The HIV drug-resistance interpretation systems are used routinely throughout the world in a clinical setting. More knowledge is rapidly becoming available upon which clinical decisions could be made. This knowledge, information, data and evidence from many sources are combined within a Decision Support System (DSS) to provide coherent judgements on drug-susceptibility. At the core of the DSS is a HIV drug-resistance interpretation system incorporating knowledge from the principal systems (Stanford HIVdb, Rega, ANRS, Virolab ) in use throughout the world. We describe an improved rule-based language which has adequate expressiveness and enjoys a fully-specified, formal semantics, allowing for automated reasoning over rule sets. Among the questions which can be addressed are: • Ambiguity: Is the rule set internally ambiguous? Does it allow more than one interpretation? • Completeness: Does the rule set have complete coverage? • Consistency: Are there rules in the set which make contradictory predictions? • Redundancy: Do some rules of a rule set subsume others? • Dissonance: How do rule sets differ in their predictions? • Predictive power: Can one rule set make more specific predictions than another or can it make predictions in cases where the other is silent? The formal language which we present has a well-defined semantics that will allow for making judgements of the above kinds using reasoning that is either completely automated or at least semi-automated. Furthermore recent findings have revealed the need to express multiplicative effects of certain mutations on drugs. The state of the art language for specifying HIV drug interpretation rules, ASI, in its present form, is limited to linear combinations of effects. In future work we will use Bayesian hierarchical modelling to make predictive distributions in the presence of uncertainty. The full chain of analysis will combine Bayesian hierarchical modelling with probabilistic decision analysis based on utility attribution and/or multi-objective optimisation of such quantities as cost,chance and duration of survival or quality-adjusted life years. We show both theoretically and numerically a connection between the smoothed finite element method (SFEM) and the virtual element method and use this approach to derive stable, cheap and optimally convergent polyhedral FEM.We show that the stiffness matrix computed with one subcell SFEM is identical to the consistency term of the virtual element method, irrespective of the topology of the element, as long as the shape functions vary linearly on the boundary. Using this connection, we propose a new stable approach to strain smoothing for polygonal/polyhedral elements where, instead of using sub-triangulations, we are able to use one single polygonal/polyhedral subcell for each element while maintaining stability. For a similar number of degrees of freedom, the proposed approach is more accurate than the conventional SFEM with triangular subcells. The time to compute the stiffness matrix scales with the O.dof s/1:1 in case of the conventional polygonal FEM, while it scales as O.dof s/0:7 in the proposed approach. The accuracy and the convergence properties of the SFEM are studied with a few benchmark problems in 2D and 3D linear elasticity. [less ▲]

BACKGROUND: Virtual Communities of Practice (CoPs) are flexible communication and knowledge management tools enabling collaboration, sharing of best practice and professional development. There have been few studies that have looked at the use and usefulness of virtual CoPs in public health. METHODS: This project sought to gather the evidence and develop recommendations for the value of virtual CoPs in public health through a literature review, and through piloting two CoPs in obesity. The research aimed to find out how useful CoPs are in obesity prevention, what makes a CoP successful and what evaluation methods are appropriate. RESULTS: CoPs are composed of observers, passive and active contributors with a small group of 'super-users'. All users learn through reading and listening, even if they do not post. The CoPs had higher levels of reading activity as opposed to low levels of posting activity. Longer existence of CoPs usually means more active membership. There are complex reasons why users fail to engage in knowledge sharing. Success of a CoP is creating an online environment where users feel comfortable. CoPs need administrative support and facilitation. Champions play a vital role. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence shows some encouraging results about the value of CoPs in enabling collaboration and information sharing. Despite low membership numbers of the obesity CoPs piloted, members see value and suggest improvements. Findings suggest that success comes from leadership, champions, and larger networks with more posting activity. Mixed methods of quantitative and qualitative research are appropriate in measuring the use and impact of CoPs. [less ▲]

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a new generation of cloud service in which users operating systems execute in a cloud data center. Users can access their desktops and applications by using thin client devices. This thin client is consisting of only a screen attached with low power CPU. This new paradigm of delivering remote desktop provides benefits in terms of flexibility, cost reduction, data security and energy saving which are the green benefits from using VDI. VDI becomes an important technology in green computing and energy saving. In this paper, we present and review the green benefits for using VDI in large and small organizations. In this study, we describe the results of a series of co-creation workshops in museums with the goal of designing future digital cultural collections. Ranging from exhibition teasers to comprehensive virtual galleries, digital collections are an increasingly prominent feature of many museum websites but remain a largely unexplored facet of the visitor experience. Building on research in museum experience design, which suggests that involving the public in the development of on-site museum spaces and technologies supports better engagement, we investigated how this translates into digital-only contexts. We invited members of the public (N = 12) to the Luxembourg National Museum of History and Art for a series of design jams to investigate how non-experts envision the future of digital interactivity with museums through a series of ideation and rapid prototyping activities. Our analysis of the workshops and resulting prototypes reveals the design space of digital collections across three continuums of experience: individual/social, creation/consumption, and complementary/standalone. We conclude with design implications, namely how museum professionals can apply these dimensions to the design and implementation of digital collections. [less ▲]

A multitude of factors contribute to complex diseases and can be measured with ‘omics’ methods. Databases facilitate data interpretation for underlying mechanisms. Here, we describe the Virtual Metabolic Human (VMH, www.vmh.life) database encapsulating current knowledge of human metabolism within five interlinked resources ‘Human metabolism’, ‘Gut microbiome’, ‘Disease’, ‘Nutrition’, and ‘ReconMaps’. The VMH captures 5180 unique metabolites, 17 730 unique reactions, 3695 human genes, 255 Mendelian diseases, 818 microbes, 632 685 microbial genes and 8790 food items. The VMH’s unique features are (i) the hosting of the metabolic reconstructions of human and gut microbes amenable for metabolic modeling; (ii) seven human metabolic maps for data visualization; (iii) a nutrition designer; (iv) a user-friendly webpage and application-programming interface to access its content; (v) user feedback option for community engagement and (vi) the connection of its entities to 57 other web resources. The VMH represents a novel, interdisciplinary database for data interpretation and hypothesis generation to the biomedical community. [less ▲]

The nonlinear heat transfer process occurring during hybrid laser welding was simulated using the Virtual-node Polygonal Element (VPE) method within the framework of the Finite Element Method (FEM). To achieve robustness in large-scale welding simulations, a dynamic mesh refinement with quadtree and octree data structures was used in the welding region. Accuracy, convergence and efficiency were verified by solving two and three dimensional problems. It is found that the present VPE can successfully simulate the hybrid laser welding process with good accuracy and convergence. The adaptive refined mesh box can synchronously move with the welding heat source, which dramatically reduces the number of field nodes. Compared with the standard FEM,the VPEM requires only approximately 42% of the total degrees of freedom used in standard FEM for the same accuracy. Furthermore, we compare the computational cost and accuracy of the method to that of the finite element method, the edge based virtual node polygonal element/virtual node method, the edge-based Smoothed Point Interpolation Meshless Method (ES-PIM), the edge-based Element (ES-PIM) the Element Free Galerkin (EFG) method and the Meshless Local Petrove-Galerkin Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method. Compared to all those methods, the proposed scheme is found competitive in terms of computational cost versus accuracy, and benefit from a simple implementation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
