extend the dialogue through a world society perspective on inclusion to reflect global inequalities via integrating case studies from the Global South. International and intercultural perspectives enable the investigation of structures, cultures and practices of different countries to the crucial comparison of educational processes. This is especially necessary in the case of inclusive education, whether as a source of inspiration, a reflexive critique of taken-for-grantedness or as a means to identify disparities and social inequalities. Thus, in several dozen chapters, the Handbook Inclusion International presents diverse global, national, and local perspectives on inclusive education. [less ▲]

The visual turn recovers new pasts. With a focus on education, this book seeks to present a body of reflections that question a certain historicism. It renovates historiographical debate about how to conceptualize visual media while presenting new themes and methods for researchers. Images are interrogated as part of régimes of the visible, of a history of visual technologies and visual practices. Considering the socio-material quality of the image, the analysis moves away from the use of images as mere illustrations of written arguments, and seriously questions the life and death of artifacts – that is, their particular historicity. Questioning the visual and material evidence in this ways means considering how, when, and in which régime of the visible it has come to be considered as a source, and what this means for the questions contemporary researchers may ask. Marked by expanding and diverse forms of collaboration and competition, the investigation of contemporary developments in higher education and science systems need additional attention. Therefore, this research topic provides a forum for multidisciplinary exchange of pioneering research ideas and dialogues as well as complementary research that contribute to the field of knowledge, and aspires to support innovative, cutting-edge, and policy relevant research at the nexus of higher education research and science studies (HERSS), bibliometrics, scientometrics, and computational social sciences –traditionally separate communities focusing either on small scale and in-depth case studies or on large-scale “big data” research. Researchers bringing together the aforementioned scientific communities can be classified as important bridge-builders to bolster the growing research and current initiatives in the field of Science of Science between diverse scientific communities and the wider public. Especially sociology with its ambition to pair classic and innovative theoretical approaches with new methods to analyze and to qualitatively interpret quantitative “big data” with machine learning algorithms initiates a fascinating and promising approach to interlink the still separate scientific communities in favor of a more holistic understanding of Science of Science. In this Research Topic -as part of the Lecture Series: Science of Science in the Spotlight at the University of Luxembourg- we invite members of these diverse scientific communities and researchers who are working at the intersection as “translators” to present their latest research. We aim to promote and provide evidence-based insights into the drivers of multidisciplinary and international research and innovation, networks, and collaboration, including higher education developments, scientific knowledge production (e.g. publications, citations, patents), science capacity-building, research evaluation, policy reforms, cultural and societal change processes, and institutions and organizations as well as scientists’ geographical mobility, gender inequalities and career paths in science, and of migrant scientists. Furthermore, we want to stimulate debate on theoretical in-depth context knowledge and innovative methodological approaches (for example social network analysis and machine learning algorithms), and on data acquisition and analysis -long identified as an important research gap in Science of Science. The aim of this research topic is to consolidate common themes and research interests to maintain and improve collaborations among researchers with different academic backgrounds and expertise from a wide range of disciplines. We welcome contributions that address the aforementioned topics and encourage to combine theory-driven, empirically-rich, multidisciplinary, historical, and comparative research, including informed and evidence-based interpretations of research results that illustrate the importance of the