App permission requests are a control mechanism meant to help users oversee and safeguard access to data and resources on their smartphones. To decide whether to accept or deny such requests and make this consent valid, users need to understand the underlying reasons and judge the relevance of disclosing data in line with their own use of an app. This study investigates people’s certainty about app permission requests via an online survey with 400 representative participants of the UK population. The results demonstrate that users are uncertain about the necessity of granting app permissions for about half of the tested permission requests. This implies substantial privacy risks, which are discussed in the paper, resulting in a call for user-protecting interventions by privacy engineers. [less ▲]

The Campaign for the Abolition of Torture launched by Amnesty International in 1972 represents a key moment to understand the rise of human rights activism in the 1970s. This campaign not only contributed to promote Amnesty International as a popular and influential non-governmental organisation, but also set the modus operandi of this sort of activism: on-field missions, reports, emotional campaigns and lobbying on governments and international organisations. This paper presents the unbiased H∞ filter design for a class of stochastic systems with time-varying delay. The aim is to design an unbiased filter assuring exponential stability in mean square and a prescribed H∞ performance level for the filtering error system. Based on the application of the descriptor model transformation and free weighting matrices, delay-dependent sufficient conditions for stochastic systems with time-varying delay are proposed respectively in terms of linear matrix inequalities(LMIs). Numerical examples demonstrate the proposed approaches are effective and are an improvement over existing methods. [less ▲]

This paper presents the unbiased H∞ filter design for stochastic systems with data packet losses. By constructing unbiased filter, the complexity and computational burden of the real-time filtering process are reduced greatly. Numerical example demonstrates the proposed approaches are effective. [less ▲]

The problem of integrated volatility estimation for an Ito semimartingale is considered under discrete high-frequency observations in short time horizon. We provide an asymptotic expansion for the integrated volatility that gives us, in detail, the contribution deriving from the jump part. The knowledge of such a contribution allows us to build an unbiased version of the truncated quadratic variation, in which the bias is visibly reduced. In earlier results to have the original truncated realized volatility well-performed the condition β> 1 /2 (2− α) on β (that is such that (1/ n)^β is the threshold of the truncated quadratic variation) and on the degree of jump activity α was needed (see Mancini, 2011; Jacod, 2008). In this paper we theoretically relax this condition and we show that our unbiased estimator achieves excellent numerical results for any couple (α, β). [less ▲]
