Gabbay, Dov M. UL; Schlechta, K.

in Review of Symbolic Logic (The) (2008), 1(03), 267304

For nonmonotonic logics, Cumulativity is an important logical rule. We show here that Cumulativity fans out into an infinity of different conditions, if the domain is not closed under finite unions.

As cancer is a multifactor disease, it may require treatment with compounds able to target multiple intracellular components. We summarize here how curcumin is able to modulate many components of intracellular signaling pathways implicated in inflammation, cell proliferation and invasion and to induce genetic modulations eventually leading to tumor cell death. Clinical applications of this natural compound were initially limited by its low solubility and bioavailability in both plasma and tissues but combination with adjuvant and delivery vehicles was reported to largely improve bio-availability of curcumin. Moreover, curcumin was reported to act in synergism with several natural compounds or synthetic agents commonly used in chemotherapy. Based on this, curcumin could thus be considered as a good candidate for cancer prevention and treatment when used alone or in combination with other conventional treatments. [less ▲]

Long before the current vogue for acknowledging contexts and contextualisation processes in the research process, Johannisson’s pioneering scholarship provoked different conceptual and methodological experimentations that were oriented to context. Bengt’s unceasing curiosity for understanding how particular localities, communities, networks, industrial districts, regions and families produce, embed and enact entrepreneurial activities, is testament to his belief in the importance of the ‘organising context’ for entrepreneurship. In this essay, I discuss how Bengt’s theoretical and methodological sensitivity to context has provided a strong legacy for the entrepreneurship field, not least because it has opened up possibilities for innovative research methodologies that locate the researcher as situated actor but also because it emphasises participative and relational forms of entrepreneurial action that reduce self-other boundaries. This paper discusses the relationship between the formation of a currency area and the use of voluntary fiscal transfers between countries. We show that there is a trade off between the benefits of flexible exchange rates and the additional risk sharing benefits of voluntary transfers that can be sustained in a currency area. We show that whether a currency area is beneficial or not will depend on the magnitude of economic parameter values. In particular, we show that in a simple two country model and for a plausible set of economic parameter values, a currency area is optimal. [less ▲]

In this paper, we measure currency carry trade funding risk using stock market volatility and crash risk in Japan, the main funding currency country. We show that the measures of funding risk in Japan can explain 42% of the monthly currency carry trade returns during our sample period, 2000-2011. In addition, they explain 64% of the monthly foreign exchange volatility in our sample of ten main currencies, 28% of the speculators' net currency futures positions in Australian dollar versus Japanese yen, skewness in currency returns and currency crashes. We present a theoretical model that is consistent with these findings. [less ▲]

This paper considers a simple stochastic model of international trade with three countries. Two of the tree countries are in an economic union. Comparisons are made between equilibrium welfare for these two countries under fixed and flexible exchange rate regimes. Within the model it is shown that flexible exchange rate regimes generate greater welfare. However, we then consider comparisons of welfare when the two countries also engage in some international assistance in order to share risk. Such risksharing is limited by enforcement constraints of cross border assistance. It is shown that, when one takes into account risk-sharing and limited commitment, fixed exchange rate regimes associated with a currency area can dominate flexible exchange rate regimes, which reverses the standard result. We consider a four-terminal setup of a two-dimensional topological insulator (quantum spin Hall insulator) with local tunneling between the upper and lower edges. The edge modes are modeled as helical Luttinger liquids and the electron-electron interactions are taken into account exactly. Using perturbation theory in the tunneling, we derive the cumulant generating function for the inter-edge current. We show that different possible transport channels give rise to different signatures in the current noise and current cross-correlations, which could be exploited in experiments to elucidate the interplay between electron-electron interactions and the helical nature of the edge states. The regulation of administrative procedures in the EU is currently a topic under much scruti-ny. This chapter addresses some of the debates regarding a possible innovative codification of EU administrative procedure law. It does so by looking at changing modes of delegation of powers for implementation of EU law and policy and the evolving legal context of the EU’s highly integrated multi-level system. The chapter therefore addresses questions such as which criteria should govern the exercise of powers delegated to the administration. It does so by looking at how effective decision-making procedures can be geared towards ensuring that basic constitutional principles and values are complied with in real-life administrative action. Answers to these questions also guide considerations about which elements should ideally be addressed by a possible codification of administrative procedure law of the EU. [less ▲]