topic for researchers, policymakers, funding agencies, university managers, and other public research organizations. Who were the Luxembourgish legionnaires? What were they doing in France? Why did they decide to enrol? How have they been portrayed and remembered? Incorporating the most recent scholarship on the topic and covering a timeline spanning from the early-19th century to the interwar period, with a particular focus on WW1, the book explores the intersecting histories of the French Foreign Legion and of the Luxembourgish emigrations in France. With an emphasis on personal stories, twenty specialist articles explore the role of the Luxembourgish legionnaires in the national and transnational history, their social and cultural milieu, the migratory patterns that lead to their engagement, the war experience and its aftermath, and the ambiguities of their representation and self-representation in the press, official statements, and popular culture. The purpose of this anthology is to better understand the many different developments of physical education and school sports after almost two decades of the new 21st century and to better compare the current status of physical education and school sports (PESS) across European countries. For better comparisons a basic set of eight criteria (A-H) have been identified for each chapter of a country review. The book is divided into three parts. Part A includes general items of development of PESS in Europe. Part B comprises 17 different country reviews all written by national experts. Part C documents comparative analysis of the country reviews about national school systems; development of compulsory PESS; aims and objectives of current PESS curricula; promotion of active learning with physical activity; extra-curricular settings at school and outside schools in collaboration with active communities; purpose, structure, aims and objectives of PESS teacher training; current research and findings of PESS studies and finally, recommendations for new EU-based PESS research studies. This book provides a concise, practical guide to the European Union’s Anti-Tax Avoidance Directive (ATAD). Presenting unique insights into the ATAD’s five specific anti-avoidance rules, its chapters explain the background of those rules, the directive’s interactions with relevant jurisprudence, and the challenges posed to the ATAD’s interpretation and implementation in domestic law. Key features include: • critical, article-by-article analysis of the ATAD • contextual information on the legislative environment in which the ATAD operates, embedding it in the wider landscape of CJEU jurisprudence • insights into the day-to-day application of the ATAD rules in practice • contributions from leading academics and practitioners in the field of tax law • examples of the challenges to the interpretation and implementation of ATAD, taken from a range of EU Member States. European and international tax advisors, along with policy makers in the field of tax law, will find this book to be a comprehensive yet accessible guide to the ATAD and its correct application. Those who carry out research in European tax law can also benefit from this book’s critical approach to the ATAD and the questions that surround anti-tax avoidance legislation in the European Union. The volume brings together the work of sixteen scholars focused on the diverse debates surrounding the construction and operation of Banking Union (BU), and its necessary reform. BU represents one of the most important developments in European integration since the launch of Monetary Union. Furthermore, the design of the BU agreed between 2012 and 2014 was a messy compromise among EU member states. It is not surprising then that BU has sparked a lively academic debate and triggered an ever-growing number of publications from different disciplinary backgrounds. The first wave of academic work on BU focuses upon the economic rationale underpinning the supranationalisation of control over banking — regulation, supervision, support and resolution — and the political dynamics and legal issues that shaped the design of the Union agreed. This volume is located at the intersection of this first phase of academic research and a second stage which analyses the functioning of the different elements of BU. New research questions are triggered by the albeit limited empirical evidence on BU’s implementation and operation. Contributions to this second wave of research attempt to identify potentially dangerous lacunae and contribute to on-going reform debates. [less ▲]

This book focuses on the history of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), from its origins in the mid-19th century to nowadays. ITU was the fi rst international organization ever and still plays a crucial role in managing global telecommunications today. Putting together some of the most relevant scholars in the fi eld of transnational communications, the book covers the history of ITU from 1865 to digital times in a truly global perspective, taking into account several technologies like the telegraph, the telephone, cables, wireless, radio, television, satellites, mobile phone, the internet and others. The main goal is to identify the long-term strategies of regulation and the techno-diplomatic manoeuvres taken inside ITU, from convincing the majority of the nations to establish the offi cial seat of the Telegraph Union bureau in Switzerland in the 1860s, to contrasting the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance (supported by US and ICANN). History of the International Telecommunication Union is a trans-disciplinary text and can be interesting for scholars and students in the fi elds of telecommunications, media, international organizations, transnational communication, diplomacy, political economy of communication, STS, and others. It has the ambition to become a reference point in the history of ITU and, at the same time, just the fi rst comprehensive step towards a longer, inter-technological, political and cultural history of transnational communications to be written in the future. [less ▲]

For a decade now, borders in Europe have been back on the political agenda. Border research has responded and is breaking new ground in thinking about and exploring borders. This book follows this development and strengthens a perspective that is interested in life realities and that focuses on everyday cultural experiences of borders. The authors reconstruct such experiences in the context of different forms of migration and mobility as well as language contact situations and are sensitive to the freedom of the participants. In this way, they empirically identify everyday cultural usage or appropriation strategies of borders as vastly different experiences of borders. The readers of this volume will gain insights into current developments in border research and life realities in Europe where borders are (made) relevant. With contributions by Christian Wille, Birte Nienaber, Carsten Yndigegn, Isabelle Pigeron-Piroth, Rachid Belkacem, Ursula Roos, Elisabeth Boesen, Ariela House, Ignacy Jóźwiak, Corinne Martin, Erika Kalocsányiová, Xosé-Afonso Álvarez, Konstanze Jungbluth, Florian Dost, Nicole Richter, Dominik Gerst. In November 2017, Council Regulation (EU) 2017/1939 implementing enhanced cooperation on the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (‘EPPO’) entered into force. The EPPO is a new body of the European Union that will investigate and prosecute perpetrators of criminal offences affecting the financial interests of the Union. Being the first EU authority to exercise direct powers vis-à-vis individuals in the field of criminal law, the EPPO represents a paradigm shift in the EU criminal justice field and requires several amendments of national legislation. The Member States that take part in the EPPO enhanced cooperation are currently in the process of implementing the Regulation in order to make their criminal justice systems compatible with its provisions, and allow the EPPO to carry out its activities once the Office will be up and running. Building on the Symposium that took place in Coimbra on 29–30 March 2017, which was co-organised by the European Criminal Law Academic Network (ECLAN) and the Instituto Jurídico of the Law Faculty of the University of Coimbra, this book offers a comprehensive overview of crucial aspects of this ambitious and debated EU initiative, in both its European and national dimensions. It aims to analyse key issues related to the functioning and legitimacy of the EPPO from a European perspective, such as EPPO independence and material competence, judicial review of its acts, and protection of fundamental rights in the framework of EPPO proceedings. At the same time, it also represents the first publication that, in the wake of the Regulation’s adoption, discusses the challenges that the implementation of this EU legal instrument is currently raising in some Member States, namely Austria, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. This volume analyses Belgian garrisons in the Rhineland and Westphalia after the Second World War. They are analysed as contact zones that clearly indicate the political, economic, societal and military consequences of European integration for daily coexistence. The book’s contributions focus on mechanisms and catalysts of entanglement, dissolution and coexistence in local spaces, which did not relocate transnational contacts within Europe to national borderlines, but permanently (re-) configured them in a confined space. How do transnational contacts take place? How have they changed in the face of different geopolitical and geostrategic circumstances? This volume intends to give European integration history new impetus by rediscovering European regional history. [less ▲]

Border research has undergone profound changes in the last few decades, which has changed the study of national borders as unchallenged phenomena. This reorientation is based on constructivist approaches and queries the processes of establishing, relativising, shifting or overcoming borders. It was based on this conception of borders as social constructions that in 2019 Florian Weber (Saarland University), Christian Wille (University of Luxembourg), Beate Caesar (TU Kaiserslautern) and Julian Hollstegge (University of Bayreuth) launched their book project "Geographien der Grenzen" (Geographies of Borders). The anthology, which was published in 2020 discusses the connection between spaces, orders and interdependencies. The authors from the spatial, social sciences and cultural studies choose different approaches to borders and analyze their (re)production processes as “geographies of borders”. By doing so, they also focus on borders other than nation-state borders, such as city-country hybrid differentiations. The volume therefore examines from various theoretical and thematic perspectives the question of how and which “geographies of border” can be (re)constructed in the interplay of various destabilizations and (re)stabilizations of borders.

Doch was kommt danach? Im Fokus stehen u.a.

[less ▲]

This collection of essays celebrates the 70th birthday of Professor Roland Naul. The chapters, written by colleagues and friends, illustrate the development of sport and physical activity research over four decades. They give an overview and update of relevant fields that determined the academic work of Roland Naul and new insights. Chapters have been grouped under the following aspects: Roland Naul as Schola Ludens Europaea, with a focus on his special fields of interest and research; general education and sport education including the relationship between sport pedagogy and social pedagogy; old and new challenges for the Olympic Games movement, as described from the perspective of different countries; health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA), a key policy area which Roland Naul has helped shape in the European Union; and finally, sport policy on a local level. This commemorative publication acknowledges the merits of Roland Naul for European studies in physical education and youth sports, as well as for the sport policy context in Europe. [less ▲]

The 50th anniversary of the death in 1967 of the famous music teacher, ethnomusicologist and composer Zoltán Kodály reminded us that another renowned music pedagogue, Leo Kestenberg (1882-1962), was born in the same year as Kodály. As such, the joint Kodály Kestenberg Conference provided a welcome opportunity not only to address aspects of music pedagogical and biographical research which had hitherto received a limited amount of attention, but also to highlight a number of key moments in history, and the resulting impact these had had on music pedagogy. The significant level of international interest which music educators showed in the Kodály Kestenberg Conference fulfilled the organisers' desire to create a forum for the free exchange ideas. It also enabled participants to review our commonalities and differences and to look beyond our individual national developments and evaluate the methods and concepts of two significant personalities in the history of musical education in the first half of the 20th century. The sheer diversity of historical and current topics in music education research both inside and outside of Europe, not only reflects the fact that in the 21st century, music education research has established and profiled itself in a wide range of sub-disciplines in addition to revealing new fields of inter-disciplinary research. The effectiveness of reforms initiated and implemented by Kodály and Kestenberg extend to the present day and continue to influence discussions around the future perspectives of music education. This is illustrated by the example of formal and informal learning in the field of elementary music pedagogy. The "Century of the Child" proclaimed in 1900 by the Swedish reform pedagogue Ellen Key (1849–1926) has left its mark on music education through reformers such as Kodály and Kestenberg into the 21st century. This conference book contains articles which are subdivided in five sub-categories: (1) The function of Music Education, (2) The Historical Era of Kodály and Kestenberg, (3) Learning and Instruction, (4) Assessment Technologies in Music Education and (5) Effects of Music Training. The contributors come from six different countries namely, Austria, England, Germany, Hungary, Israel and Luxembourg. The editors would like to record their thanks to both: (1) the Pedagogical Faculty of the John von Neumann University, Kecskemét and the dean Dr. Fülöp Tamás and the vice-dean Dr. Sági Norberta for hosting the conference, (2) the International Leo Kestenberg Society. The editors also acknowledge that this research is supported by EFOP-3.6.1- 16-2016-00006 “The development and enhancement of the research potential at John von Neumann University” project. The Project is supported by the Hungarian Government and co-financed by the European Social Fund. The editors finally thank Ms. Caroline Reuter from the University of Luxembourg for the review of the layout. [less ▲]

Time is a crucial dimension in the application of any law. In tax law, however, where an environment characterized by rapid change on the national, European, and international levels complicates the provision of accurate legal advice, timing is particularly sensitive. This book is the first to analyse the relationship between time and three key areas of tax: treaties, EU law, and constitutional law issues, such as legal certainty and individual rights. The issues arising from the interplay of these various areas are analysed from a both academic and practical angle, providing important insights independent of the concrete national framework within which tax rules are applied. Ubi servi erant? [less ▲]

Sixteen scholars from across the globe come together in Charles Dickens as an Agent of Change to show how Dickens was (and still is) the consummate change agent. His works, bursting with restless energy in the Inimitable's protean style, registered and commented on the ongoing changes in the Victorian world while the Victorians' fictional and factional worlds kept (and keep) changing. The essays from notable Dickens scholars—Malcolm Andrews, Matthias Bauer, Joel J. Brattin, Doris Feldmann, Herbert Foltinek, Robert Heaman, Michael Hollington, Bert Hornback, Norbert Lennartz, Chris Louttit, Jerome Meckier, Nancy Aycock Metz, David Paroissien, Christopher Pittard, and Robert Tracy—suggest the many ways in which the notion of change has found entry into and is negotiated in Dickens' works through four aspects: social change, political and ideological change, literary change, and cultural change. An afterword by the late Edgar Rosenberg adds a personal account of how Dickens changed the life of one eminent Dickensian. [less ▲]
